Passenger Car Winter Touring Tires Tire Review Highlights

Triangle Snowlink PL01 rated 84% while driving a Skoda Octavia estate
Driving on a combination of roads for 4240 easy going miles
This is a follow up review to complement my review from November 8, 2024.

I have managed to survive through the winter season and now I have installed summer tires on my car.
The nordic winter this season was not very nordic. It was not very cold and the snow came in big blizzards covering everything and then slowly melting away. Most of the winter season was spent driving on salted wet roads and packed snow-ice covered areas. The occasional blizzards with huge amounts of snow made for some fun driving though.
Even though the conditions were changing heavily, I never felt like the tires are lacking in any performance category. The grip on snow is excellent and the car feels stable. Grip on compacted snow-ice with occasional water lubricant coating, well, it's non-existent for any tire but even then I managed to get up a 10% incline that was completely covered with the aforementioned substance.
The performance on wet and dry tarmac is good at least - I can not say that I went looking for the limits of these tires on tarmac because at legal speeds around town and on highways the limits were nowhere near to be found. 140km/h (which is slightly illegal) on a cold wet highway was also comfortable and tires performed well.
Comfort and fuel consumption are very subjective. I would say the tires were very nice and soft absorbing many of the bumps on the roads. I have a short strip of very badly maintained street on my commute and just this morning, as I installed summer tires yesterday, I felt how bad the street actually was. Winter tires absorbed most of the bumps and felt like I'm rolling on a decent road. It does lead to a duller steering feedback but for the everyday family car, this is not a problem. Fuel economy change is negligible or at least not measurable since cold starts and bad conditions reduce economy and it is not easily determined how much did the tires change.
Wear after 6822km is so minor I thought the tires are brand new. Forgot to take the slide caliper but

All in all, for the price I paid for those tires (240€ per set), they performed flawlessly. My driving style is calm with occasional "let's have fun" moments mixed in. I never felt that there is a "lack of tires" or that I couldn't get past a particularly badly snowed or iced road. Everything just worked.
I recommend to buy if the price is right.

Powertrac SnowStar rated 81% while driving a Vauxhall Astra
Driving on mostly country roads for 6000 average miles
Overall a really decent tire, good grip on wet and dry roads, I have not driven on snow or ice so no comments there. Seem to wear well probably better than sme well known brands. Good value for your money.

Kleber Krisalp HP2 rated 23% while driving a Mazda MX5
Driving on mostly country roads for 0 average miles
Previous owner put these awful tires on the back of the car. I don’t drive fast, so really can’t comment on dry grip, although the odd tire squeal when setting off on a hill. Which I had put down to a light car with rear wheel drive (Mx5) but now think it was due to rock had rubber. Yesterday I got caught in torrential rain on the motorway. No problems in a straight line but on the twisty B roads they were lethal! Driving at about 30mph the back end would wiggle and we span across the road at one time fortunately missing everything.
The car has Hankook Ventus Prime 4 on the front which look like new so I am swapping out the rears for the same. The Klebers are lethal!

Firestone Winterhawk 2 EVO rated 52% while driving a Toyota Auris
Driving on mostly country roads for 15000 average miles
I was very disappointed with this tire from the beginning. The only good thing was tire wear, they were so hard that they hardly lost tread. I´ve replaced them because of poor performance on snow and icy roads. Lots of noice and significant fuel consumption.

Sava Eskimo S3 Plus rated 48% while driving a Kia Motors ceed
Driving on a combination of roads for 25000 average miles
They are on my Kia Ceed 2016 1.6 GDI since brand new. The performance seems to be consistent by the years. (car kept in garage all its life and driven easy till i got it a year ago from my dad) Snow performence is not bad, but oh boy, dry and wet is something. For normal driving conditions it seems to be quite alright. If your driving pace is just about standard. I had several situations, when i had to brake or steer heavily and the response was not the best. Skidding and when breaking, the car just kept going while ABS was going crazy.
So average driving is pretty alright, but cautious driving is advised. Had different car with the same tire size and for example the Pirellis were much more predictable and better on hard brakes on dry and wet roads. Not getting them again. If you are on the budget and you know its weaknesses, it could be fine to get them.
tires had the same performance since new to this day (+-5,5 mm after 35k km of easy driving)

Debica Frigo 2 rated 67% while driving a Ford Fiesta mk7
Driving on a combination of roads for 18000 average miles
Updated review from 2 years ago. After driving 4 winter seasons the tires are still 6mm, the wear is satisfactory. The grip on snow is still amazing. However, the behavior on dry and wet has deteriorated a lot, dynamic starting is very dangerous. I am thinking about changing tires for a more moderate climate. I recommend only for snowy winters or for calm drivers.

Dayton DW510 rated 75% while driving a Alfa Romeo 147

Pretty good for the price. Endured various kinda of driving over different surfaces, decent grip in the dry, very reasonable when wet! Did not test in the snow - don't really get much snow here.

Nexen WinGuard Sport 2 rated 70% while driving a Audi Q5
Driving on mostly town for 3400 easy going miles
Good: dry grip, wet grip, snow grip, comfort
Wear - above 7000 km by 1 mm of tread
Disappointed with tire width: it she should be 235, but actually 210 mm, contact with ground only 195 mm.
Nexen, WTF? Where my 1 inch?
By the way it had rim protector, but it doesn't work on 8 inch wheel, because it 210 mm. I am so angry and disappointed
Do not buy this wheel in 235/55/19

I had the tires fitted to my company car for 3 winters. They were mediocre and wore the exterior belts quite quick.

Antares GRIP 60 ice rated 69% while driving a Dodge ram 1500
Driving on a combination of roads for 5000 spirited miles
Surprisingly decent for the money. I got these from a local shop last February and had them mounted for use this winter. Compared to the Toyo AT3 I ran last winter, the increased ice performance is noticeable. They aren't close to blizzak performance, but at a tax in price of $180.25 per tire with studs vs the blizzak LT at $396 per tire, I can live with that. Living in atlantic Canada, I've had the chance to test these in basically every condition imaginable, and while they aren't winning any awards, I'm also not dead and haven't crashed. I've even taken them into some mild offroading to take my dog into a quarry she loves to play in and they held up well. After 5000km they haven't worn noticeably and aside from 2 studs I ripped out climbing some rocks offroad, they haven't had any stud retention issues whatsoever. If you want a top of the line tire, this isn't it, but they do well enough for the cost that you can do much worse (and trust me, I've seen much worse winter tires for more money)
