225/55 17 Tire Review Highlights

Toyo Proxes CF1 rated 79% while driving a Honda Odyssey JDM
Driving on a combination of roads for 40000 average miles
For a daily drive car, more concern with comfort, fuel economy and quietness, this is the tire. No aqua planning even at 30%, but grip is average on wet surface.

BFGoodrich Advantage Control HT rated 80% while driving a Holden adventra
Driving on mostly town for 1000 easy going miles
Put a set of these (225/55R17 101W) on a Holden Adventra, have only done a few thousand kilometers so far but initial impressions are very good. They were the cheapest option of the real tire brands and with BF Goodrich being part of Michelin I figured they should be a decent tire. They have plenty of tread and full depth sipes which should help keep wet braking performance as they wear down. They feel plush/comfortable to drive on and I haven't had issues with traction in the dry or wet but keep in mind being driven on public roads and being an AWD car they haven't gotten anywhere near the limit. Noise levels are good, oddly I'd say they are quieter than average on smooth surfaces but slightly louder than average on coarse surfaces, by no means 'noisey' though. Fuel economy is about the same as the tires they replaced (a combined set of Zetum and Rapid tires approx 50% worn). Early days so cannot comment on treadwear, but the rating is 600. I was a little surpised that the UTQG traction rating is a 'B' but I'm not sure how much this means. Based on the performance I've seen to date I wouldn't hesitate to buy them again, but in reality would probably try something different just for the sake of variety.

Dunlop SP Sport LM 705 rated 83% while driving a Mazda 6
Driving on a combination of roads for 50000 average miles
I've done 1,500 kilometers on these tires and so far they've performed wonderfully, both in dry and wet conditions. I haven't had any problems. Obviously, I haven't pushed them to their limits and I don't think I will. In normal driving, there are no complaints. On the contrary, what surprises me most is their smoothness. When going over speed bumps, potholes, etc., it's wonderful, it's as if I had installed the best shock absorbers.

Double Coin DC99 rated 14% while driving a Opel insignia
Driving on a combination of roads for 3000 average miles
It came with the car when I bought it, it's on front axle, I had a few cars with different tires, but these are the worst.
It should be illegal on public roads.
Very very little grip.

Dunlop SP Sport LM 705 rated 80% while driving a Mazda 6
Driving on a combination of roads for 0 average miles
I mounted them yesterday and went out for a test drive. It was a very rainy day. I took tight corners at 90 km/h and didn't feel the car lose stability or control. I'm coming from Toyo Proxes Sport 1s, which felt better in wet corners, but these tires perform well and are very good value.
Now, if anyone wants to take corners at 150 km/h in the rain, before looking for a good tire, they should consult a psychologist. Cheers.

Goodyear EfficientGrip rated 77% while driving a Skoda Octavia estate
Driving on a combination of roads for 19000 average miles
I generally liked these tires. No complaints about grip or handling in wet or dry conditions. However I have just replaced them with a different make of tire due to the number of punctures I’ve suffered in the last few months. I know our roads aren’t great but the EfficientGrips seem to be particularly susceptible, especially in the sidewalls. The latest puncture, which rendered a front type scrap, was caused by a thorn which frankly should not have been able to penetrate a tire! When removed I could easily snap the thorn by hand. I could have again bought a new EfficientGrip but decided against (three of my tires had 4.5mm tread left) and have swapped to a different make.

General Altimax Arctic 12 rated 89% while driving a Infiniti G37
Driving on mostly town for 500 spirited miles
I’ve been using the General Tire Altimax Arctic 12 (studded ) this winter, and they’ve been a game-changer in harsh conditions. The **traction on ice and packed snow is outstanding**, giving me confidence even on slippery roads. The studs really help with stability, especially when braking or cornering on black ice.

One thing that really impressed me is the **wet traction in cold temperatures**. Unlike some winter tires that can feel slippery in slushy or rainy conditions, these handle wet roads **very well**, maintaining control and grip.

In deep snow, they also perform impressively, keeping the car stable and predictable. One downside is that, like most studded tires, they are **noisy on dry pavement**. However, that’s a small trade-off for the **safety and performance they provide** in extreme winter conditions.

Overall, if you need **serious winter traction** with **great wet performance in the cold**, the **Altimax Arctic 12 (studded)** is a solid choice. Just be prepared for some road noise on clear days!

Yokohama Geolandar CS 4S G061 rated 80% while driving a Suzuki vitara s 1,4 boosterjet
Driving on mostly country roads for 5000 spirited miles
Excellent tire! Outperforms other medium summer tires in wet and dry performance, and its aggressive tread pattern drives specially well on mud/forest tracks. One thing to consider is that the sidewalls are stiff, so lots of road feedback (also very precise cornering).

Kumho Solus 4S HA32 rated 59% while driving a Mazda 6 Wagon
Driving on mostly motorways for 15800 easy going miles
I already wrote a review shortly after I bought these tires. Then I was quite positive. Sadly my opinion changed, and not for the good.
First things first. From the beginning I had some vibration problems. Especially at speeds around 60 km/h I experienced a wobble in the steering. I moved the front tires to the rear vise versa, that was a bit better but the vibration was irritating. Recently I went to a tire shop for road force balancing my rears. The force was very high, but after rotating the tires on the rims most of the vibration has gone. I’ve never had this issue with any other types of tires.
Another thing I dislike very much are the grip levels. Especially in the lateral direction on a wet road it is quite bad. But also in a longitudinal direction. One time I had to do an emergency stop, and I really was shocked about the braking distance necessary.
Grip levels in dry conditions are okayish. Same in winter conditions with some snow.
Stability straight ahead could be better. Many little steering corrections are necessary all the time. This is a bit tiring.
The comfort level is good, the tires don’t produce a lot of noise. Wear also seems to be okay.
They are cheap, but I would not buy them again.

No other tire compares with this one on wet, even on wet dirty roads, great handling even in a huge storm and heavy rain.

Continental EcoContact 6 rated 73% while driving a Mazda 6 Wagon
Driving on a combination of roads for 4000 average miles
It's not a bad tire performance wise, very good grip on corners at high speeds on country highway, wet grip is mediocre, when starting from an uphill traffic light, it skids easily. And the tread durability is very concerning. It came with only 6.5mm tread new and with only 7000km on those tires they have shown very obvious wear. I probably won't buy them again as I drive a lot and these have bad durability, however if you don't drive a lot it's a decent performing tire.
