BMW 320d Tire Review Highlights

Writing about the Rovelo RHP 780P given 76% (205-55-16)
Driving on a combination of roads for 13000 miles
The car had the tires on all 4 corners when bought used and we (mostly my wife) have done a bit over 13,000 miles with them. Not sure how long they have been on but loads of tread left. The car is a 320D 163 BHP and is mostly driven with a fairly full boot (trunk) and 1 to 5 adults. Driving varies between slow city to urgent urban response as well as leisurely distance with a variety of road types. The only times the stability control has kicked in has been accelerating on solid but uneven surfaces and also the odd roundabout exit in the wet when the rear has lost grip. It is C rated fro wet grip. No aquaplane experienced with these tires. We are getting typically a couple of mpg or so better than official figures predict and this size is a D for rolling resistance. I also drive a Golf TDi which currently has Goodyear Vector 4 Seasons Gen 3 which is my current best comparison and C for wet grip and around twice the price for the BMW size. I feel that the Rovelo's are decent in the dry, less noisy than the Vector (although both are 70dB, less feedback than the vector, give less confidence than the Vector in any conditions although I suspect there is also a psychological element given the desire to not push an economy brand too hard. I've put 7 for buy again as I probably would not buy these tires, not because they are poor as I think they are quite decent and from the prices I have looked up they represent excellent value for money, but I feel that we all should be buying the best tires we can afford for the conditions we drive. You never know when the better handling or grip will more than pay for the extra cost or save a life. As such I would expect to buy something better when replacing them, possibly an all season. That said I wouldn't replace unless they were bad performers, old, or the usual reasons of damage, wear etc. These are more than good enough to stay for now.

First and foremost if you buy these they can take an age to scrub in. Longer in the wet but quicker in the dry. Mine took 200 miles before grip improved. A previous reviewer commenter on grip failing in certain areas and that’s correct. Lateral grip is not their strong suit. In the wet, even accidental excitement in a corner can send you off track a little. Easy to correct with safety features such as traction control activated. It’s a progressive tire otherwise with good feedback. You can tell when they are losing grip. The noise is above average but thankfully vibration is not too bad. Dry grip impressive. Not immune to aqua planing by any means but pretty good if driving steady. In conclusion, a good all round tire, fails in some areas, excels in others, and not a sporty performance tire by any stretch of the imagination. Probably won’t outdo a dedicated winter tire but for occasional snow/ice/mud it is more than fine.

BMW 320d GT. changed to these on the two rear tires, just before a road trip from Ireland to Berlin. Oh dear, these are clearly not suited. The car is twitchy and swimmy at anything over 100kmh. Have to keep two hands on the wheel and concentrate to keep it going in a straight line. It’s almost divergent. Really unnerving. At Autobahn speeds of over 160kmh it’s a real white knuckle ride. Other peeps are clearly having a different and good experience with these but I can say unequivocally that they are not to be used on a 320d GT.

After putting these summer tires back after the winter, I very quickly noticed a vibrating effect. At this point the tires are only about 1000 km used. The vibration is caused by the tires, which are not round. The tires were clearly wobbling in the balancing machine, and causing the vibration to the car. A lot of people have had the same problem with this tire, and therefore I advise to stay away from them. If lucky, you could end with somewhat decent tires for the money, but I feel like it's not worth the lottery (and hassle). I'll get rid of these horrible tires and get some better ones.

Great tire for the price. All I can say it’s good. I bought the car with this tire on. So the tire had a few months left... but I enjoyed every bit of it... Not best in grip and thats why the wear is so good, but a perfect fit for a average driver or even for a person who likes oversteer now and then... But its a good tire

A great tire for a average driver. Not the tire for a person looking for max grip or max wear. Its soft but it doesn’t provide as much grip... rather go for the RE003 RFT But overall a great tire Bridgestone’s Run Flats are the best it’s true. Quite pricey for a average tire.

Great tire for the price. I wanted a cheap tire for the rear and that’s what I got. Obviously for oversteer, please don’t put them at the front if you are track day driver I enjoy playing around, so I used it to drift, slip and slide... and am so pleased with the way it handled. If I get a set of run flats, I would definitely buy again. Many complained about wet weather control and aquaplaning but it’s great for a everyday driver. Once you put the tire to the test in wet weather, you’ll experience aquaplaning and little traction.. I say again, Great tire for the price for summer.
