Toyota Corolla Tire Review Highlights
Writing about the Pirelli Ice Friction given 98% (225-45-17)
I bought my 2021 1.8 hybrid Toyota Corolla Touring Sports in summer 2025 and the previous owner gave me old winter tires - two Sunfull SF-982 (almost new) from China and two Bridgestone Blizzak LM005 (5 mm tread left). I live in Latvia and while previous winters were mild, January this year started with heavy snowfalls and cold up to -20 degrees celsius. When driving on the roads during snowfall, when the road is covered by a small layer of snow, I noticed that my car was slipping on almost every turn, even a slight one, so the mentioned tires were not good at all. I decided that I need to buy new winter tires and started looking at Nordic Friction tires. I read tests and reviews on Tirereviews and other websites and my choice narrowed to Goodyear Ultragrip Ice 3 and Pirelli Ice Friction. I saw several reports, both here and on other forums, that Goodyear wears very fast, with 2mm wearing for 5000-6000 km driven, so I was very sceptical about that and decided to go with Pirelli Ice Friction.

Dry and Wet Grip
I didn't have any issues at all when driving on dry and wet roads. I am a calm driver, so maybe I'm not the best person to comment on that. On dry and wet surface I did not ever have traction control going on, even in the moments of active acceleration.

Road feedback and handling
Steering is precise and crisp. No issues at all.

Ice and Snow grip
I had a trip to Warsaw, Poland and back to Latvia. On the way back I had an ice pellets (icy rain) and then in Lithuania closer to Latvia - heavy snowfall with the roads being covered in snow. I was driving like 70-80 km/h and didn't have any dangerous moments when the car was hard to handle. While it is a FWD car, I felt like I am driving an AWD car - no issues at all.
We had 15-20 cm of snow everywhere and I did not have any problems passing that kind of roads.
In regards to the ice - if it is a clear ice, then of course car starts slipping. These are not studded tires, so I think it is natural. However, once the car starts slipping, it is pretty easy to gain control back. I had some moments this winter when the cars in the front suddenly started to brake and the road was covered in so called black ice - of course those situations were a bit stressful, but the car did a good job stopping on time.

Wear
I have driven 5500 km since I installed Pirelli Ice Friction and there is no wear at all. I made measurements after installing the tires and the tread depth was about 7.8-8mm (depends on where on the tire to measure). I have measured the tread depth both on the front and the rear - nothing has really changed, so I am impressed. I thought that driving on Polish autobahn with speeds around 130-140 km/h would naturally eat some of the tread, but no - impressive.

Comfort
Before buying these tires I saw some reviews on different forums that the tires are loud. I checked Pirelli website and actually my size 225/45 R17 does not have Pirelli's noice reduction technology, so I was a bit sceptical, but decided to sort of ignore those reviews. I was right to do so - the tires are super quiet and comfortable. I do not feel the bumps on the road as much as with Sunfull/Bridgestone that were installed before, and Pirelli's are much more comfortable and quieter than Sunfull/Bridgestone and original summer Falken ZIEX ZE914 that were installed from the factory and had their last season in summer 2025.

To sum up, my experience with Pirelli Ice Friction was great and I recommend these tires to everyone who thinks of buying Nordic Friction studless tires. They were also cheaper than alternatives from other Premium manufacturers - I paid 592 euros for a set of 4.

I have had these tires on 3 different Toyota Corolla TS, this is their stock tire, first time I left them on for about 6 months, which was about 6500 miles, as I was loathe to swap them for something nicer until I had put some wear on them, the second and third time (I swapped my 2022 Corolla TS for a 2025 Corolla TS 3 weeks ago) I changed them within the month, less than 1000 miles, as I cannot stand the constant cabin noise from these tires.

Short version, horrible tire, the cabin noise is honestly just outrageous, harsh ride, and doesn't really cope well with the pock marked roads, and if you give it a bit of spirited drive, they 'scrub' on the edge, noticeably, and quite honestly these tires just do not suit the car at all.

Do not be fooled with the 68db rating, this is the drive by noise, which is probably quite close, as most of the noise apparently ends up in the cabin, and make sure you check the pressures too, because Toyota and tire places always over inflate them, which makes these tires even more harsh sounding and gives a rough ride on and lots of surfaces. Also, do not be fooled by the EcoRun name, these tires are not actually that great for fuel economy, C rated, there are lots of tires with a better fuel rating, and they are also not the greatest tires for wet conditions, B rated, and they behave mostly ok in the wet, nothing special, but to be honest, for a car that comes in just short of £40k these tires are a joke when there are so many other better tires for similar money that do a far better job in every aspect than these tires.
I have mixed driving so lots of city/town driving, where they are mostly quietish when just pootling about under 30MPH, which is probably why so many cabbies keep them on, country driving, which is a bit more spirited, and motorway driving, and they are invasive and noisy on all but the smoothest of roads, as long as you are going in a straight line, and even then they are noticeable, and on any other road surface, bring on the rumble at various levels.

I have swapped them on my latest Corolla, as I did on my previous Corolla, for Michelin CC3 Sports, quieter, nicer drive and ride, use slightly less fuel, cope better with the rubbish roads we have here in the UK and they cope so so much better in the cold, aka < 7C, not just when it is snowing, the difference is instantly noticeable.

I would not recommend the Falken ZIEX ZE914 EcoRun to anyone, there is no getting away from the fact these are mid grade tires at best, yet with an almost premium grade price, which is crazy really, so just leave them on the car as long as you can live with them and then swap them for a tire that suits your needs and wants, you wont be disappointed, as long as you pick the pick the right tire for your car and driving requirements, you will be amazed at how much quieter your car cabin sounds, there are a ton of great tires that will out perform these tires in pretty much all areas, and will do it quieter job of it too, some are even cheaper than the Falkens or if you can afford it, just pay the extra and get a real premium grade tire.

Writing about the Toyo NanoEnergy 3 given 83% (175-65-14)
First time installed TOYO NE03 86T, after using various tires on same vehicle such as Goodyear, Continental, and others.
The ride is relatively firm and stable, handling seems to be good, these are XL tires, so the road feedback is a bit stronger. Braking response looks good for dry conditions, and light rain. This is definitely a touring set of tires, built durable but plain and stiff, so I drive accordingly. TPMS system for monitoring tires pressure and temperature is recommended for enhanced safety.

Driving on mostly motorways for 30000 average miles
Tires are adequate, I wouldn't call them amazing in any field. They struggled with traction in both the dry and the wet even under moderate acceleration.
For those who do mostly city or backcountry driving these are okay, I wouldn't recommend them to anyone who does mostly highway driving, especially given there are competitors which cost the same or less.

I run these for for 4 years and 50k miles. While they are expensive to buy, they do last a long time and are consistent throughout their lifespan. Great all around handling and especially good at road noise and comfort. I replaced these with Primacy 5 and so far they are at least as good!

Writing about the Nokian Seasonproof 2 given 95% (205-55-16)
Driving on mostly motorways for 1000 easy going miles
Extremely quiet tires - they transformed my not very well sound insulated Corolla hybrid TS!!! Done only 1000 motorway miles with the Nokians so far in the currently wet UK weather, with anything between 0 to 10ish degrees C and the tires feel very safe. They do well in corners too - complaints there. Haven't tried braking hard with them yet, and hope I won't ever need to do so. I am not a racer boy anymore and always keep plenty of distance from the vehicle in front. Haven't tried them on snow yet, and I really hope to see some snow this year, I am ready!!! Wear still to be seen, and I hope they will last as long as my previous Good Year EGP2 - did almost 50k miles with them and the rears(which I kept) still have 4.7mm (good enough for another summer). Only one draw back on the Seasonproof 2(so far) - lost approximately 3 MPG compared to the EGP2s. If you are looking for a very quiet and comfortable all season tire, which is one of the best in wet, and should do well on snow(warm dry to be seen)....I do recommend the Nokian Seasonproof 2

Driving on a combination of roads for 800 average miles
I live at the Minnesota/Manitoba border where as I type this it’s 5 degrees fahrenheit. I’ve found this tire to be very well rounded. The dry grip is impressive and shocked me. I truly don’t want to take these off in the spring they felt so good in the 40/50 degree weather of our warm October. Practically zero noise, still can get upwards of 44mpg on the highway at around 65mph. But of course these are snow tires. The snow handling is probably as good as it gets. They feel like summer tires in the middle of July while driving through an inch of snow. Their true specialty imo is ice traction however. I’ve hit a couple icy intersections while making turns and I could feel the car start to lose control and skid, but it’s a controlled and slow motion sliding due to the rolling resistance of tires. It’s easy to correct the vehicle and get back on course. Perhaps Hakkas are a bit better on snow and ice, but these are a better tier overall. I’m sold on the VK line.

Driving on a combination of roads for 4000 average miles
Dry Grip:
Very good to excellent, even when driving spiritedly on twisty roads.

Wet Grip:
Very good straight-line aquaplaning resistance. On twisty roads at average to spirited speeds, they make that “I’m losing grip” noise, but they actually don’t slip at all. Still, the sound makes me feel a bit insecure, so I tend to lower the speed.

Noise:
Compared to the OEM Falken SN832B they replaced, they are one level noisier in town, but it’s a premium, low-pitch noise that you get used to over time. However, they really impressed me with how quiet they are on the highway! I think these tires are primarily made for cruising. I don’t think there is a quieter tire above 120 km/h on the market — the only thing you hear is aerodynamic noise.
Keep in mind my car is a latest-generation full hybrid, so it’s very quiet and even minor tire noise is noticeable.

Comfort:
My previous tires were soft. The Primacy 5 are a bit firmer, BUT the way they absorb imperfections and the overall driving feel at the end of the day is actually more comfortable and pleasant than before. I don’t know how the engineers managed it, but they succeeded — I think they really shine in this segment and might be the most comfortable tire on the market.

Wear:
They’re made to last 50,000+ km, so after just 5,000 km they show almost no wear. That said, be patient and give them 2,000–3,000 km to show their virtues. I keep the manufacturer’s recommended pressures, which seem to work perfectly for the car and for my preference as well: 2.5 bar front, 2.4 bar rear.

Writing about the Falken ZIEX ZE914 EcoRun given 58% (225-40-18)
Driving on a combination of roads for 7600 average miles
My 2023 Toyota Corolla came factory-fitted with Falken ZIEX ZE914 EcoRun tires, and after 7,500 miles, they’ve proven to be solid everyday performers with a few compromises.

Ride & Noise: Comfort is good, with the tires soaking up bumps well. However, they’re a bit noisy, especially on coarse asphalt or at motorway speeds.

Grip & Traction: Dry and wet grip are predictable and safe for normal driving. When accelerating hard from a standstill, the traction control activated twice, showing these tires prioritise efficiency over strong off-the-line grip.

Handling & Braking: Handling is neutral with slightly muted steering feel. Braking performance is consistent and confidence-inspiring.

Economy & Wear: After 7,500 miles, tread wear is even and fuel economy is slightly improved thanks to the tire’s low rolling resistance.
