Passenger Car Summer Max Performance Tires Tire Review Highlights

Pirelli P Zero PZ5 rated 0% while driving a SEAT Leon Cupra ST 290 (FWD)
Driving on a combination of roads for 200 spirited miles
Initial thoughts on PZ5 compared to SportContact 7 which I had previously fitted on 235/35R19 size.

The PZ5 sits a lot more square on a 8.5 inch wheel on this size. Previous SportContact 7 almost had a slight stretched look whilst the PZ5 looks like it fits a wider rim more comfortably.

PZ5 is significantly more comfortable on small bumps and unevenness of the road and quieter and than SC7. There is a slight "howling" noise at around 80-90kmh on the PZ5 that I didn't notice on SC7 but they also were significantly louder all around.

Steering feel I find on the PZ5 to be a lot poorer on the initial input. The SC7 felt super sharp almost go-karty whilst the PZ5 feels you need to load the tire a lot more to get the same reaction. This feeling is amplified at highway speeds 120-140kmh where the PZ5 feels way more unstable on sharp direction changes compared to the SC7. Once the PZ5 is loaded to its side after the poorer initial reaction during cornering the grip feels to be the same.

Conclusions: If you want a tire that offers the best feel whilst sacrificing comfort and noise choose the SportContact7. If you want a more comfortable and quieter tire and you are willing to sacrifice initial steering feel go for the PZ5.

Hankook Ventus Evo rated 90% while driving a Alfa Romeo MiTo
Driving on a combination of roads for 1250 spirited miles
This is a short update to my initial review (submitted on April 4, 2025). I only submitted a wet grip score this time. Had a few more commutes and a roundtrip to Germany of well over 1,000 kms. On the wet grip, drove on an absolutely flooded German Autobahn (windshield wipers struggled to keep up), and it was steady as you'd like. Lost grip for the first time taking a wet round-about at a irresponsibly high speed (no-one around to hurt but the car). Even then, I was impressed on how long it took to lose grip.

Overall, I have driven on these tires over 2,000 kilometres by now. Very impressed with them. Maybe not the most sport-biased tire available (steering feel, “soft” & silent), but very grippy in both dry & wet, and they inspire loads of confidence. Can recommend to anyone as an everyday ‘sportier’ tire.

Michelin Pilot Sport 5 rated 74% while driving a Ford Focus ST
Driving on mostly town for 400 average miles
I have used 2,5mm of my tires in 3 months! Surely this cannot be right! Jeez, how soft are these tires!

Hankook Ventus S1 evo 3 rated 79% while driving a BMW 140i xdrive
Driving on mostly country roads for 3500 spirited miles
Very good in wet conditions. Grip levels are ok in the dry but very safe feel when pushing hard. Noise and comfort very good. No signs of wear so far. Great allrounder, will try on trak i hope.

Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 6 rated 74% while driving a Volkswagen Golf MK7 R 300 BHP
Driving on mostly country roads for 15000 average miles
These tires are very competent in all aspects. However, the very soft sidewall makes the rear feel super squishy on my Golf R. It's the only reason I will probably not replace them again. I have had two sets on this car so far.

Michelin Pilot Sport 5 rated 94% while driving a Lexus IS 220D
Driving on mostly country roads for 45000 spirited miles
So I initially got these tires for a 2nd gen Lexus IS - rolled with them around slowly at the start, then after 1 or 2 months of daily driving i decided to see how it would fair in the curves. I have the XL variant and i can say they're TOUGH. Thrashed on them quite a bit with minimal wear totalling around 30 000 kms, after the which that car died and i put the rims on a 2014 VW polo and oh boy they are amazing for hot hatches, be it hairpin turns, mountain roads or urban driving. Will definitely buy again.

Continental SportContact 7 rated 90% while driving a Audi Q3
Driving on a combination of roads for 200 average miles
An excellent tire! - Originally had CSC6 on the rear and Hankook ion EVO AS tires on the front. The car feels a lot more agile now. The grip in the dry is phenomenal and is just as good in the wet. They give you a lot of confidence on the road. Will definitely buy again.

Kumho Ecsta Sport PS72 rated 83% while driving a BMW M140i F20
Driving on a combination of roads for 1000 average miles
Dry grip is excellent, same level as GY Asym6 I’d say.

I bit harsher and a bit noisier as the (very silent) Asym6, but the PS72 has a bit not direct/sporty feeling compared with Asym6

Bridgestone Potenza S01 rated 67% while driving a Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution VI
Driving on a combination of roads for 4500 spirited miles
Had these tires on my Mitsubishi Evo 6 when I bought it nearly new back in 2000. The grip was fantastic but came with a very high wear rating. They lasted for 4500 miles maximum, which conveniently fitted in with the manufacturer service intervals and worn out brake pad replacements. I tried the equivalent Michelin performance tire and it totally changed the grip and handling….for the worse. Makes sense, if you want grip you have to accept a softer tire with a high wear rating.

Hankook Ventus S1 evo2 rated 100% while driving a BMW 520i
Driving on mostly motorways for 60000 average miles
these are the OEM tires on the BMW 520 year 2020. Amazing in everything. Had to change due after 5 years of fit.
I drove 70k km.
Excellent conditions in everything. Hightly recommended.

Michelin Pilot Sport 4 S * rated 100% while driving a BMW 230i
Driving on a combination of roads for 500 miles
Previously my BMW 220i Coupe (G42) with M-Sport Pro Pack (19” upgraded alloys) was on OE Pirelli P Zero (*) from factory and were very good in all respects. Decided to go Michelin this time and very pleased with the decision as these OE PS4S are in another league. Dry grip, steering feel, cornering and overall driving experience is at another level and surpasses the P Zeros in every respect.

I cannot comment for wet handling yet as we are having some great sunshine in the UK and neither for wear, as only been on my car for x3 weeks. Overall, these tires have significantly improved the driving experience of my BMW and they are much more comfortable than the P Zeros on both motorways and local roads, especially over rougher roads. These tires are standard fitment on the M240i and they definitely provide a massive improvement on the 220i and same if you have the 230i, so would highly recommend getting these when you’re ready for replacement. 100% from me so far!

Amazed how this tire performs in wet conditions. Simply tangible difference between the premiumcontact 6 and pirelli cinturato P7.
