The Nokian Hakkapeliitta 10 would have won this test if it were based solely on ice and snow performance, delivering a perfect score for winter road grip. The stud grip is extremely difficult to match, and on the ice track, it feels like the car tenses up when these tires are fitted - grip increases dramatically, giving the driver greater opportunities to easily handle difficult situations in extreme slipperiness. However, this winter supremacy comes at a cost on dry pavement, where it delivers mediocre performance typical of studded tires at their current development level. The comfort is disappointing and only mid-table among the studded tires, letting down an otherwise strong performer. While it brakes and handles superbly on winter surfaces, its aquaplaning resistance is the joint weakest of the studded tires and, as with other studded tires, its road manners lack the refinement of a friction tire. Bought these for northeast winter and 2025/26 was a bear (2023 CX-5). I travel over High Point mountain NJ up and down and Wurtsboro mountain NY up in morn down at end of day daily over 40 miles one way (look them up, not fun). NJ does a great job clearing the roads NY O boy not so much. These were bullet proof unplowed NY roads no problem up the mountains and down I drank my coffee calmly. Held the track on one lane each way country road unplowed while crazy trailer driver flying in from the other way (had me checking my life ins. in my head) but no problem the Hakka's and CX-5 just did their thing despite his stupidity. Never a slip never a slit slide never a wheel spin. My buddies and I refer to them as the beasts, loud in the dry yea couples miles less MPH (2) yup , who cares!
Bought a set of sharp alloy rims for them to boot no tire changes, bad for your tires.My one friend going to take them for 400 USD (a gift after one season) and I am going for the Hakka 01 with new retractable stud tech, we shall see........yes I am a rubber head I have tire problem!
Just bought the Hakkas after needing to replace the Michelin X-ice snow 4 that I been using since 2021. Did my first 100 miles and there is my first impression:
1. Grip on dry and wet asphalt is much worse than with Michelin, but still much better than Sailun or other cheap winter tires.
2. Nokian Hakka 10 has noticeable spike noise while driving and breaking , Michelin x-ice snow 4 you can hear spikes only when breaking.
3. In corners and b road twist you can feel that car is riding on metal more, and that means the tire has less grip and car feel almost wobbly. Definitely the Michelin did the better job for road handling, according and breaking on dry and wet road.
Haven’t had a chance to drive on ice and snow yet ( spring hit early) but will update the review after winter is back again.

However, during snowstorms or ice storms I did not observe the much-touted and praised performance. Not worth the price paid ($1600.00 CAD) These are definitely the last set of Hakkapelica10 tires I'll ever get.

If you can afford a tire that only goes 20k miles, then these are for you. After 20k, get rid of them or you will be slipping around and having handling issues on snow and Ice,
Driving in Finland, I bought a set of these based on the stellar reviews. For 2 seasons it was great. Especially in the snow and on white ice. Black ice performance was ok, but not great. Average in the dry and wet (to be expected).
During the 3rd season the performance declined significantly. I got stuck in downtown Helsinki on a snowy icy patch of tarmac while parking, other cars(regular 2wd) left the same spot even on studless tires without issues. Even the slightest icing / slush on the roads were too much. I lost confidence in the tire, I reported it to Nokian and they took the tires for inspection after the 3rd season. Without doing any tests they sent it back and said it was all ok. Never buying a Nokian again, it seems the lifetime of these tires is 2 seasons, even when there is plenty of tread remaining.

Absolutely the best snow and ice tires i have ever used.
I always want aggressive snow tires in the winter living in the mountains of western Washington no matter what vehicle I drive.
These hakkapeliitta 10 tires amaze me whenever we get snow. My Hyundai Elantra is fwd and sits pretty low to the ground. As long as my tires can touch the ground they really kick ass. Only problem I've ever had was trying to drive in 2 feet of fresh snow before anyone else was driving in it or being plowed. My car was to low for that much snow but i did make it out of driveway and around the block but i didn't dare stop until I got back in my driveway because i was on top of snow and my tires were spinning a bit to keep the momentum. Once some traffic had packed in down a bit i was great to go.
I love love love these tires.
I also bought a brand new set for our 2018 Mazda cx5 awd and Acura Mdx sh-awd. I'm excited and impatiently waiting for snow to put them to the test with our awd vehicle's.
Echoing other people’s reviews, these tires are phenomenal in harsh winter conditions, to the point where it almost feels like driving in summer. If you’re in the market for winter tires that will laugh at demanding conditions, keep you safe and handle as if there’s no ice or snow at all, buy these. Winter driving is a piece of cake with these tires. My hot hatch is again fun to drive for the cold 6 months of the year up here in the north.
The only downsides are the road noise and wet braking. The noise, which, for a studded tire, is not exceptionally worse than average, but it’s still hard to ignore the noise on asphalt. The wet braking on asphalt is not perfect and far from being “bad”; just something to keep in mind. Definitely buying these again, but I don’t know when that will be as the wear has been almost non-existent!
Nokian Hakka 10 is an exceptional tire in the worst winter conditions. Exceptional ice cornering, braking and acceleration. Quietest studded tire I have had to date. Tires still measure at 9/32nds after 10,000 kms of winter use. Only complaint is the tire gives you very little feedback on dry/wet conditions
Here in the states, outlets like Consumer Reports would have us believe that premium studless winter tires have reached parity with studded Nordic winters. At least in the case of the Hakkapeliitta 10, this is absolutely not true.
I've have the chance to directly compare these tires to lightly worn sets of the Bridgestone Blizzak WS90 and the Continental Vikingcontact 7.
In deep snow the difference is significant. But on hard packed snow and ice the Hakkas are massively better.
I can't speak to the dry/wet traction or handling as my tires will spend 90% of their life on dirt roads and snow.
Noise is still a significant problem with the Hakka 10. In my poorly insulated Honda Civic, the constant racket is intrusive at all speeds on pavement.
For this reason, I would not recommend these tires in any case where the car spends most of its time on paved roads.
They are an absolute godsend for anyone who drives a 2wd car through the remote northern parts of the American west.
I will update this review regarding wear at a later date.
