What is a Rugged Terrain tire?

Rugged Terrain tires, often marked R/T, sit between an all-terrain and a mud-terrain: mud-terrain style shoulder blocks and sidewall lugs for rocks and deep ruts, with a tighter center tread that keeps them usable on the road. They are noisier and wear faster than an all-terrain.

All Season tires compromise between summer and winter ability so one set can stay on the car all year. In moderate climates a good all season tire is a genuinely strong choice; in hard winters or hot summers a dedicated tire still does the job better.

Professional tests of SUV and 4x4 All Season Rugged Terrain Tires

Every published comparison test of this category we have indexed - 6 in total, newest first. Test results feed directly into the TR Scores above.

Winners are only named where a test crowned a single overall winner. Tests that rank tires within groups, or test too small a field to compare brands, still count as evidence but name no winner here.

The EXP's have been both fantastic and not so great. These tires have surprisingly good snow traction. I made over the crest of several mountain passes during white-out to near white out conditions. While others struggled for traction these EXP's kept on going. However, they started out smooth and well balanced feeling at the steering wheel. After about 10k miles I developed a slight steering wheels shimmy that has remained. While the tires have been good in terms of performance in mixed conditions, the steering wheel shimmy at highway speeds means I'll be looking for something else. It's a rather good tire; I just wish they would have stayed smooth like when new. With the tread wore down a bit, I do get a bit of lug slap now from the outer tread blocks; that may be the cause of my vibration.

Have had KO2, Toyo AT3, Yokohama MT tires for comparison.
We drive mostly highway, tow a 6k trailer, weekends are off pavement.
Initial impressions-
Expect fuel economy loss. These are heavy tires for an AT. We had these on a 2” lifted 22’ 4Runner- just awful fuel economy. Now have these on a 26’ Diesel half ton. The new truck also took a hit in fuel economy.
Great on road, incredible off-road, great on gravel, stable towing tire. Best tire I’ve been on yet and will definitely buy them again.

These get very loud and lose some snow traction as they age, as the siping is not full depth. They also wear weird despite rotating every 5k. I've had better luck in other sizes and lighter vehicles with less power.

I wanted a good looking 4WD tire that worked well both on and off road. The Radar Renegade RT+ is in the sweet spot! I’ve had them for a few years and most likely will for a couple more years. I’ve been towing and living in a caravan for the past year, no problems at all. Highly recommend checking out and getting a set, love that dagger side wall. Saved $ too which is a bonus.

2000 Silverado 1500 trailboss OEM Duratracs. Bought the truck brand new and I wouldn't buy these tires again because at about 10-15k in they started with a nasty vibration (worse than any mud tire I've ever driven), especially between 50-60mph, and generally noisy like a mud tire at most other speeds. The inside of the tires are obviously and severely cupped, probably the issue. What I don't know is whether this is my truck's fault or the tires. I rotated on schedule, but only balanced twice, and never had an alignment done - it's possible that may be the cause.

Other than noise, in 60k miles I still have enough tread to where I could go 70k. I drive off-road in snow a couple times per year and they perform very well. Wet traction has always been pretty terrible. Never had a puncture, and that's with a decent amount of sidewall abuse; even for C rated tires I think they are relatively tough.

Just putting on my 3rd set.. love them! I am driving in my personal pickup truck traveling the USA fulltime and they’ve been in rain, hail, sleet, ice, mud, red clay, deserts, mountains, coastal turns.. you name it I’ve thrown it to these tires. I’ve had glass, nails, metal (out in TC oil rigging area) and dresser thorns all come at me in terrains and interstates and sometimes you can’t avoid and the Kevlar lives up to its name within these tires. The year before these came out I bought Goodyear tire similar to these but Kevlar wasn’t incorporated into the tire so it was a no brainer when these came out I ran purchase to get to try them..
I’ve reveled 150,000 miles in a little over a year and a half and this girl will tell you guys this is your tires just don’t buy out my size.. lol. I’m still going strong with this tire and the only thing I can say is red clay mud coming off the mesas and any tire will do this, they don’t have much grip on the red clay mud and if way below 0 degrees they’ll handle good on ice but likenanayntirenifnyiunhitnthenwrong patch be ready to straighten your ride up in the side..
I would recommend these without hesitating and I’m going continue with em’. Oh another thing is when you rub a curb or jump one they’ve handled liked great. No tears along the sides from curb rubs and sometimes this happens.
Happy journeys out there and maybe Goodyear would like to sponsor me a set to test ride to full crazy female capacity throughout the wildlands of the USA.
One more thing these say 80,000 mile tire umm more like 55,000 mile and as you know you’ll know for the tire will get louder..
The road noise very little but as wearing you’ll know new ones needed. Performance in cornering off exits, turns .. you’ll think you’re in a sports car even with a heavy load in your bed.
I can’t say enough about them because on road and off-road performance just excellent. Get a set you WON’T be disappointed..

A bit louder than similar aggressive AT tires on my other Jeeps such as KO2’s or AT3W’s.

Better in mud than either, also impressive in the rocks. Closest to MT performance in mud and rocks, while still being great on pavement, ice and winter conditions.

My 3rd year running them all season and been extremely happy with traction and wear!! We get some nasty winters and zero issues with snow. Ice is the biggest weakness so far.
