The Nokian Hakkapeliitta 10 would have won this test if it were based solely on ice and snow performance, delivering a perfect score for winter road grip. The stud grip is extremely difficult to match, and on the ice track, it feels like the car tenses up when these tires are fitted - grip increases dramatically, giving the driver greater opportunities to easily handle difficult situations in extreme slipperiness. However, this winter supremacy comes at a cost on dry pavement, where it delivers mediocre performance typical of studded tires at their current development level. The comfort is disappointing and only mid-table among the studded tires, letting down an otherwise strong performer. While it brakes and handles superbly on winter surfaces, its aquaplaning resistance is the joint weakest of the studded tires and, as with other studded tires, its road manners lack the refinement of a friction tire. For those who drive exclusively on ice and snow roads, this remains the top choice, but its compromises on bare pavement are significant.

Across nine independent winter tests, the Nokian Hakkapeliitta 10 shows an exceptionally consistent pattern: class-leading grip and control on ice (and usually very strong snow performance), but a clear trade-off on wet and mild/asphalt conditions. Overall results are excellent for its studded class, averaging 2.4th and taking multiple wins (1st of 7 in the 2025 Tekniikan Maailma studded class; 1st of 8 in Vi Bilagare 2024; 1st of 8 in Vi Bilagare 2023; 1st of 9 in the 2021 studded class), with testers repeatedly describing it as “excellent on ice”, “dominated winter performance”, and “unbeatable” on winter surfaces (including a perfect 80/80 for ice & snow grip in the 2025 Teknikens Värld studded class ranking).

The exceptions are also repeatable: aquaplaning and wet braking tend to sit in the lower half of studded fields, and some testers note less polished dry/asphalt behavior (imprecise/slow reactions or reduced stability). For example, it placed 7th/8 for straight aquaplaning in Vi Bilagare 2024 (+14.9% from best) and 8th/8 in Vi Bilagare 2023 (+6.8%), while wet braking was 6th/8 (+8.5%) in 2024 and 7th/8 (+7.6%) in 2023. The Nokian Tires Hakkapeliitta 10 performs excellently on icy roads, where its behavior remains predictable in all situations and the steering feel is precise without being overly sharp. On asphalt, however, its performance is not on the same level, feeling imprecise and slow to react in situations requiring quick steering, though it remains controllable without surprises.

Nokian Hakkapeliitta 10 dominated winter performance, particularly strong in corners on both ice and snow. The steering is responsive with an active rear end that helps turning, though this might not suit drivers wanting ultimate stability. Its weaknesses showed on wet roads with longer braking distances and early aquaplaning, plus reduced straight-line stability on dry roads.

The Best Studded / Friction Winter Tires for 2024

The Nokian Hakkapeliitta 10, a studded tire, offered excellent ice and snow grip and improved wet performance compared to previous models. It showed strong stability and performed well in the moose test. However, like most studded tires it had high rolling resistance, though only mid-table in its class, which hurt its fuel efficiency and lowered its overall score. It was also noisier than the non-studded options, as studded tires are.

The Finnish winter specialist scores many points for its high level of grip on ice. It is also the best at handling slippery curves on both snow and ice without losing its course. A lightly oversteering rear end helps to rotate the car around corners. This makes the tire somewhat prone to skidding under pressure, but it remains easy to control at the grip limit. Its willingness to turn continues on asphalt rounds. However, its wet grip lags behind the best, and the steering feel on dry roads is nonlinear in character. Nokian is suitable for those looking for the best possible winter grip on snow and ice and who appreciate the joy of driving on curvy roads. A high baseline performance with peak winter features results in an overall test victory.
