Fitment comes from each tire's manufactured size list, and the sizes are the ones drivers reported when they reviewed. Check the size, load index and speed rating on your own doorplate before buying - a size a previous owner ran is not always the size your car left the factory on.

How long do tires last on the Volkswagen Golf?

Across 136 end of life reviews from Volkswagen Golf drivers, a typical set of tires was worn out after 18,000 miles. Half of all worn-out sets lasted between 9,320 miles and 26,718 miles.

Distances are self-reported by drivers whose review marked the set as worn out; figures are medians, so a single unusual report cannot move them.

Every tire reviewed on the Volkswagen Golf

The complete record, including discontinued tires and tires with too few reviews to rank, ordered by the amount of evidence. A further 266 tires have a single review each; they count toward the totals but are not listed.

Kleber Krisalp HP3 205-55-16 Volkswagen Golf 20,000 miles October 29, 2026

Great snow and ice grip, much better than any winter tire i had before.
Good durability as well. Dry grip is fine, wet grip not as much and must be kept in mind. Not very noisy for a winter tire either. Would buy again if they are on discount.

Michelin Primacy 5 205-55-16 Volkswagen Golf 6,000 miles October 29, 2026

The tires are very silent and comfortable. Despite this they are very grippy in the dry and wet and give a good feedback. Driven in 40+ degrees in summer until now in rainy 5 degrees autumn and they make the drive 100% secure.

Pirelli CINTURATO P1 225-40-18 Volkswagen Golf GTI MK7 30,000 miles October 27, 2026

Will not buy again, Michelin are way better in every aspect.

Michelin Pilot Sport 4 S 225-45-17 Volkswagen Golf 6 GT 2,000 miles October 26, 2026

So far I have driven a few kilometers, about 5000 km, the size is 224/45/17", but I am very satisfied with these tires. I had tried the Pilot Sport 4 on a 16" rim, 205/55/16", and the result was magnificent, in dry and wet conditions, always great grip, even wear, and they perform well on the track, without pushing too hard. The Pilot Sport 4S is a clear improvement, especially on the track, with more grip, faster, and they still perform just as well in water. If I don't switch to a semi-slick, I will definitely put this tire back on without hesitation.
I would have liked to try the Yokohama Advan V 107, but for now, it is not available in 17"

Bridgestone Potenza Adrenalin RE005 235-45-17 Volkswagen Golf R 270 BHP 3,000 miles October 21, 2026

Coming from Advan Fleva V701 (Albeit in a 235/35/19 profile) and then Dunlop FM800 (A touring oriented tire, but in the same size) the Bridgestones, while relatively new at least, have boatloads of dry grip and are not skittish in the wet.

These have been used daily as well as some heavy spirited driving, and have held up well. Confidence levels when driving hard are very high with this level of grip and sidewall stiffness.

The sidewall stiffness is really evident, especially compared to touring tires and even lower profile UHP tires, as steering is super direct and precise, and steering feel is much improved and less vague than before.

However, this comes at the trade off of ride quality, as my 17s feel much more like an 18 or 19 inch rim.

Noise levels are also quite high, especially on chip seal roads (as are the majority of country roads in Victoria, Australia) and they roar quite a bit. I imagine this would be very loud in a less insulated car.

There are some concerns with durability, especially outer shoulder feathering, which is supposed to be improved from the previous generations. However, I still have noticed a little excessive wear on the outer shoulder blocks even after 5000km (~3000 miles).

Overall, I paid ~ $800 AUD for a full set, and compared to other tires in this class and budget for my tire size, as well as being available in more sizes than traditional UHP tires, this has been great for someone who prioritizes high steering feel and engagement and doesn't mind the high noise and low overall comfort.

Michelin Pilot Sport 4 S 225-45-18 Volkswagen Golf GTI MK7 10,000 miles October 20, 2026

Very good grip dry and wet. Very good confort and stability at high speed. Handling is soft and not very fun to drive.
Continental extreme contact sport have more sporty handling but confort is less...

Michelin CrossClimate 3 Sport 225-40-18 Volkswagen Golf GTI 7.5 500 miles October 19, 2026

Fitted on my Golf 7.5 GTI Performance as a replacement for a winter tire (Zagreb, Croatia - there hasn't been much snow in a couple of years, only wet conditions).
So far so good - only down side for now is noise. They are louder than most of the tires I have driven on. Speaking as someone who has Bridgestone Potenza Evo Sport summer time.
Feedback on the steering wheel is good, sharp.

Looks good on the car with their sporty side wall.

I will get back on this review after this winter and some snow potential.

Love the handling of these tires. Amazing grip in all weather

Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 6 235-35-19 Volkswagen Golf 7 GTI PP DSG 9,320 miles October 12, 2026

wet grip is the best, Other tires did not feel stable driving on a wet surface on a twisty open road.

Bridgestone Turanza 6 225-40-18 Volkswagen Golf 8, 1.5 TSI 1,000 miles October 2, 2026

The car came in 11.2025 with Turanza T0005 and those were very bad at handling over 80 km/h, the car slided a little sometimes, fuel consumption between 9-12 l/100 km in the city, noise.
With the Turanza 6 the handling is excellent , the noise is very good even on the highway, i only tested it between 130-140 km/h.
Braking is also very good on wet and dry, a little better than T0005, but those were also very good at braking on VW Golf 8.5.
Aquaplaning is also very good.
The fuel consumption now dropped to 4.6 in the city using 100 plus gasoline from Omv.

Where this data comes from

Every rating on this page was submitted by a driver through the review form on this site, naming the car, the tire, the size and the distance covered. Reviews are checked by hand before publication, and the page rebuilds automatically as new ones arrive.

About the TR Score

The Tire Reviews Score rates each tire out of 10 using independent test results and the full body of owner reviews, so you can check a car-specific ranking against the wider evidence.

Who does the testing

Every test published as a Tire Reviews test is run by Jonathan Benson, who has been testing tires independently since 2007.
