Passenger Car Summer Trackday and Competition Tires Tire Review Highlights

Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 rated 60% while driving a Renault clio 197
Driving on a combination of roads for 300 spirited miles
Had them on a fully stock 3rd gen Clio RS with Cup package, used them 50/50 road/small racetrack. Definitely not the fastest semislick, but the most civilized ones - extremely predictable at the limit, surprisingly good in wet and low temps (do not aquaplain on highway at 140 kph at full wet conditions). NVH similar to Bridgestone Potenza Sport. Sadly the wear was horrible, although I assume it was mostly due to a combination of stock (ca. -0,5 deg) camber and track usage.

Nankang AR 1 rated 52% while driving a Mazda MX5
Driving on track for 600 spirited miles
Used as a track-only tire (forced by the regs of the time attack series in which I participate) on clubsport-spec MX-5 NC (200hp/1150kg with driver and fuel). Soft-ish compound - below 15 degrees Celsius requires very little warm-up, above - none needed. Good performance to price ratio, although it's noticeably slower on hot days. Subjective handling is ok - it isn't super edgy at the limit (for a track tire), but also isn't dull and understeery. Very stiff sidewall. On my car it survives ca. 600 track miles, with small but noticeable performance drop-off at ca. 400 miles. The tread might not hint at it, but it's quite ok in wet (for a semislick, of course) - I guess the relative softness of the compound helps. Can be run with absurdly low tire pressures, even below Nankang's recommendations (the lowest I've ran was 1,4 bar cold - first hot lap was sketchy but the following ones were good). The road manners are obviously terrible, but this isn't unexpected with this type of tire.

MRF ZTR rated 85% while driving a Renault Clio RS200
Driving on track for 1000 spirited miles
Bought two sets of these now to use on my Clio for trackdays, the grip and wear rate on these tires are amazing. I managed to get 7 Full trackdays out of the first set and was impressed enough to buy another set.

Bridgestone Potenza Race rated 70% while driving a Honda Civic Type R FK2
Driving on track for 500 spirited miles
I used them mostly on track, a little while on street too. Reason for the short use-time is that the 2 on the front run off of life in 2 trackdays, which is a negative record for me. Used 2 sets of Goodyear F1 Supersport R's before these, they were TW80, these are TW200, however the GY's lasted much longer.

Overall, they kept up very well and I really liked the grip they gave the car but wouldn't buy again because of the high wear rate.

Yokohama Advan Neova AD09 rated 72% while driving a Mazda Mazda Miata
Driving on track for 1000 spirited miles
I went to these after running four sets of R888R, grip is pretty similar, if not slightly better, but these will last a long time. After a recent track day, really cooking these tires, and they are holding up their shape and not rolling over. More testing will come soon, but I can say these are built for endurance in mind. Good for a track day and not wanting to destroy any slicks.

Dunlop Sport Maxx Race 2 rated 91% while driving a Porsche 1993 928 GTS
Driving on mostly country roads for 2500 spirited miles
The N version that came standard with my GT4 RS is on par with the best in dry conditions but I was surprised with the wet grip, better than the Cup 2s I had in my previous GT4. Seems to last longer as well.

Yokohama ADVAN Neova AD08RS rated 95% while driving a Toyota MR2 mk3 Roadster
Driving on track for 5000 average miles
This is a sporty road tire with a track tire pattern, not a track tire. Once this is taken into account, these are very good.
I did quite a few track days with them, and they still have plenty of life left. The wear pattern is even across the tire.
The car feels very balanced, the dry grip is very good, and the wet grip is good as well, quite surprisingly.
These tires are much more suitable for track use than other "standard" UHP tires I've owned in the past and are perfectly suitable for daily use. I hadn't noticed any excessive noise of anything of this sort.

Accelera 651 Sport rated 60% while driving a MINI Cooper S
Driving on mostly country roads for 6300 spirited miles
As with all things each of us has different experiences. I bought these Accelera 651 Sports as the price was great. They went on my Mini Cooper S, 2006. Initially I thought they were very good. I bought them in January 2024 in the cold weather and they performed very well. The DOT put them at November 2023 so was happy there too.

Jump to 6 months later and they started to feel a little spongey. They were wearing quite a bit, I think they are a soft compound so fair enough but I was definitely not getting the handling I first had. Turn-in was slower. Once turned it kind of felt like the car moves a little and then grips. Jump to the next winter and the grip had disappeared to a frightening level in the cold. I get it's a summer tire but it was way better the previous Jan. Very slippy. Especially as I'm FWD. When my MOT came up the following January. Tires 12 months old and about 6300 miles, 14 from DOT I had advisories for the rubber perishing on all 4 tires. On looking myself I could really see it. That's 12 months and done. I won't personally buy these again. Maybe if you're going to the track and want something cheap to wear out in a day.

I've now just put 4 Eagle F1 Ass 6 on so fingers crossed.

Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 rated 89% while driving a BMW 335i
Driving on a combination of roads for 10000 spirited miles
Quite pricey tires, yet very grippy and also confortable once you let a few psi out of them.

Davanti Protoura Race rated 67% while driving a Volkswagen Passat b6 2.0tdi 110 crd r line
Driving on mostly town for 8000 average miles
Tbh.. my scores are purely from how I found them in both wet and dry conditions.. adding the fact these are' dry/summer seasons tires and not your your winter tires.. though I've used them more over this winter than previous years.. based on my score ratings.. the protoura tires are definitely in my opinion dry/track orientated purposeful tires only.. in the slightest of wet weathers at avarage to just above your normal road speeds these tires are not forgiven especially on the uk's poor roads, i'e urban city /built up areas where road condition are obviously more hazardous and dangerous road conditions from buses hgvs etc etc.. these tires will at the slighly above speeds cause both oversteer and understeer if driven mostly obviously the normal road speeds..hence the less traction you get.. my overall opinion is these protoura tires 200's upwards definitely a dry road tire only or dry track tire

Kumho V70a rated 76% while driving a Fiat 500 Abarth
Driving on a combination of roads for 3000 spirited miles
Fitted a set of soft compound v70a's and they have performed really well during motorkhana events. Plenty of grip and stiff side walls for stability. Haven't tried them on track in the wet but have been using them as a daily and have had no issues on rainy days. My only concern would be how quick they wear but that is to be expected for soft compounds. Also cheaper than most of it's contenders.
