How tire categories work

A tire category is the set of tires designed for the same job: the same vehicle, the same season and the same balance of performance against comfort, wear and price. Rankings only mean something inside a category - a track tire and a touring tire are both excellent at different things, so comparing them head to head tells you nothing.

The performance ladder

Performance categories are a ladder: Trackday and Competition tires trade everything for grip, Extreme and Max Performance follow, Ultra High and High Performance balance grip with daily use, and Premium Touring and Touring prioritize comfort, wear and efficiency. Further up the ladder means more dry grip and less of everything else.

The seasons

Summer tires use compounds that work best in warm conditions, giving the strongest wet and dry grip of any season category when temperatures are mild or hot. Their performance falls away in the cold, which is where winter and all season tires take over.

All Season tires compromise between summer and winter ability so one set can stay on the car all year. In moderate climates a good all season tire is a genuinely strong choice; in hard winters or hot summers a dedicated tire still does the job better.

All Weather tires are all season tires with a winter bias: year-round tires that carry the 3PMSF severe snow marking and hold up in a proper winter, at some cost in warm weather sharpness.

Winter tires use soft, high-silica compounds and heavy siping that keep working below roughly 7C, on snow and on ice. The category spans three different products - Central European, Nordic friction and studded tires - built for different winters.

Where this data comes from

Rankings combine independent test results with owner reviews submitted through this site, each naming the car, the tire, the size and the distance covered. Reviews are checked by hand before publication, and the page rebuilds automatically as new evidence arrives.

About the TR Score

The Tire Reviews Score rates each tire out of 10 using independent test results and the full body of owner reviews, weighted by how much evidence backs them.

Who does the testing

Every test published as a Tire Reviews test is run by Jonathan Benson, who has been testing tires independently since 2007.
