Continental WinterContact TS 870 vs Vredestein Wintrac

Continental's WinterContact TS 870 and Vredestein's Wintrac target the same brief: premium-touring winter safety for everyday passenger cars. Across nine shared professional tests, the Continental consistently finishes on or near the top step, while the Vredestein positions as a competent, value-leaning all-rounder with particular strengths in braking on dry roads and agreeable efficiency.
What stands out here is how small time or distance gaps translate into different real-world margins. The TS 870 repeatedly builds meaningful advantages in wet grip, aquaplaning resistance, snow control, and longevity, while the Wintrac counters with sharper dry-road stops in several tests, low rolling resistance, and a lower purchase price. This comparison clarifies which tire better fits your winter driving pattern and priorities.

While it might look like the Continental WinterContact TS 870 is better than the Vredestein Wintrac purely based on the higher number of test wins, tires are very complicated objects which means where one tire is better than the other can be more important in real world use.

Let's look at how the two tires compare across multiple tire test categories.

Key Strengths

  • Outstanding wet grip and aquaplaning resistance (e.g., +4-22% in aquaplaning metrics)
  • Best-in-class snow performance across braking, traction, and handling
  • Significantly higher mileage and lower abrasion (often +20-45% wear advantage)
  • Balanced, predictable handling with low rolling resistance for a premium winter tire
  • Strong dry braking in multiple tests (often shortest stops)
  • Low rolling resistance aiding fuel efficiency
  • Good overall balance with safe, neutral handling
  • Lower purchase price than premium rivals

Dry Braking

Looking at data from four tire tests, the Vredestein Wintrac was better during four dry braking tests. On average the Vredestein Wintrac stopped the vehicle in 2.76% less distance than the Continental WinterContact TS 870.

Best Review for the Vredestein Wintrac
Given 88% 215/70 R16 on a combination of roads for 3,000 average miles
I couldn't find much information on these tires online and I have bought it because for my winter tire rims. I had a very limited choice in 215/70 r16 size. Money-wise these were quite close to the premium options like Bridgestone Blizzak but they had better speed index (H which my car manufacturer recommends as opposed to T on Blizzaks and other tires), were more quiet and had better fuel consumption. I've read a handful of reviews before, mostly positive. I had some winter Hankooks before which I have bought with the car but these were almost 8 years old even though they were driven maybe... Conclusion

Taken as a whole, the TS 870 dominates the scorecards: 9/9 overall test wins, class-leading wet security (notably curved/straight aquaplaning), consistently shorter snow braking and better traction/handling, and markedly higher mileage (often 20-45% more). These are high-value safety margins that show up in everyday winter driving and on long ownership cycles. The trade-offs are a typically higher price and, in some tests, merely average dry-brake rankings rather than outright best.
The Wintrac is a credible alternative if you prioritize strong dry braking, pleasant steering, low rolling resistance, and a friendlier price. However, it concedes ground where winter tires matter most: wet handling/braking consistency, aquaplaning reserves, and snow control, plus higher wear. If your winters are truly mixed with frequent heavy rain, slush, or sustained snow, choose the Continental. If you drive mainly in cold, mostly dry conditions and want to save upfront while keeping a balanced, predictable feel, the Vredestein makes sense. The practical takeaway: for broad winter security and long-term value, the TS 870 is the safer bet.
Key Differences
  • Overall results: TS 870 wins all nine shared tests; Wintrac has none.
  • Wet security: TS 870 consistently shorter wet stops and notably better aquaplaning (e.g., +12-23% curved).
  • Snow capability: TS 870 leads snow braking/traction/handling by 3-9% in multiple tests.
  • Longevity: TS 870 wear life advantage typically 19-45% with lower abrasion.
  • Dry braking: Wintrac often stops shorter on dry (e.g., −4-5% vs. TS 870 in several tests).
  • Value mix: Wintrac is cheaper upfront; TS 870 offsets with higher mileage and broader safety margins.

Footnote

This page has been developed using tire industry testing best practices. This means we are only comparing tests which have had both tires in the same test.

Why is this important? Tire testing is heavily affected by things like surface grip levels and surface temperature, which means you can only compare values from the same day. During a tire test external condition changes are calculated into the overall results, but it is not possible to calculate this between tire tests performed on different days or at different locations.

As a result you will see other tests on Tire Reviews which feature both the %s and %s, but as they weren't conducted on the same day, the results are not comparable.

Lots of other websites do this sort of tire comparison, Tire Reviews doesn't.
