2024 Auto Express Winter Tire Test
5th/7
205/55 R16 • 2024
The Vredestein dropped one position to fifth compared to its 2020 test appearance, though with improved snow performance. Snow braking and traction now placed fourth, up from last position previously. Snow handling finished fifth, less than a second behind the leader, with good response but weak low-speed turn-in. These gains came at the cost of wet and dry performance. The tire fell from first to fourth in dry braking and from second to fifth in wet braking, though margins were small. It placed fifth in both aquaplaning tests and wet handling, despite showing positive steering feel and safe handling balance. Dry handling finished sixth due to lower grip levels. The Vredestein recorded the highest cabin noise but decent rolling resistance scores.

The Vredestein Wintrac tire receives mixed ratings for driving safety. It performs adequately on dry roads, narrowly misses a good rating on wet surfaces, and earns a clear "good" rating on winter roads. On dry surfaces, it lacks precision and requires frequent steering corrections. In wet conditions, it excels in braking and aquaplaning resistance but falls short in handling. The tire performs well on winter roads, offering good traction, excellent handling, and strong performance in icy conditions. However, its environmental assessment is only satisfactory, with a mediocre predicted lifespan. The tire's efficiency is praised for its low fuel consumption and light weight.

I couldn't find much information on these tires online and I have bought it because for my winter tire rims. I had a very limited choice in 215/70 r16 size. Money-wise these were quite close to the premium options like Bridgestone Blizzak but they had better speed index (H which my car manufacturer recommends as opposed to T on Blizzaks and other tires), were more quiet and had better fuel consumption. I've read a handful of reviews before, mostly positive. I had some winter Hankooks before which I have bought with the car but these were almost 8 years old even though they were driven maybe 3000km altogether. The Hankooks were behaving like a jelly on a highway, I was not impressed. There was this feeling that rear tires responded very slowly while changing lanes, maybe that's why it has a T speed index. Suitable maybe for the city but they don't procuce them anymore.
Vredesteins felt actually better than summer Hankooks k415 (225/60 r17) the previous owner left me (please bear in mind these were old tires as well and I'll be replacing them this season). I've used it on snow, in the wet and also on snow/ice mixture on a track and they actually kept up with the premium offerings on higher diameter rims. Absolutely no complaints for now. If you move your rim size to 17 inches you've got much more choice with similar parameters so maybe then it would be a question of price/performance ratio.

Been very pleased with these tires. Give a lot of confidence in winter conditions. Very good on icy ungritted roads . Excellent on motorways in the wet .For the price , can’t recommend them enough

I have driven over 10 000km on them in 2 full winter seasons.
I was positively surprised by great traction and handling on all types
of snow and icy roads. High above average on wet too.
On wet, ABS activates only at very hard braking.
Possible to drive on snow without ABS to interfere during
normal braking in city traffic which is great.
Wear is also reasonable for the fact they were used in spring season
on dry roads for a month or more in 2 seasons total.
They are not providing much feedback at all perhaps very comfortable,
safe tires. I highly recommend them.

So far driven 2 winters on them - bit above 10 000km in total and wear is reasonable
for the fact they were driven or dry roads in the early spring too...
I was positively surprised by the traction on the all kinds of snow and icy roads.
Water braking distances and grip was also really good.
Comfortable, grippy at any condition. ABS was active only on snow
and ice during harder brakings, on wet I could do quite hard braking
without feeling ABS to activate.
I would recommend these as very safe winter tire you can rely on.
