Michelin CrossClimate 3 Sport

A genuinely sporty premium all-season that feels close to a summer UHP tire in everyday use, with excellent refinement and very strong braking. It also stands out for low energy consumption, though heavy standing water can expose its limits.

The BEST All Season Tires For 2026/27 P2 of 10

The Michelin CrossClimate 3 Sport finishes second. It had the best wet braking and rolling resistance, strong dry braking and the highest score in subjective dry handling. It was direct, stable and the most summer-like tire at useful road speeds, while still placing near the front in snow braking and traction. It did not convert that feel into class-leading handling times, and once it broke away on loose snow the slide could build abruptly and take longer to recover. It was also the loudest tire measured. This is the CrossClimate for drivers who prioritize steering and dry-road control but still need genuine all-season ability.

I want to put the new Michelin Cross Climate 3 Sport (All Season, non-RFT tires), of course complying with all size, weight and speed indexes, XL tire requirements.

Tire shops and BMW Dealerships are of course recommending against that mentioning potential issues with the xDrive system, transfer case issues, warranty and insurance implications...

I checked and the overall diameter difference between front and rear wheels with the Michelin CC3 Sport tires will be less than 0.5 mm, which is far below BMW xDrive’s safe tolerance of about ±1% circumference (~7 mm at these diameters).

According to those checks, it looks that it is technically safe to put those tires, however, as mentioned, BMW and Tire shops are recommending me to select BMW-approved RFT winter tires for the coming winter.

I can't give any official advice, only that as far as I'm aware, in the UK at least they can't deny warranty work for non-OE tires.

You might also find a winter tire size / specification in the handbook (or online for a region like Germany) which will have alternative sizes.

Yes, the CrossClimate 3 Sport, at least in the size I have tested (225/40 R18) has rim protection, similar to a Pilot Sport 5.

Fitted on my Golf 7.5 GTI Performance as a replacement for a winter tire (Zagreb, Croatia - there hasn't been much snow in a couple of years, only wet conditions).
So far so good - only down side for now is noise. They are louder than most of the tires I have driven on. Speaking as someone who has Bridgestone Potenza Evo Sport summer time.
Feedback on the steering wheel is good, sharp.

Looks good on the car with their sporty side wall.

I will get back on this review after this winter and some snow potential.

These are the first all-season tires I’ve purchased, mainly because I had a contract in Montrose so had a weekly drive between Edinburgh and Montrose. Most of the journey is motorway driving in wet conditions, with a fair amount of B-road driving as well.

I’ve noticed a huge improvement over the Continental SportContact 7s normally fitted to my A45 S, particularly in terms of aquaplaning resistance, wet braking and overall handling. The car feels much more confidence-inspiring during the winter months.

Driving in heavy rain has also been noticeably less stressful. With the SportContact 7s, standing water and very wet motorway conditions would often cause me some concern, whereas with these all-season tires the car feels far more planted and predictable.

For my type of winter driving, the improvement in wet-weather confidence has been significant.

My father bought some 255/35 R20 CrossClimate 3 Sport tires to replace some identical sized CrossClimate 2 tires (which are no longer available in this size). These are to go on his 8.5J alloys. All OEM as per manufacturer specifications. He bought them through BlackCircles and used their recommended local fitter.

These V3 Sport tires are very different from the V2, and very narrow in the contact patch. I measured the width of the contact patch at around 195mm maximum. On an 8.5J rim this means the sidewalls very visibly lean in towards the middle, basically they are "stretched" as per the questionable fashion statement. It also leaves the rim very exposed, with zero protection.

He queried this with BlackCircles, who said to go back to the original fitter to check. He took the wheel off, checked it was 8.5J, basically said every thing was OK as per specifications, fitted correctly, good to go. My father still wasn't happy, BlackCircles said to take the wheel to a different fitter on their books for a second opinion, this guy repeated the exercise and said all was correct.

I raised this with Michelin customer service, asking them the direct question if this tire labelled 255 wide was intended to have a contact patch only around 75% of that width, giving the stretched appearance and no rim protection. On request, I supplied pictures to them. This was their answer:

-------

The Technical Department informed us that Michelin is not aware of any manufacturing defects related to the 255/35 R20 97Y XL TL CROSSCLIMATE 3 SPORT (CAI: 876446). This tire has been engineered to safely fit and seal correctly on rim widths of 8.5J, 9J, 9.5J, and 10J.
All Michelin tires distributed within the European market are manufactured in accordance with the tolerances specified by the European Tire and Rim Technical Organization (ETRTO) and meet all relevant regulatory standards, including UNECE Regulation No. 30, which governs tire construction, performance, and marking. Compliance with these standards is evidenced by the ‘E’ mark approval number displayed on the tire sidewall. For this specific tire, the approval number is E20223414.
In some cases, replacement tires that differ from the vehicle’s original factory-fitted tires may exhibit slight variations in characteristics or appearance. Nonetheless, as long as the tire size, Load Index, and Speed Index conform to the vehicle manufacturer’s specifications, the tire is considered suitable for use on the vehicle.
------

Basically everyone is saying there is nothing wrong with this tire, it conforms to specifications and type approval. On that basis it looks like my father is stuck with them until he wears them out.

It may be a good tire, but I think prospective buyers should be aware what this tire **might** look like on their car. I'm not saying that all CC3S will look this way, it might depend on specific sizes, but this combination of 255/35 R20 on an 8.5J rim looks particularly bad and prone to being scratched up.

Buyers beware. Also note that Michelin think that from their answer above, that this 255/35 tire could be fitted to a 10J alloy. That would look absolutely ridiculous.

You might think that my father ordered the wrong size tire, or the alloy isn't 8.5J, or the wheels are staggered and the rears are wider than the fronts. You'll have to take my word for it that this has all been checked, and double checked, and everything is correct. It's just that the tire looks absolutely ridiculous and doesn't even appear to sit on the rim correctly. But we're assured by 2 tire fitters, BlackCircles and Michelin, that it's all OK.

I run staggered 19" Michelin CC3 Sports on my BMW E63 635d and they're superb tires

Excellent wet & dry grip; even in the recent heatwaves we've had here in Lancashire; their grip hasn't faded in the heat, and then in the recent cooler weather and very wet weather, their grip has been excellent

Smooth, quiet, not 'squishy' like some all-season tires can be and suit the car. They have no issues with the nearly 600NM of torque the car puts through the rear wheels

Would highly recommend them

Drove these for more than 10000km since previous review and still they are great, dry performance is still not peak track performance but grip is more than enough, as long as you keep power in check, again these are not track tires.

Wet grip is also good after all those kms and I dont see any visible cracking or tearing of sipes.

As for snow this year I tried them and they are definitely very good, I even recorded a short clip and put it on Youtube(https://youtu.be/U78naTyV8zE?si=eVGzh6tM4wFk_DKb), you can check yourselves how it handles, of course car has 4WD and I activated sports mode manually to make sure it always is 4WD.

I still think except for its price it is a very good top/mid-performance tire.

Been a user for all cross climate series, except plus, I can say this one tops them all, I could not use it for snowy or heavy wet conditions yet but for dry and wet roads performance its very near to UHP tires. Steering response is good and during hard cornering you can feel sidewalls are not giving way, stable and not losing traction. A very little rubbery feeling when moving over small bumps as if car is floating but actually feels extremely better considering previous potenza s001 stone wheels, also I choose bigger tires 255 35 r19 to 245 40 r19 another reason maybe.
Comfort is also very good especially in urban areas they are virtually silent, medium to high speed there is standart cc noise which is acceptable.
I can say very good ride quality, good dry performance "breaking and traction", not a track tire of course but again if you like switching sport, summer, winter tires, this might not tickle your fancy.
I can say good summer performance

Beautiful tire to drive on, felt smooth, responsive and very comfortable while be capable when required and offering excellent confidence through winter in the low temps and wet roads. Sadly while spirited driving was rare, the have lasted very poorly on my E350d - full alignment carried out before installing them, they lasted 16,437 miles and I have cords showing on both nearside inner edges despite the rest of the tread having up to 4mm, alignment was done in November 25 and July 26, all correct, tires fitted Dec 25, August 26 ruined.

I’ve just come back from a nearly 4000-mile Christmas trip across Europe and tried the CrossClimate 3 Sport for the first time on my Mercedes E-Class S213 Estate (275/35 R19 rear, 245/40 R19 front) and honestly, they blew me away. From heavy rain in France and Belgium to high-speed runs on the German Autobahn, across wet and dry roads, through blizzards and snowstorms in Poland and Austria, including black ice and deep snow the tires handled it all. They adapted instantly to changing road conditions, always providing strong, predictable grip and never feeling anywhere near their limit.
Previously I’d been on Michelin Primacy 3 MOE and then switched to Pilot Sport 4S, which I really like even on a heavy, not-particularly sporty estate car, so I expected some compromise - but no, not at all. The CC3 Sport seem to handle anything without compromise; a genuinely impressive product. Through faster bends they held on nicely and felt really controlled. Honestly, it felt more like driving on a premium summer UHP tire than an all-season. Wet and dry braking were great, and high-speed stability was spot on. In the snow they stayed safe and predictable, even in deeper snow and icy patches. They were also surprisingly quiet, with no noticeable difference compared to the previous sets. The only thing I’m not completely sure about yet is how they’ll wear over the summer, I should have a better idea by the end of the year.

Really, the Michelin CrossClimate 3 Sport are simply outstanding and you won’t find better-looking sidewalls too :)
And just to be clear, I’m not being paid by Michelin or anyone else for this, it’s simply my honest opinion.
