Passenger Car Summer Ultra High Performance Tires Tire Review Highlights

Sumitomo HTR Z5 rated 79% while driving a Honda Civic Type R
Driving on mostly motorways for 2000 spirited miles
Having just completed a trip across Europe to the Nurburgring, then completed laps, these tires held up extremely well. Although not designed for track use, the grip levels remained high and the wear is virtually nil. Am very impressed for the price point! If on a budget, then would recommend! 8/10.

Nexen N Fera SU1 rated 37% while driving a Mazda MX5
Driving on for 0 average miles
Would NOT recommend at all . Have these tires on my Mazda MX5 . They are showing signs of spitting on the shoulders on all 4 tires. Tread is still around 6mm.
So will need replacing despite having plenty of tread left on them.
Contacted Nexen direct by email & received a very swift response very impressed
This was not long lived as have tried several times to contact Nexen & got no response at all via email
Manged to get contact number of person who had email me.
When I called I did get the run around from them. Not possible to put my call through from reception , really.
Left several messages on mobile number that I got. They did not have the courtesy to return my calls or emails.

Dunlop SP Sport LM 705 rated 73% while driving a Toyota Camry
Driving on a combination of roads for 40000 spirited miles
Have the lm705s on a 2021 camry le 215 55 17 iirc. Compared to stock Bridgestone ecopia's very similar. The ecopias cost $180, The lm705s for $78. These were the only name brands in this price range other then sumitomos and that are made in japan. Dunlops are made by sumitomo tho so. The lm705s say sumitomo rubber ltd on them. The lettering on the dunlops lm704s are the same as the sumitomo tires which, imo look cheap. The stock bridgestones lettering looked nicer. Overall tires perform well with the camry in Dry and even wet. Read the reviews on wet being lack luster which was a concern in south florida but seemed to perform well. For the price, it's what you can expect for these sumitomos, I mean dunlops.

Dunlop Sport BluResponse rated 60% while driving a Ford Mondeo
Driving on mostly town for 12000 average miles
Disappointed with Longevity – Dunlop Sport BluResponse 215/55 R16 (2021)
I purchased a full set of Dunlop Sport BluResponse 215/55 R16 97W XL tires in 2021, Lithuania, expecting a solid performance from a premium brand. Over the last three years, I’ve driven under 20,000 km, and during the off-season, they were stored indoors in a cool, dry basement — no exposure to sunlight, moisture, or harsh conditions. Tire pressure was checked regularly, and there were no signs of underinflation or abuse. The tires were always mounted on rims and were never removed during seasonal changes, so no additional stress from mounting or dismounting was involved.
Dry grip: Performance was quite decent when new. The tires felt confident on dry roads, offering a stable, quiet ride at both city and highway speeds.
Wet grip: Initially good, with predictable braking.
Comfort: These tires were noticeably quieter and smoother than the mid-range tires.
Wear Rate: This is where my experience takes a downturn. Despite the low mileage and proper storage, the tires have developed visible cracks . This was discovered in early April, 2025 when switching from winter to summer tires. Given the light use and good storage conditions, I did not expect this level of degradation from a supposedly high-quality tire.
Safety Concern: The cracking is particularly concerning — not something you’d expect from a tire with such limited use. Even if the warranty has expired, this feels like a premature failure. It casts serious doubt on the long-term durability of this model.

Verdict:
I can’t recommend the Dunlop Sport BluResponse based on my experience. One pair has already significantly degraded, and the other is showing early signs of the same issue. While driving performance was acceptable in the short term, this kind of unexpected deterioration is unacceptable for a tire at this price point and from a brand with Dunlop’s reputation. I’ve lost trust in this model and will be switching to a different brand for my next set.

Davanti Protoura Sport rated 89% while driving a Mercedes Benz c43
Driving on mostly country roads for 4500 average miles
Fitted to my Mercedes coupe, very impressed with them so far. Had them put on at the end of winter and they’ve been very grippy despite the cold weather and frost. Seem to be wearing really well and they seem a lot quieter than the original tires which were fitted - Continental which only lasted 9,000 miles from new.

Dunlop Sport BluResponse rated 63% while driving a Volkswagen Golf 6 2.0 TDI 110hp
Driving on mostly country roads for 15000 spirited miles
Mind that my car is now 16 y/o, but overall I didn’t love these tires. They have plenty of grip in the dry, but are quite average in the wet. They feel loose around the dead zone, and at turn-in they seem to flex a lot, requiring a lot of steering angle at first. After a while they start to grip better, but it’s still tricky to keep a consistent line, with little feedback from the road.
They’re fitted to 6.5'' wide wheels, which makes them bulge slightly, probably adding to this weird feeling.

Kumho Ecsta PS71 rated 67% while driving a Ford Mustang
Driving on mostly motorways for 12000 spirited miles
Dry:
If you're driving in hot climates (from 20C up) they're quite good (8/10) because handling, braking and stiffness feel just right. They are super noisy for a summer tire, above 90kmh they feel on par with Vredestein Quatrac Pro which are all season tires! The grip is not comparable to Michelin Pilot Sport 4S but that's to be expected.

Wet:
Rain behavior is interesting because they do slip (cars tamer than my Mustang probably wont make them slip at all) but they slip predictably and progressively without snapping, the central grooves are wider than usual so aquaplaning doesn't happen easily. They're okay in my opinion, grip is limited but they warn you soon enough.

Cold:
Kumho PS71 are terrible in the cold (below 10C) they are super stiff and they snap easily even in the dry (cool if you want to do some drifting but dangerous) and they're terrifying in wet conditions, I went on a 18% steep downhill at around 3C temperature on a relatively dry road (it rained the night before but most of the road was dry with some wet patches) and the wheels locked up with minimal and gentle brake input so I had to engine brake at 4k rpm to not slide, this would never happen with Continental SportContact or Bridgestone Potenza high-end summer tire. I never tested these tires below freezing or during winter luckily.

Durability:
No rim protection which on big wheels and low profile should be standard, wear is disappointing considering how stiff the tire is, probably the hard compound tears down more than softer rubber. Rear axle went flush with the wear bars before 18tkm and the front before 25tkm of course the Mustang will eat through the rear tires like butter considering how heavy and powerful it is but a Pilot Sport 4S will last almost 30tkm and provide significantly more grip throughout the entire lifespan...

Conclusion:
Good budget tire for hot climates, to be avoided at all cost in cold environment. I would not buy this tire again unless I get a super good deal (max 110€ per tire compared to Continental which are 160€)

Michelin Pilot Sport 4 Zero Pressure rated 79% while driving a BMW 130i M
Driving on a combination of roads for 10000 spirited miles
This is actually a review for Michelin Pilot Sport 4 Zero Pressure. They don't come up as an option anywhere that I can find on this site, so Super Sports are probably the nearest equivalent.

Also, my car has staggered sizes, so this is also a review for the fronts which are 205/50 17. BTW, my car is a Japanese import, hence the 17" size (standard 130i M Sport issue. It was bling obsessive UK market that had 18s as standard on 130i).

Having owned a UK 130i some years ago, and ditching the runflats on those only to regret it, I decided to do it differently this time and retain the use of runflats. Why? Because, when I ditched them last time, it introduced additional body movement that's not supposed to be there, In other words, BMW tuned the suspension to work with runflats. (They actually designed the 130i M Sport to handle as intended with 17" runflats, not the 18s that UK cars have as standard). So, if you ditch the runflats, the car will have less body control than intended. Is running the 130i on runflats ideal? No. Nobody really 'likes' the feel of runflats. They're just not as good. But as I found out last time, the alternative, for me, was a car that moves around too much, and that was even more undesirable. So, I'm living with it.

What are the tires like? The Pilot Sport 4 ZP is a third generation runflat, and a premium sports one at that. All first generation runflats were awful. Then the second generation was brought out some time ago, and that was a bit of an improvement but not by much (I experienced some on my old 130i before ditching them). Then, more recently the third generation runflat was introduced. From what I can tell from reviews, this third generation, across the board by all premium manufacturers, was a bigger step forward and has improved much more this time. Enough to match a 'normal' tire? No, not even close. But they're not as totally evil as they used to be. The feel is quite a bit different and you have to get used to that. But, once you do, they're actually alright. They don't have as much grip as a 'normal' tire of equivalent size, and what strange feel they do have comes to you a little more slowly through the seat of the pants, via the chassis, rather than more immediately through the steering. You just have to get used to this and learn to read the signals. Wet weather braking is just as good as any 'normal' premium tires I've ever had on any of my other vehicles.

I bought these because they were best in reviews I could find that fits both my front and rear sizes. I will therefore probably buy them again.

Kumho Ecsta PS71 rated 59% while driving a Mazda MX5

I have another review closer to the beginning of life for these tires, this is a near end of life update

got the MX5 aligned recently, and although it drove well before (its hard to find a poor handling mx5) the toe out on the front destroyed the tires faster than they otherwise would have worn.

however with the new alignment (F: 0 toe; -1.5 camber; 4.5 caster R: -1.3 camber; -0.50mm toe) both the car and tires feel alot better.

I also have done a track day with them, they felt great for about 1 1/2 laps of a ~1 minute track but become really greasy afterward as they overheat somewhat quick. this said that is not a criticism of the tire as it is not designed for track work.

Dry grip on the Twisties / Touge is very good and unless you are really pushing it (to the dismay of local law enforcement) these have more than adequate grip for fun spirited driving. However you can get them loose if you try and of course will not have the pace of dedicated semislicks.

wet grip is very good, you can get them loose with some ease if you try, however to do so would not be 'driving to conditions'. for their class in an Australian climate their wet grip is great (probably not PS4S great, but not so bad it's dangerous.)

only thing I'd say is wear is not that great, granted i did have a poor alignment that accelerated wear, but i would eyeball the wear as below average for it's class. not horrible, not great either. the PS71's on my MX5 have lasted 15,000 km of driving on a harsh alignment (toe out on front) 60-70% of that driving was at 7-9 tenths on twisty roads, so abnormally hard compared to most.

I wouldn't recommend this tire to those who drive Touge / Track at pace often in summer or in a climate where you can run summer tires year round (like australia) . go for a semi slick in that case if you can stomach the poor wet performance. or a PS4/PS4s/PS5/PSs5 if it is in your size (PS4/PS5 also overheat on track so keep that in mind) a PS71 is simply not made for a Track/ heavy Touge use case.

if you need wet weather grip and take your car for a 6-8 tenths run every now and then but need a good daily tire, these tires will be great value for money.

a PSA:
get an alignment. Don't care if you've had the car for a month and the previous owner said they got one recently, get an alignment as any handling or wear issues cannot be blamed on the tire unless you personally have taken your car to get an alignment yourself. a fresh alignment, especially custom performance specs (do your research!) can have a monumental impact on how the car feels regardless of tire choice.

Kumho Ecsta PS71 rated 90% while driving a Jaguar XF
Driving on a combination of roads for 1000 average miles
Fitted to 2014 Jaguar XF, replacing Goodyear Eagle Asymmetric 6s, and the difference is not that noticeable. Plenty of grip in the wet and dry, and good handling, although I drive fairly conservatively. Perfect for day to day use, and quite a bit cheaper than premium brands. Only unknown is wear as I’ve only had them for a month, but then the Goodyears tended to wear out fairly rapidly anyway.
