Tire Rack has published its latest group test, titled "Premium Touring Tires to Elevating the Journey". The 2024 report evaluates a large group of eleven popular touring tires using a 2025 Toyota Camry as the test vehicle. The test focuses primarily on the Grand Touring All-Season and All-Weather categories, with nine patterns tested. To provide a broader market comparison, two representative Standard Touring All-Season tires were also included in the evaluation.

From an engineering perspective, this test is particularly interesting due to its direct comparison of multiple tire sub-categories. It places traditional all-season tires alongside several "All-Weather" patterns that carry the Three-Peak Mountain Snowflake (3PMSF) symbol, allowing for a direct evaluation of the design trade-offs between tires engineered for balanced year-round use and those with an enhanced focus on snow capability. The results highlighted significant variations in performance philosophy. Some tires, like the Bridgestone WeatherPeak, demonstrated strong winter grip at the expense of wet and dry performance, whereas others like the Michelin Primacy Tour A/S excelled in the wet but struggled in the snow. This contrasts with patterns like the Goodyear Assurance WeatherReady2, which delivered more consistent, well-balanced results across the full spectrum of tests.
It is important to note that Tire Rack's final overall ranking is determined purely by the subjective scores awarded by their test drivers for factors like road comfort and track handling. This ranking does not directly factor in the objective data, such as braking distances or lap times. Readers can, however, re-sort the full results by any data metric on the 'results table' page, linked above, to form their own conclusions based on their performance priorities. To see the detailed data and analysis, you can read the full test on the Tire Rack website via the link above.

The Goodyear Assurance WeatherReady2 is a standout performer, offering a plush and controlled ride on the road paired with almost sporty steering response. While there is some noticeable tread noise, its on-track performance is excellent. In both wet and dry conditions, it feels incredibly solid, planted, and confident, with strong grip and deliberate, consistent handling that easily manages emergency maneuvers. This reliability extends to winter, where it provides authoritative and secure performance in snow and on ice, making it a top-tier contender.

The Vredestein Quatrac Pro+ is an excellent all-weather option that provides a pleasant and quiet daily drive with natural, lively steering. It feels agile and authoritative on the wet track, with performance on par with the test's best. In winter, it is absolutely in its element, delivering confident and controlled performance in the snow with forgiving handling. Its only notable quirk was a sensitivity to speed during dry emergency lane change maneuvers, which it struggled with just over the target speed.

The Toyo Celsius Sport lives up to its name, providing a sporty and engaging driving experience. While its on-road ride is firm and transmits more noise and impacts than its peers, it compensates with exceptionally quick and responsive steering. On the track, it's a top performer in both wet and dry conditions, delivering agile handling, great communication, and the fastest wet lap times. Its snow performance is also commendable and manageable, but it has a significant weakness in its very poor ice braking.

The Michelin Primacy Tour A/S is an excellent tire for three-season driving, offering a firm but composed ride and light, accurate steering. It truly excels in wet conditions, posting the shortest braking distances and feeling agile and responsive. This athletic character continues in the dry, with crisp steering, though the grip can fall off a bit abruptly at the limit. Its main drawback is its winter performance, where it struggles significantly in the snow compared to the competition.

The Pirelli Cinturato WeatherActive provides a refined and comfortable daily driving experience, with one of the quietest and most composed rides in the test, complemented by natural and responsive steering. Its wet performance is solid, particularly its braking, though lateral grip could be improved. In the dry, it feels less predictable at the limit, making emergency maneuvers a challenge. It redeems itself in winter with confident straight-line snow traction and the best ice braking in the test, though cornering grip isn't as impressive.

The Michelin CrossClimate2 lives up to its reputation as a benchmark, delivering a composed and comfortable road ride with light, eager steering. On the track, its straight-line traction is impressive in the wet, though it can push a little when cornering hard in both wet and dry conditions. Where it truly shines is in winter conditions, where it stands head and shoulders above the competition in this test, offering athletic and confidence-inspiring performance in the snow and on ice.

The Bridgestone Turanza QuietTrack is a comfortable daily driver with smooth, responsive steering. However, on the track, it shows its limits with a general lack of grip in wet and dry conditions, being particularly unsettled when combining braking and steering. The Pirelli P7 AS Plus 3 offers a wonderfully comfortable and quiet road ride with responsive, if slightly light, steering. This excellent on-road composure makes it a pleasure for daily driving in dry conditions, where its handling is a highlight. However, its performance suffers significantly when conditions become slick; it lacks the necessary traction in both wet and wintry environments compared to its rivals, feeling much less secure despite its good steering feel.

The Michelin Defender2 serves as a good reference point for the Standard Touring category, providing a decent ride that absorbs small bumps well, though with some excess body motion. The steering is precise but can feel sluggish at low speeds. On the track, its performance is limited by a lack of ultimate grip in both wet and dry conditions, leading to frequent and significant understeer, making emergency maneuvers a handful. In winter conditions, it struggled significantly compared to the group, with the longest braking distances and difficulty applying power.

The Bridgestone WeatherPeak is a tale of two tires. On the road, it's pleasant enough with a soft ride, though the steering is somewhat sedate and there's a variety of tread noise. Its warm weather performance is a significant weakness, with poor traction and braking in both wet and dry conditions, feeling unstable at the limit. However, in winter conditions, it transforms into a much more capable and confident performer with strong braking and manageable handling in the snow.
