A premium summer touring tire that majors on refinement, efficiency and very strong braking. The Primacy 4 feels calm and comfortable day-to-day, though it's not the most engaging option if you prioritize crisp steering feel or deep-water security.

I have a VW Golf 1.4 Tsi 90kw (2015) came factory fitted with Dunlop Sport BluResponse 205/55 16 91V.
Generally run Michelin tires on my cars. I’m looking at the Primacy 4 as all round replacements, historical spinal injuries/surgery mean comfort is a priority nowadays, in your recent test the Primacy 4 rated highly on subjective comfort.
However, in the video it was listed as a 91H, so my quandary is, would the 91H provide slightly improved subjective comfort over a 91V? Every little helps. . .
Being a 90kw model, both VW and Michelin have recommended 91H or higher for 205/55 16 wheels. Show less

The Pilot Sport 4 I have on the car now are wearing down (will get roughly around 30K km on them) and I enquired about Evo 3, Conti Premium 6 and F1 A5 (had the A3 before the PS4) and I can only find the front tires (!!!) at the moment. So I'm kinda left with the F1 A3 and the Primacy 4. I liked the F1 A3 a lot but knowing that the F1 A5 is out there I'm a bit bummed. I know one tire is a performance tire and the Primacy 4 is a touring tire and I'm not really driving the car on sport mode so I'm leaning towards the Primacy 4. Price for the Goodyear should be a bit cheaper (around €530 compared to €580 for the Primacy 4). Any opinion to get me over the line? :) Thank you. Show less

Michelin Primacy 4 Owner Reviews
Review this tireWhat owners say summarised from 173 reviews
Owners generally rate the Michelin Primacy 4 as a quiet, comfortable touring tire with strong dry grip, with 113 positive reviews out of 173 and an average score of 73.5%. Around half of owners praise its ride comfort and low road noise, and many also report reassuring dry performance and good overall longevity. The most common drawback is steering feel: around one in four owners describe the response as vague or “floaty”, with a smaller group also finding it pricey for the level of feedback. A small but notable minority (around one in twenty) say road noise increases as the tire wears.

These tires are still dangerous in cold damp conditions, they behave like budget tires. I know they’re summer tires but their prime operating window is so narrow, and the performance falls off a cliff face. They’re so bad I had to get them checked to see if they were fake.

These tires were factory fitted on my Volvo V60 T8. They do the job seemingly well and have caused no issues other than inducing some understeer through roundabouts if pushed hard. While the car itself does not seem to encourage this, I wonder whether the somewhat disconnected feel of the tires is more to blame than the car's geometry and handling. I expect to get through the winter and am likely to try something somewhat revolutionary in Volvo circles and fit Continental Sport Contact 7s next year. This will test the theory if nothing else. I think the Primacy 4 is a good tire by most standards and will suit most people, but think it is now getting long in the tooth and can be comprehensively outperformed by more modern designs.

Must admit was not impressed with the Michelins.
They are decent in the dry but sub-par in the wet. Not bad, just very mediocre; This would be acceptable for a mid-range tire but I expected better from a premium brand tire.
They've also worn out faster than I'd hoped, but this is mainly because they start off with a lower tread depth than other tires.
Michelin claim they engineer their tires to perform the same right down to the legal limit, but nobody sane runs their tires down to the legal limit; I always run my tires down to about 3mm before searching for new tires, just to give me time to find a good deal, and the Michelins lower starting tread depth just gives them a shorter life than tires with a deeper tread.
Rears still at 5mm but fronts are done. The Goodyears I replaced them with have performed much better so far in the wet and their higher starting tread depth will automatically give them an lifetime advantage.

Initial Impressions74% 4,000 milesGot 4 of these for a bargain due to ATS Euromaster offer and have had them for a few thousand miles so far.
Far better grip than the Triangle tires previously on the car. Acceleration, Braking and Cornering grip is superb in the dry, but in the wet, especially cornering grip, is surprisingly sub-par with some unexpected understeer on e.g. roundabouts in the wet and also on dry recently salted roads. Was quite surprised by that as Hankook Ventus and Goodyear Efficientgrip were much better and I expected similar from a top-tier brand like Michelin. Economy and NVH are on par with a premium tire, good but not mindblowing. Will be interesting to see how they wear over time as either they start off with a slightly lower tread depth than other tires I've used or they are wearing down quickly!

The Michelin Primacy 4 tire is overall a very good tire as a consumer product if you are looking for a generally safe and well behaved tire from the start to the end of its life.
For someone who either really leans hard on their tires or is sensitive to feel and cabin noise this tire is both impressive and somewhat average at the same time.
Initially, when driving on these tires when new they are fairly quiet in terms of road noise. Road feedback is generally good for a general use orientated tire. I've driven on sporty and soft tires and the Primacy 4 sits in a very middle ground - decently firm enough to not feel completely mushy in turns but soft enough to not be trashy over even the smallest of bumps. They can be a bit harsh/crashy on some bumps or speed bumps so they are not entirely comfort focussed.
Grip in all conditions (except ice) is excellent for what is not a performance tire, and for the car they are on provide ample reserves to manage it's power and braking performance.
As they age they do get louder - as is the case for all tires - but it seems to be somewhat more apparent with the Primacy 4 versus other tires on other cars.
Grip as they age is consistent in both dry and wet capabilities even when leaning hard on the tires in corners, roundabouts, etc.
Having covered 40,000 miles on them the fronts have reached under 3mm of tread left which means time to shop for replacements - you could easily get more life out of these tires if you granny them for their entire life.
Fuel economy is very good and maintains a high level.
They've had a good run and, compared to other tires I've had on other cars as they have aged, have maintained their performance profile very well, but the road noise is off putting. I suspect this is a trade off feature of their construction which helps offer that consistency but means as those rubber blocks wear away to almost nothing that noise energy is absorbed by the underlying rubber grooves.
Would I have bought them again (not available now as superceded by the 4S and newer 5)? Possibly, the high price is off putting but you do get the milage from them so proportional value is there.
I'd have considered the 4S as a replacement but based on reviews of the newer 5 I'm not sure I'd opt for those.
Having driven on the original first version Michelin Pilot Primacy tires some 20 years earlier (on a different car), the Primacy 4 has shown they've evolved the concept well as those were similarly generally ok all round but had a few more negative points in terms of performance and wear characteristics - swapping those for performance tires felt like a big step up in every way. The Primacy 4 on the other hand (provided they are more than the car needs) are good enough to not necessarily have you wanting to get rid of them as soon as you can for something better - e.g. you could get Pilot Sport / Eagle F1 / other and get better grip at the limit but the Primacy 4 is a lot closer to that limit while being a bit better behaved overall.

I have 10 of these tires on my current car, 4 have been taken off prematurely due to the tires distorting, so as i always replace tires in matching pairs these means 8 tires never served a full life - I would normally change around 2 mm. These were all taken off between 3 - 4 mm. Just a waste and obviously out of shape tires do not give the best or most comfortable ride. ( I tried to return some to Michelin under complaint through ATS, however Michelin pulled the plig on ATS and my complaint tires just disappeared) So still running the last pair. Grip is OK noise is fine, but as they age the ride deteriorates and they tend to really accentuate the lovely road noise on the south west M25 concrete section. I won't be buying again because losing 25% of tire life through structural failure after paying for a top premium tire does not represent value. I'm switching back to Goodyear which I ran on previous cars for 100s of thousands of miles with no issues.
