Nokian Hakkapeliitta R5

The Nokian Hakkapeliitta R5 is a premium touring Nordic friction winter tire built to deliver maximum security in true winter conditions. It stands out for its exceptional snow traction and reassuring, easy-to-drive handling, backed up by a notably quiet and comfortable ride. Both drivers and independent tests consistently place it among the stronger options for snow-focused performance, with efficiency also a clear highlight. The main compromise is in wet weather, where braking and aquaplaning resistance are less convincing than the class leaders.

Best in the dry, by far the best in the wet, good snow braking and snow handling, good rough ice handling, best comfort levels and low rolling resistance.
Significantly reduced grip on smooth ice, weak curved aquaplaning resistance.
The Nokian Hakkapeliitta R5 would finish in second with a score weighting more towards dry and wet as it was simply in a league of its own in those conditions. Sadly, this dry and wet performance has compromised its winter ability, it was good in snow braking and snow handling, but struggled a little in snow traction, but the real issue was its smooth ice performance in the traction and braking tests were way off the group. Good comfort and a good rolling resistance round out a reasonable result for the R5, but I'd like to see some of that wet grip traded back for ice performance.

Highly Recommended 2025/26 Best Snow Tires Nokian Hakkapeliitta R5
The Nokian Tires Hakkapeliitta R5 is easy to control on ice, offering consistent grip and remaining manageable even when pushed beyond its limits. It also performs well on snow, with excellent lateral grip in extreme situations. On wet asphalt, the steering is imprecise, but its overall behavior remains logical with good rear-end stability. The tire works well on dry asphalt, where its handling is certain, albeit with slightly slow steering.
The Nokian Hakkapeliitta R5 delivers winter grip that's almost as good as the test's best tires, but the car becomes somewhat more unsettled with these tires - the stability isn't quite as good as the leaders. The tire provides nearly the same excellent winter grip as Continental and Goodyear's top Nordic friction offerings, handling snow and reasonably slippery ice well. However, Nokian has always rolled easily in terms of fuel efficiency, though it's no longer the lightest rolling tire in this test. Aquaplaning performance is weak, following the historical pattern where Nokian's Nordic friction tires have struggled in this area for years. The comfort is adequate but not exceptional, with reasonable noise levels but lacking the refinement of the top tires. The slightly more nervous behavior compared to the leaders means the car feels less settled and confident, particularly when pushed. For drivers who prioritize winter grip and fuel efficiency while accepting some compromises in wet weather performance and stability, this remains a solid choice, but it no longer leads the category as Nokian's offerings once did.

One of the best tires for nordic weathers. I felt very safe and confident when using these tires. Drive according to the weather and traffic rhythm. Speed limits and keep your distance when driving. Excellent tires!

Given 78% while driving a Volkswagen (B8) 1.4 TSI (150 Hp) DSG ACT (175/65 R14) on mostly country roads for 8,500 easy going miles
For now the best winter tires I have owned. Fuel consumption matches the summer tires or do better.
Drove 8500km in cold conditions. You notice that the tires are not made for dry asfalt or rain. But they are nordic winter tires...

Went to the Nordkapp in northern Norway 72⁰ north. And on icy conditions the are great. Many times I was surprised how much traction the tires gave!

But there were also a few times that I was surprised I was sliding. It happens during moments there was slush on the road and I was sliding on al four wheels with 65/70km/h. Not ideal, going downhill in a corner.

On a other moment when the road was fully covered with a layer of fresh ice the tires could not handle it either. But I think spike tires on that moment was the only option. The way back we used on the same stretch of road tire chains.

In general the tires gave a surprised amount of grip during the whole trip. But during temperatures around 0 with still snow/slush on the road the tires where not in their element, and you have to take it easy.

About the wear of the tires, I don't really know yet. I used them about 8500km. But I saw on the front tires the inside was a little bit cupped, I don't know if it has to do with the alignment with the car, or with the load of the car, or the normal wear. But that is what I have seen yet.

They are the worst winter tires I have ever owned. This coming from a person who has owned Nolan’s for decades. Loose snow is frightening and I need to replace them even though almost new.

This generally does not match independent test results and others users experiences. We'd suggest checking pressures and alignment or giving them another run in different snow conditions. If they are still bad you should contact Nokian.

Latest Nokian Hakkapeliitta R5 Reviews

Given 94% while driving a Volvo S60 R AWD (225/45 R17) on for 6,200 miles
I’ve used this tire for the current winter season, and it has performed much better than I expected. I live in Sweden in an area with a lot of variation in winter weather – everything from heavy snow to very slippery ice, as well as dry and rainy days.

In dry conditions the tire responds well and provides a smooth driving experience. My previous winter tire experience is mainly with studded tires, and the comfort difference is huge. These feel much smoother and very quiet. I’m using a relatively small size, 195/65R15, which from what I understand is Nokian’s sweet spot. In larger sizes they seem to get outperformed by some competitors in terms of noise.

The main disappointment, although still acceptable compared to my past experiences, is the wet handling. The tire can feel nervous in the wet, and aquaplaning resistance is not great – it doesn’t take much rain or very high speeds before it starts to lose stability. But again, it’s a winter tire, and I’ve had worse experiences, especially with studded tires.

In proper winter conditions the tire really shines. Ice braking is not noticeably worse than my previous studded tires, and the snow performance is outstanding – the best I’ve ever experienced. On icy roads with a layer of snow, the handling is very confidence‑inspiring. Even at fairly high speeds it’s hard to challenge the tire; it may feel a bit nervous at the limit, but the grip is definitely there.

Overall, the winter performance is exceptional. For someone living in an area with harsh winters, the Nokian Hakkapeliitta R5 is definitely a tire worth buying.

Initial Impressions Review
Given 78% while driving a Toyota Venza USA (225/60 R18) on for 3,000 miles
The tires are comfortable and quiet on both dry and snowy roads, have excellent traction in snowy and slushy conditions, but they seem to severely lack smooth ice traction - especially in braking. I live in dry and cold North American/Canadian winter conditions and my experience matches the recent feedback that the compound was changed to improve wet performance at the cost of ice performance. I purchased these tires as dry snowy and icy conditions are common, so those were my first criteria. I've had to change my winter driving habits drastically when it comes to stopping and pretend that I'm using poor performing all seasons. I'm not sure if it's the weight of my hybrid SUV or just the tires, but I expect to lock up and slide through any stop sign when there is smooth ice involved. Overall good tires for the winter except for that one disappointing (and very important) aspect.

Initial Impressions Review
Given 84% while driving a Hyundai elantra (210/55 R16) on a combination of roads for 1,200 average miles
New to the tire for this winter season - that said I am highly satisfied with the purchase comparing its use to our other two cars this winter it is the car chosen for when the roads are challenging. Wear is an N/A as we havent had it long enough. Cold dry grip seems just fine, noise level is elevated but who cares when you feel as secure as one does driving in the snow and wintery conditions. Our other cars travel north and well as to the south of North America (aka Florida) so we'll be looking forward to new all weather tires to compare it against as All weather set vs. Summer/Winter set.

Given 82% while driving a BMW M3 (275/45 R18) on a combination of roads for 1,500 spirited miles
Rear wheel drive BMW. Staggered Wheel set up. 1000mi. Chicago winter. At highway speeds in the dry (we’ll say over 80mph @ 40°f) it’s down right scary. I don’t feel like I get good traction and the car wanders a bit. At wide curves in the dry, the traction control light comes on and then when I straighten out the LSD kicks in and it has a lateral jolt. Oh, and when there’s strong winds… white knuckling it all the way to work. I took the car back to the shop because I thought it might be tire rub but they said everything was clean and then rebalanced. It’s been quite a winter this year-seemingly every winter scenario imaginable So that being said, in city driving with 4-5 in of snow @ -15° to 20°f under 45mph the tires are simply AMAZING! Remember, this is a rear wheel drive, very “torquey” car. Slush and cold rain it handled well. I might be so bold to say the tires handled better at 20° than at 40°f. The only winters I have to compare it with are Pirelli Sotozero 3, which handled great on the highway but not in the slush or snow. I truly wanted to love this tire particularly since they were really hard to come by in my area but on the highway it falls short.

Fantastic on ice and snow. Communicative, responsive, fun and lots of grip. The comfort level on ice and snow is superb. On dry roads the comfort is good but maybe not superb (have been driving quite little on dry roads with R5s)

I live in middle-part of Sweden where the weather can be up and down. from practically rainy roads, to dry and out of nowhere snow&ice roads due to weather changes. I went from Studded tires(been using those for 12years now and wanted to switch up and see how it felt to use studless and am I amazed how far the it come? it's just magnificent, less road noise due to not studded but wow the performance is just unpeccable. They saying wet grip is not that good-okey-ish but for me they have been great, snow & ice is just as we all know .."they are hakka" for a reason.
