225/45 18 Tire Review Highlights

Toyo Proxes Sport 2 rated 90% while driving a BMW 320 d
Driving on for 600 spirited miles
An exceptional set of tires without a shadow of a doubt. Initially I was unsure as I've never had a set of Toyos and in particular it seemed that they were priced significantly less than the premium competition such as Michelin, Continental and Goodyear. Having had Goodyears before I was extremely happy with them but they were also much more expensive and when replacing all four there was a significant price difference that I could not justify.

Immediately my first observation compared to a previous set of Bridgestones, was that the sidewalls are extremely strong and do not have much flexion. This of course might not necessarily be good if you are looking for comfort, but these are marketed as sport tires, and so is to be expected. This makes for very sharp and precise cornering and also allows the car to respond well to changes in steering input, and provide good feedback to the driver. My complaint with having Bridgestone Turanzas before is that the weak sidewall was presumably designed such for poor road conditions; they led to extreme squealing around even slight corners and made steering response mediocre and road conditions were not communicated well. Not so here!

In terms of grip, I am extremely happy. Even when driving aggressively, it is very difficult to break traction. They are a very reassuring set of tires and even when needing to make emergency manoeuvres at higher speeds, at no point is there any concern that they will not do exactly as commanded. I have tried sharp cornering, slingshotting the car exiting roundabouts and they were extremely grippy. At one point I had to break hard and swerve to avoid someone racing on the freeway from causing a collision and again, they were extremely predictable and allowed me to get out of harm's way. In a real world situation, they did brilliantly.

On the motorway at 90mph/145kmph, again, perfect stability and lateral grip around twisty UK roads.

I haven't tried them in heavy rain yet, due to climate change and the season, we have only seen occasional showers. They were brief bouts of rain, but otherwise it's a little bit difficult to comment on their capability in wet weather.

I was definitely skeptical at first because ADAC and other reviewers put them towards the middle or bottom of the list which makes them sound quite poor. However, this must be taken in context as they are comparing the cream of the crop. In day-to-day driving and even spirited driving, the difference is really not as pronounced as you would imagine.

I paid £114.99 each on Asda Tires (cheaper than Blackcircles) - the Michelin PS5 are a whopping £174.99! 52% more for what is a relatively minimal difference between the two is absolutely not worth it unless you are driving a supercar. Seriously, look at the numbers - the Pilot Sports are nowhere near as impressive as the price would suggest them to be. When you start discussing the best tires on the market, the differences between them really are quite small.

The only criticism I would make - if there is one at all, is that they do not provide protection to the rims like tires do. Therefore, if you are parking on narrow streets and have a propensity for curbing your rims, then you'd better be careful!

Without a doubt, I will be going to Toyo next time over the top three - It is clear that the money is not spent on marketing and so they are significantly better value for money.

These came on a BMW 140i I purchased from a dealer. They are not performance tires, were absolutely lethal and made the car feel unsafe at anything above 100KPH. You felt like the car was a boat wallowing from side to side. They made me feel sick. Changing lanes was a frightening experience and they ruined the cars handling. They also caused the traction control light to flash and cut in on the lightest of bends. For anything with the remotest power buy proper tires. These are not good.

Toyo Proxes Sport 2 rated 96% while driving a Mercedes Benz CLA200
Driving on mostly town for 5000 spirited miles
Made in Japan - need I say more… Installed on a Merc with a tricky DCT that causes the fronts to break traction as it dumps the clutch. Car came with Conti EcoContact 6 (treacherous tire), tried a pair of ContiSportContact 5, and then a pair of Michelin PS5. These Toyos are by far the best off the line, and give great road feedback and handle well for their class.

Amazing tire! This is one of the tires that does everything well. Amazing grip in dry, wet, hardly any aquaplaning, but above all: 80.000km's on one set of tires!

It's not the most quiet tire, but other then that: absolute recommended!

It will slide if there is a little water, it will slide when turning on dry land, and it will slide when you step 50% deep when starting. The skates cannot be driven in the south at all.

Driving on mostly motorways for 2500 spirited miles
I have mixed feelings about this tire because they deliver what promised but they develop flat spot overnight and this is quite disappointing, not expecting this issue with a top tire. Grip and road feedback is great on dry roads not driven yet on wet, noise level and fuel consumption same as my previous tires: CSC7, Michelin PS5
Not regretting buying the tires but just disappointed with the overnight flat spots.
PS: Sidewall design is awful:)

Michelin Pilot Sport 5 rated 94% while driving a Lexus IS 220D
Driving on mostly country roads for 45000 spirited miles
So I initially got these tires for a 2nd gen Lexus IS - rolled with them around slowly at the start, then after 1 or 2 months of daily driving i decided to see how it would fair in the curves. I have the XL variant and i can say they're TOUGH. Thrashed on them quite a bit with minimal wear totalling around 30 000 kms, after the which that car died and i put the rims on a 2014 VW polo and oh boy they are amazing for hot hatches, be it hairpin turns, mountain roads or urban driving. Will definitely buy again.

Driving on mostly motorways for 1200 average miles
Tried these after recommendations from work colleagues. In the dry the felt a little vague in feedback... Noise levels ok.
However in the wet they were dangerous. Let go easily at low speed cornering.... Like roundabouts. No confidence in higher speed cornering. Felt like they were struggling for grip.....Understeer... To the point I wouldn't let the family drive my car.
I was spoilt with my original tires being Michelins but they had better road manners and grip in the wet even when they were at the end of their life with almost being bald ! No good for my car.... Maybe I was too light....
Went back to supplier who swapped them out.... Cant recommend them.....

Michelin Pilot Sport 5 rated 83% while driving a Mazda Mazda 3 (2018 5D)
Driving on mostly motorways for 53000 spirited miles
Not gonna comment on the performance as the tires were build for it. Amazed with the wear rate of the tire. Able to clock 85k KM before feeling uncomfortable with inner tire wear (rear torsion beam). However still can drive spiritedly in heavy rain but poorly in aqua planning. Up to 60k tread depth were as good new same goes with the performance. The tire started to feel less comfortable after 70k KM, higher road noise and harsh ride. Changed to MC7 “on paper better than PS5”, regretted not choosing another set of PS5 due to the lack of road feedback.

Verry nice grip on wet and dry with short breaking distances. Bought this tires blindfolded as there were no reviews being new releases and replacing PS71. As for now I would recommend them.
