Studded and Nordic tires are built for ice and packed snow, and give up some wet and dry grip for it. Alpine tires suit wet roads, slush and snow. Check local rules before fitting studs.

How this guide chooses tires

First, eligibility: tires must be active, published and listed in your exact dimensions, selected season, vehicle type and driving category, and for winter tires the winter type you choose. Track days means trackday, competition and extreme performance (200 treadwear) tires only. Run-flat and brand-tier requirements are respected. A brand tier is not a live price budget. An EV preference does not certify vehicle compatibility.

Tire classes are kept apart. On the TireReviews Score, studded, Nordic, Alpine and track tires are each ranked among their own kind, so a studded tire scoring 89 for ice and an Alpine tire scoring 89 do not have the same grip. Choose a winter type, or Track days, to compare like with like: studded and Nordic tires are then judged on ice and snow first, and track tires on dry grip, with the class weights the TireReviews Score uses. When a shortlist still mixes classes, every category is ranked instead on the score’s underlying cross-test estimate, among all tires of those classes, so the numbers can differ from the tire pages. Your winter answers count too: regular snow adds weight to snow, frequent ice adds weight to ice, and a winter tire kept on all year adds weight to longevity and dry grip.

Then, your priorities: each dimension uses one source - a TireReviews category score where suitable, otherwise identified test metrics, otherwise owner ratings with at least ten reviews. We do not add an overall score on top of the same category evidence. Longevity uses wear evidence; efficiency uses rolling-resistance tests, never wear or buy-again ratings. Ride comfort uses subjective comfort tests, not tire weight or external noise. Perceived noise uses subjective noise tests separately.

Owner reviews and tester write-ups are tagged against a fixed list of aspects (wet grip, road noise, tread life, tramlining and so on). The chips on each card count how many owners raised an aspect out of those whose reviews have been tagged, and tap through to those reviews. When you ask us to avoid something, tires where a meaningful share of owners report it lose up to fifteen match points per concern, capped at twenty-five; nothing is added for silence. Tester notes are shown for context and do not move the ranking. Where a dimension has no test or owner-rating data, the tagged owner comments stand in once at least ten owners have raised it.

Evidence comes separately: unknown dimensions remain unknown. Match is a weighted average of known dimensions, with their weights rescaled to 100%. The first evidence group requires at least 65% coverage, 35% test coverage, data for the core dimension (wet, or dry for track tires and ice for studded and Nordic tires), two matching tests, a test within three years and no successor in your size that fits your brief with current evidence of its own. It ranks before partial, older or earlier-generation evidence (at least 45% coverage and core-dimension data), then limited evidence. An earlier model remains available to explore, but is not given the same current-evidence status while a successor with current evidence is available in your size. These are transparent guide rules, not statistical confidence intervals. Source scales and test conditions differ; use the linked tests to investigate close choices.

The leading evidence group also requires data for your main goal. Up to three choices are shown: the leading match, then meaningful alternatives where available. Alternatives stay in the same evidence group, within ten match points, with comparable core-dimension data (wet for road tires) no more than fifteen points below the leader. A highlighted alternative needs a gain of at least three points on the same source scale. These are shortlist rules, not safety thresholds; the remaining ranked matches can be expanded.

Labels remain separate: wet-grip and rolling-resistance grades cover specific regulated measurements. External rolling noise is not cabin noise or ride comfort. Snow and ice certification are not invented performance scores. Label ranges can span different load/speed specifications in the same dimensions.

Before buying: confirm the manufacturer’s size, load and speed requirements, front/rear dimensions, approvals and any run-flat requirements. Catalogue availability is not current retail stock. A successor or a high score alone does not establish suitability. Saved choices stay in your browser; sharing the brief shares only the public selection settings.
