Mazda MX5 Tire Review Highlights

Writing about the Davanti Ecoura HP1 given 93% (195-50-15-)
Driving on mostly country roads for 1000 spirited miles
Put these on my mx-5 for road use after using their track tire. Seem like a great tire. Had them on a few weeks so haven't scored the wear as it's too early to judge, but the grip in both the dry and wet seem very good. Very predictable steering response and seem to have reduced the noise in the cabin. The track tires are much better than the Nankang and 888r I've had on before

Would NOT recommend at all . Have these tires on my Mazda MX5 . They are showing signs of spitting on the shoulders on all 4 tires. Tread is still around 6mm.
So will need replacing despite having plenty of tread left on them.
Contacted Nexen direct by email & received a very swift response very impressed
This was not long lived as have tried several times to contact Nexen & got no response at all via email
Manged to get contact number of person who had email me.
When I called I did get the run around from them. Not possible to put my call through from reception , really.
Left several messages on mobile number that I got. They did not have the courtesy to return my calls or emails.

Previous owner put these awful tires on the back of the car. I don’t drive fast, so really can’t comment on dry grip, although the odd tire squeal when setting off on a hill. Which I had put down to a light car with rear wheel drive (Mx5) but now think it was due to rock had rubber. Yesterday I got caught in torrential rain on the motorway. No problems in a straight line but on the twisty B roads they were lethal! Driving at about 30mph the back end would wiggle and we span across the road at one time fortunately missing everything.
The car has Hankook Ventus Prime 4 on the front which look like new so I am swapping out the rears for the same. The Klebers are lethal!

Driving on a combination of roads for 10000 spirited miles
Tested on 2000 NB MX5 with Teinz coilovers

I have another review closer to the beginning of life for these tires, this is a near end of life update

got the MX5 aligned recently, and although it drove well before (its hard to find a poor handling mx5) the toe out on the front destroyed the tires faster than they otherwise would have worn.

however with the new alignment (F: 0 toe; -1.5 camber; 4.5 caster R: -1.3 camber; -0.50mm toe) both the car and tires feel alot better.

I also have done a track day with them, they felt great for about 1 1/2 laps of a ~1 minute track but become really greasy afterward as they overheat somewhat quick. this said that is not a criticism of the tire as it is not designed for track work.

Dry grip on the Twisties / Touge is very good and unless you are really pushing it (to the dismay of local law enforcement) these have more than adequate grip for fun spirited driving. However you can get them loose if you try and of course will not have the pace of dedicated semislicks.

wet grip is very good, you can get them loose with some ease if you try, however to do so would not be 'driving to conditions'. for their class in an Australian climate their wet grip is great (probably not PS4S great, but not so bad it's dangerous.)

only thing I'd say is wear is not that great, granted i did have a poor alignment that accelerated wear, but i would eyeball the wear as below average for it's class. not horrible, not great either. the PS71's on my MX5 have lasted 15,000 km of driving on a harsh alignment (toe out on front) 60-70% of that driving was at 7-9 tenths on twisty roads, so abnormally hard compared to most.

I wouldn't recommend this tire to those who drive Touge / Track at pace often in summer or in a climate where you can run summer tires year round (like australia) . go for a semi slick in that case if you can stomach the poor wet performance. or a PS4/PS4s/PS5/PSs5 if it is in your size (PS4/PS5 also overheat on track so keep that in mind) a PS71 is simply not made for a Track/ heavy Touge use case.

if you need wet weather grip and take your car for a 6-8 tenths run every now and then but need a good daily tire, these tires will be great value for money.

a PSA:
get an alignment. Don't care if you've had the car for a month and the previous owner said they got one recently, get an alignment as any handling or wear issues cannot be blamed on the tire unless you personally have taken your car to get an alignment yourself. a fresh alignment, especially custom performance specs (do your research!) can have a monumental impact on how the car feels regardless of tire choice.

Driving on mostly town for 1200 spirited miles
I was pleasantly surprised by the lower sound level compared to other snow tires, however they were still quite loud. I have been very happy with them grip-wise and they seem to have great control and braking in the snow. They were also fairly cheap compared to other more well-known brands. Overall very happy with them.

MX-5 NA with 1.8 VVT engine, fitting 195/50R15 to 15x6" Enkei MK2 sport rims for all season fast road driving in the UK including 700mi straight trips from south coast England to Scottish highlands in winter. These tires have never lacked in the wet or dry regardless of how hard they were pushed on the road, within road limits.

The MX-5 is a light car coming in at roughly 1ton and 140hp with the VVT engine swap with an open differential, this made spinning the one driving rear wheel relatively easy for the original fitted budgets from the previous owner. With the CC+ fitted I've had to intentionally clutch kick the car to slip the wheel. Only when driving in the cold (

They're pretty good in dry conditions for cheap tires but terrible on wet roads. If the road is any wetter than slightly damp my Mazda mx5 wants to slide all over going above 45mph which is not great in south Florida.

Driving on track for 100 spirited miles
Tires that feel like any dampness won't have enough grip... Might be because of a harder compound... 420TW compared to TW300 that i use usually, feel like they need a bit of heat before gripping properly.

Writing about the Nokian Hakkapeliitta 9 given 71% (195-55-16-)
Driving on mostly motorways for 5000 spirited miles
I have run Hakkapeliitta 9s on heavier cars with little discernable impact during dry weather. The Mazda MX-5 is particularly affected by these tires compared to its summer tires. I had these tires installed in southeastern USA before driving the car to Alaska in December. They were almost frighteningly loose in the 15 - 20 deg C temperatures of the southeast. As I drove north into Canada and the temperature dropped below freezing, the tires were much better behaved even on dry roads.

I elected not to get the studded versions to minimize noise. I will probably go studded next time or go with a studless design like the Nokian R5 or a Michelin X-Ice. These tires make the MX-5 a decent winter commuter that my wife is comfortable driving year-round.

Driving on a combination of roads for 20000 spirited miles
I replaced the Pirelli P-Zeros that came on my car with these after I had the rear end step out at very low speed on a wet roundabout with the Pirellis.

Straight away I felt more confident in wet conditions. The MX-5 being a light, rear wheel drive car, I don't go too crazy when there's standing water but I was at least comfortable to drive in bad conditions compared to the old Pirellis.

In the dry my feelings were similar. I could throw the car into corners without so much as a squeak from the tires. Everything feels very assured.

I primarily daily drive the car but I took it to a track day and they held up remarkably well. The car would bite down into corners and you could feel a natural drop off in grip as you nearest the limit. At that point the tires had already done about 18,000 miles and after the partly melted tread had come unstuck, it seems that they have a lot more life left to give!

Writing about the Falken Azenis RT660 given 77% (225-45-17-)
Driving on track for 3000 spirited miles
For a 200 treadwear tire the RT660s did better than I expected. Over two years and approximately six autocross schools and test and tunes along with a couple thousand road miles these tires held up well and exceeded the performance expectations I had. During fast road driving they really didn’t show any negative behaviors, they just stuck. While not my first choice for driving in the rain, the few times they were driven in the rain they really handled it OK. The only downside that I noticed is that anytime you run over a painted stripe on the road or a slick piece of pavement, the tire tread makes a very distinctive noise. The first time I drove on them I actually thought I left wheel nuts loose and pulled over to check torque. Just like all 200 tread wear tires, they pick up every pebble and sand you encounter in parking lots (or your gravel driveway) and throw it into your wheel liner. This is just the cost of super sticky tires, but understand that going in.

If you are looking for a fun slidey tire, this is not it but this is a tire that will stay stuck to the road in both wet and dry conditions. Truly amazing levels of grip that give high levels of confidence going into every corner.
