Michelin Primacy 5

The Michelin Primacy 5 is a premium summer touring tire focused on refinement, efficiency and long life rather than outright sportiness. It stands out for its very low road noise and supple ride comfort, with many drivers noting a calm motorway character. In mixed conditions it generally feels safe and predictable, with good straight-line wet security and reassuring aquaplaning resistance. The main compromise is a more muted steering feel and less confidence when pushing hard, especially in wet corners.

Scoring Process
  1. Collect Test Data: Gather results from professional tire tests across multiple publications. Minimum 1 test(s) required.
  2. Normalize Positions: Convert test positions to percentile scores using exponential weighting (factor: 1.2).
  3. Apply Recency Weighting: More recent tests are weighted higher with a decay rate of 0.95.
  4. Incorporate User Reviews: Factor in user review data (minimum 5 reviews). Weight: 15%.
  5. Bayesian Smoothing: Apply Bayesian prior (score: 7, weight: 1.5) to prevent extreme scores with limited data.
  6. Calculate Final Score: Combine all components using normalization factor of 1.1. Max score with limited data: 9.5.

Latest Tire Test Results
A quiet, comfortable, efficient road tire with a stable, safe balance in both wet and dry driving.
Grip-based results were mostly mid-pack, so it isn't a front-runner for braking or handling pace.
The Michelin Primacy 5 finished 6th overall and earned a Recommended award. It was one of the more road-leaning tires in the test, combining 2nd best rolling resistance with good comfort results, including a strong subjective comfort score and a good measured noise reading. In wet aquaplaning it did well in the straight-line test, but objective wet grip was more mid-pack and the wet circle result was towards the back. Dry performance followed a similar pattern: safe and usable, but not a leader for braking or handling.

7th/16
The Primacy 5 also misses a good safety rating. The summary describes imprecise steering and thermal sensitivity on dry and wet roads, although braking on both surfaces is good. Its environmental rating is the best in the test: the tire offers very high predicted mileage, the lowest abrasion and low weight, and it achieves the lowest fuel consumption among all candidates. Consequently, ADAC gives only a conditional recommendation, noting good braking and excellent efficiency but shortcomings in overall handling.
6th/10
Michelin Primacy 5 delivers one of the most pleasant driving experiences in the test. Steering feel is refined with good straight-line stability, qualities that are appreciated in daily use. When pushed hard, it communicates grip levels clearly and stays easy to drive beyond the limit. Ride comfort is good over joints and bumps, though noise increases noticeably on coarse asphalt. Rolling resistance is among the lowest. The downside is that braking distances are only average on both wet and dry surfaces, and wet curve grip falls below the group mean.

Review Summary

Based on 29 user reviews

Across 29 reviews, the Michelin Primacy 5 is most often described as a premium touring tire with standout ride comfort and low cabin noise (especially at highway speeds), alongside strong wet-road security and aquaplaning resistance. Many drivers also report smoothness, low rolling resistance with improved or stable fuel economy, and encouraging early wear results. A recurring minority theme is that it isn't a sporty tire-road feel and fast-corner precision can feel muted or less confidence-inspiring versus performance-focused options.

Strengths
  • Excellent ride comfort and bump absorption
  • Very low noise levels (notably quiet on highways)
  • Strong wet grip
  • Wet braking confidence and aquaplaning resistance
  • Low rolling resistance / improved or stable fuel economy
  • Good all-round dry grip for a touring tire
  • Promising durability and slow wear in early mileage reports
Areas for Improvement
  • Not a sporty tire: less sharp steering feel/feedback and reduced confidence in aggressive cornering

Given 100% while driving a Audi A3 Sportback (225/40 R18) on a combination of roads for 0 easy going miles
Just got the new Primacy 5s installed. Big upgrade from the stock Nexen N’Fera Sport tires on my Audi A3! Much more comfortable, quieter and just overall more premium-feeling.

Given 97% while driving a Volvo v70 D5 (205/55 R16) on a combination of roads for 2,000 easy going miles
Absolutely fantastic tires with extremely low rolling resistance yet still excellent grip. It practically powers our Volvo V70 through fast corners, and on the highway, it reduces fuel consumption by about 0.5 liters per 100km compared to the previously fitted Premacy 4 tires, which were showing their age (10+ years old).

Given 93% while driving a Subaru Outback 3.0L (225/60 R17) on mostly town for 0 average miles
Recently changed from primacy 3 to 5s. I was always satisfied with the 3s but the 5s really are a step up. The ride feel and roll resistance are excellent. My fuel consumption has definitely improved. I can't comment on it's wet weather performance yet (it's currently a bit dry in Australia) but it feels sure footed in the dry. It definitely feels like a premium tire

Given 60% while driving a Honda Accord EX L V6 (225/45 R17) on for 400 miles
I’ve had primacy 4 on my Honda previous to the primacy 5. I can confirm these tires are not as good as the other tires as these have road noise.
I’ve had them on for about 400 klms and will be returning to the tire shop to have them returned. Other than the tire noise they are ok in other areas.
Hope this helps others looking for comparisons.

Given 68% while driving a Lynk & Co lynk&co 06 (225/45 R19) on for 2,200 miles
On my Lynk & Co 06, I replaced the Giti P10 tires on the front axle after nearly 30,000 kilometers due to deteriorating comfort and increased noise. I switched to the latest Michelin Primacy 5, hoping to maintain a comfortable driving experience. The Primacy 5 costs twice as much as the Giti P10. However, to my great disappointment, the Primacy 5 does not offer a better noise experience than the new Giti P10. Even worse, during the first 2,000 kilometers, the Primacy 5 always had vibrations that affected the steering wheel feel, which was bother me every day . After 2,000 kilometers, this issue lessened but did not disappear completely. The dry grip and cornering performance give me absolutely no confidence; this is a world of difference compared to the Giti P10. Moreover, the body roll has increased, significantly affecting my driving confidence. For this expensive price, it did not bring a better comfort or driving experience. I think this is a failed replacement experience. I am already looking for a more balanced tire, hoping to replace the Primacy 5 as soon as possible

Very comfortable tire, quiet, good wet grip, good wet braking. The standout really is the ride comfort.

Given 100% while driving a Ford Focus MK3.5 1.6 TI VCT (205/55 R16) on for 100 miles
My car is a Focus. I replaced the tires with Michelin Primacy 5. I'm not mentioning the brand of the tires I removed to avoid disrespecting other brands. My car feels like it had a reverse chain that broke. The car is so much smoother, it glides on the road, it's so quiet and soft, even the steering feels lighter. I'm very happy with it. Anyone thinking about buying tires can buy them without hesitation.

Initial Impressions Review
Given 76% while driving a Tesla 2024 Model 3 RWD (235/45 R18) on for 10,000 miles
The Michelin Primacy 5 is an exceptionally comfortable and quiet daily tire that excels at soaking up bumps while maintaining impressively low noise levels over time. It offers great efficiency through low rolling resistance and proves highly durable, showing only ~1mm of wear at its current mileage. While it is a safe and reliable choice for the commute, the highly isolated road feel—while excellent for cabin refinement—means it lacks the confidence and precision required for fast cornering or dynamic lane changes.

Initial impressions are very good, a bit noisy rolling but absorbing bumps very good. Grip is superb, both wet and dry.

Given 91% while driving a Toyota Corolla (205/55 R16) on a combination of roads for 4,000 average miles
Dry Grip:
Very good to excellent, even when driving spiritedly on twisty roads.

Wet Grip:
Very good straight-line aquaplaning resistance. On twisty roads at average to spirited speeds, they make that “I’m losing grip” noise, but they actually don’t slip at all. Still, the sound makes me feel a bit insecure, so I tend to lower the speed.

Noise:
Compared to the OEM Falken SN832B they replaced, they are one level noisier in town, but it’s a premium, low-pitch noise that you get used to over time. However, they really impressed me with how quiet they are on the highway! I think these tires are primarily made for cruising. I don’t think there is a quieter tire above 120 km/h on the market — the only thing you hear is aerodynamic noise.
Keep in mind my car is a latest-generation full hybrid, so it’s very quiet and even minor tire noise is noticeable.

Comfort:
My previous tires were soft. The Primacy 5 are a bit firmer, BUT the way they absorb imperfections and the overall driving feel at the end of the day is actually more comfortable and pleasant than before. I don’t know how the engineers managed it, but they succeeded — I think they really shine in this segment and might be the most comfortable tire on the market.

Wear:
They’re made to last 50,000+ km, so after just 5,000 km they show almost no wear. That said, be patient and give them 2,000–3,000 km to show their virtues. I keep the manufacturer’s recommended pressures, which seem to work perfectly for the car and for my preference as well: 2.5 bar front, 2.4 bar rear.

Given 94% while driving a Volkswagen Passat B8 Variant 1.4 GTE 160kw (235/45 R18) on a combination of roads for 11,000 average miles
These are easily the best summer wheels I've driven in my whole life. Much better than the previous Continental Premium Contact 6 which started to hum loudly at speeds faster than 60 km/h. Can't really understand some of the negative reviews for the same size and vehicle model.
Very easy driving, low noise and good rolling resistance. Stable on wet conditions, and haven't experienced any skidding. Durability have to be accessed later but so far no problems.
I've driven so far 11,000 miles on nordic roads of variable conditions consisting of smaller communal roads, highways, towns etc. Road feedback seems nearly perfect to me.

I changed my tire from high profile tire. So I can't really comment on the comfort and noise. Buy believe me, this tire really sticks well on road. Especially on wet condition. My suv drives like a sedan sports car! Very happy with my purchase.

Given 87% while driving a Mazda 3 SkyactiV (215/45 R18) on a combination of roads for 4,500 average miles
Mazda 3 4th Gen. The tires are skinnier than ones replaced with the same marked width. They heat up a lot so tire pressure builds up. Cornering in the dry on a 90 deg bend onto 2 lanes will buckle the tire doing over 40km/h. Driven in temperatures between -4 & +36 degrees. They are very good in wet conditions with stable steering. Lovely ride on most roads except course stone chips. They take small pot holes & road expansion joints better than any tire I have used. A great tire if you are not into sporty cornering. A relaxing drive is what I found these tires to provide along with a quieter drive. Tread loss is approx .5mm over 4500 kms. Original depth was 7.5 mm. They should last a while with wheel rotation. I paid for a premium European tire that is made in China. Go figure.
