245/40 18 Tire Review Highlights

Kenda Kuavela SL rated 60% while driving a Audi A4 2.0 TDI 140 SLine
Driving on a combination of roads for 46000 average miles
The weirdest tire I have ever driven on, 75000 km of unbridled weirdness. I threw them on in a pinch to pass the NCT (Irish annual test) for the daily. It was my intention to burn through them relatively quickly and change onto a premium brand again. However, they have gotten to a point where they are so hard that all wet weather grip is gone, yet there is still plenty of tread left. When initially put on the front, they had reasonable grip, feeling was a bit spongey and they were noisy but again, I can't fault the dry grip. Braking distances were decent in the dry but you were living on the edge in the rain. No repeatability in how they behaved whatsoever. Feedback and handling were middle of the road for dry, again wet weather was woeful. I would not recommend these to anyone in an EU country with plenty of rain. Wear is a hard one to score, as I said, tens of thousands of kilometres with minimal wear, but I don't think it is a good thing, I'd take half the life and twice the wet weather performance if possible. Don't have them on any car over 100 kW if you want to be safe when driving fast.

Continental ContiSportContact 5 P rated 81% while driving a Audi A4 b9 2.0 tdi
Driving on a combination of roads for 25000 average miles
Milage was mainly on motorways, but time spent driving was predominantly on country roads of varying roughness. Dry braking was excellent, even under heavy braking ABS bite point was predictable and consistent. Wet grip was good initially, however, as the tire got below the Continental raindrop marker performance decreased significantly. To be fair to Conti, this is still stipulated on their website. Feedback was decent near breakaway there is a huge window of transient grip which would suit people unfamiliar with pushing tires. I wouldn't recommend for track at all. I can't fault the wear, pressure was checked weekly, and wear was seen to be even across the main body of the tread. Comfort was decent on motorway and not particularly noisy. The sidewall seems to be a bit stiffer than others in the class I have tried, fine for when pushing a bit, but some bumps felt harsher than expected. I would buy again if in a pinch, they're not a bad tire, but I think money could be better spent elsewhere.

Pirelli Dragon Sport rated 57% while driving a Ford Falcon xr6
Driving on a combination of roads for 2000 spirited miles
These tires are good tires for daily driving on reasonably smooth roads, but I have found they struggle when pushed on backroads and make above-average noise on highways and course chip country roads. The tires do not have as high a level of grip as the 'Sport' name would suggest, and shouldn't be compared to PS4/RE003 or equivalent tires. Anyone looking at these should think of them as a mild performance tire, with more grip than the average commuter tire, but less than an 'enthusiast' tire. However, at the limit, the tires let go progressively and hold up well to braking. Some slight understeer and chatter can be felt in the rain, but can be driven around.

Pirelli Cinturato P7 C2 rated 49% while driving a Subaru 2011 Impreza WRX STI
Driving on mostly country roads for 16800 spirited miles
When driven in warm temps, you get good grip on a spirited drive, but when it comes to the wet, the tires don't give you enough confidence as they lose their grip. Wear is OK and expect from a touring tire, but if you like a spirited drive and live in the UK with a mix of climates, I would look else where before considering these.

Michelin Pilot Sport 5 rated 73% while driving a Mercedes Benz E Class Estate
Driving on a combination of roads for 7000 average miles
I've had PS5s on the front on my 2016 S212 E-Class for around a year (7-10k ish) and they've been excellent so far, performance of all kinds is great. I've noticed in the last month or so the tires are starting to step on the inner tread blocks or go out of shape so they now sound like a pair of faulty wheel bearings. I am a technician at a Mercedes dealer & use our aligner to regularly check my geometry which is always fine, shocks and bushings, etc are all ok so I'm forced to conclude its the tires themselves. I'll be hanging on to them as long as I can tolerate the noise but I suspect i'll have had enough before theyre worn out (they currently have around 4-5mm remaining). Oddly my 120,000 mile Seat Exeo with the same tires doesn't have this problem!

Bridgestone Turanza 6 rated 84% while driving a Audi 1.8T Quattro
Driving on mostly motorways for 2000 spirited miles
Overall very good tire with very good grip on dry and wet.
Even the Bridgestone Turanza 6 delivers a reduction of 2db in pass-by noise versus its predecessor, comparing with other models i had before, Turanza 6 is not that quiet i was expecting. On motorway there is that tire noise and on long distance is becoming annoying. Also being a Summer Premium Touring tire, comparing with the Asymmetric 6 which is Summer Max Performance and i had before, the side of the Turanza 6 is not that hard, and doesn't offer the best feedback in the curves.
Overall, a good tire with very good treadwear.

Nokian Snowproof P rated 98% while driving a Mercedes Benz C250 CDI Blutec
Driving on a combination of roads for 1000 spirited miles
After wra3 and wra4 (both excellent on dry and wet, excellent on snow and ice, the wra3 better at very low, almost freezing temperatures, the wra4 better on snow), I tried the snowproof P. I haven't yet tried the new directional design on snow , but on dry surfaces they essentially follow the excellent handling performance of the two previous models with asymmetrical design. With the rudder, in the absence of longitudinal channels, the footprint on the ground seems to be wider, and the cornering grip perhaps slightly greater. The sidewall is stiffer than previous models, and this gives better handling, a lower steering angle and lateral lie, further improving driving dynamics. Anyone who says that Nokians don't handle the road well on wet, dry and snow either doesn't know how to drive in different road conditions, or their car has problems. I've read about deformations on this model, well it depends on whether during season changes you keep the tires resting in the right place, in the right way, and this applies to every brand and model.

Kumho Ecsta PA51 rated 83% while driving a Ford Falcon BFII XR6
Driving on mostly town for 31000 average miles
I found the Kumho PA51 to be a good quality tire with low road noise, very good dry weather handling, reasonable wet weather handling and good tire wear. replacing the tires on a FZord Falcon FG Mk2, coming up to 50,000 km but probably should have changed 5k ago.
