Scoring Process
  1. Collect Test Data: Gather results from professional tire tests across multiple publications. Minimum 1 test(s) required.
  2. Normalize Positions: Convert test positions to percentile scores using exponential weighting (factor: 1.2).
  3. Apply Recency Weighting: More recent tests are weighted higher with a decay rate of 0.95.
  4. Incorporate User Reviews: Factor in user review data (minimum 5 reviews). Weight: 15%.
  5. Bayesian Smoothing: Apply Bayesian prior (score: 7, weight: 1.5) to prevent extreme scores with limited data.
  6. Calculate Final Score: Combine all components using normalization factor of 1.1. Max score with limited data: 9.5.

The Toyo Observe GSi-6HP leaves the testers somewhat puzzled by its character and performance. The tread pattern resembles a Nordic friction tire more than a Central European friction design, yet the speed rating indicates Central European intentions. Performance-wise, it delivers a mixture leaning toward the worse end across most categories. The grip level on winter surfaces is inadequate for genuine Nordic conditions, though better than some Central European offerings. On bare pavement, it dramatically underperforms expectations - particularly shocking is the moose test result of just 68 km/h, matching the worst studded tires and far below what a V-rated tire should achieve. This suggests serious stability and grip problems at higher speeds. The tire makes the test car prone to sudden breakaway on wet surfaces without warning, exhibiting low grip and poor balance. Comfort is reasonable, being one of the few positive notes. The overall impression is of a confused tire that doesn't know what it wants to be - neither a proper Nordic friction tire nor a competent Central European offering, instead falling between categories and excelling at neither. The mismatch between the high speed rating and poor high-speed handling is particularly concerning.
18th/20
Stable handling in the snow, short braking distance in the wet, stable and short braking distances in the dry.
Poor ice performance, high rolling resistance, high noise.

Top 3 Toyo OBSERVE GSI 6 HP Reviews

Given 80% while driving a MINI Cooper S (205/45 R17) on a combination of roads for 1,900 spirited miles
After 3000km (1900 miles) of mixed winter wet/dry and surprisingly recently, snow driving, I’m still happy with my decision to go with the Toyo Observe GSI 6 HPs. I was mostly expecting a performance tire suited to the wet, hilly, and sometimes snowy conditions of the west coast, and these tires haven’t let me down. While they aren't as aggressive or responsive as my previous Nokian Hakka R3s (AWD vehicle) in deep snow or extreme conditions, they're much quieter and still provide a great balance of grip, braking, and overall predictability across slush, ice, and fresh snow.

The Toyos have been great on everything from icy hills to twisty backroads and high-speed highway cruising. Their overall performance in mixed speed/road conditions has been impressive! As far as wear goes, after 3000km, I’ve noticed the tread depth has dropped from the original 10mm to 7-8mm in the front and 8-9mm in the rear. While I think this is reasonable (18-20%) given my driving style and road conditions, I’d be curious to see other users’ experiences and tire wear data to see if this is typical for this tire, especially with as my data comes with spirited driving over a 2-month period.

I’ve also been pleasantly surprised by how comfortable these tires are. They’re quieter and more comfortable than my Hakka R3s, even with the stiffer sidewall and higher PSI. The overall ride quality is great for both everyday driving and when pushing the car a bit more. So far in the early mid-life of these tires, the Toyos have been a solid choice, and I’m looking forward to a longer-term update as I continue to drive on them.

Given 77% while driving a MINI Cooper S (205/45 R17) on a combination of roads for 1,050 spirited miles
These were the best available winters on short notice at the time, but I'm glad I gave them a try. Manual FWD turbocharged.

Previously used LingLong GREEN-Max Winter HPs, Blizzak WS80, Hakka R3s in a similar (but wider) size in Ontario snows, but wanted tires more oriented to the wet west coast winters this time around.

No snow yet this season, but these tires are crazy good in the wet. Have hit multiple deep standing puddles mid-lane switch on the highway and the Toyos give me great confidence. Watching the rear footage of my dashcam on the highway is watching a torrent of water getting evacuated out back.

Overall, about 3-4 months in, these tires have been great for that west coast combination of cold dry days, and very cold wet/flooding days. Good road feedback, much quieter than my previous snow-oriented tires in the dry/wet, and comfortable despite the XL / stiffness rating.

Will update review if we get snow, and may also try dropping the pressure a bit for comfort/grip!

Given 44% while driving a Toyota 2019 Avalon (235/40 R19) on mostly motorways for 0 easy going miles
The rubber on the inside tread fell completely apart (on one tire) after about 35,000 miles. Tires were rotated every 5,000 mile on a 2019 Toyota Avalon. No reason for this failure other than POOR quality.

Great tire on some types of car, I've had them on 5 different cars and loved them but learned the hard way they are not suitable for my Ioniq 5, I ate them in 2 winters.

The Observe GSI tire has no equal, there may be studded winter tires that outperform them on ice but from a daily driving POV you cannot beat these. Finally had to recycle mine after over 100,000kms. Will buy another set this winter for sure.

Given 100% while driving a Honda Civic Si Sedan (215/55 R16) on mostly town for 100 average miles
Previously I owed Toyo Garit winter tires (no longer available) and I was absolutely amazed with the winter grip, braking and cornering. in October 2022 I purchased Toyo GSi 6 tires for my Honda civic sedan. The first winter storm in Calgary Canada quickly paid for them. I was able to momentarily brake and then quickly steer clear of a an unexpected vehicle and bus interaction in front of me. Yes, you can always driver more defensively to avoid these type of interactions. This time I wasn't and couldn't. My daughter as a passenger said "how on earth did you just do that! I simply shouted in delight "Toyo GSi 6s Baby!"

Purchased on October 31, 2019 so three winters for a total of 59791 km. They are completely finished after only 3 winters...normal? Install November 1 and removed April 1 each year. I don't have a sporty driving style. (60 years)

Given 79% while driving a Hyundai ix35 (225/60 R17) on a combination of roads for 5,000 spirited miles
Overall good winter tires. Pretty good on dry and wet road at autumn temps taking into account these are winter tires. Slightly blurred "zero" steering position at town speeds. Tires of this size have rim protector which not every tire has and sidewall is moderately stiff. Snow pull is good to excellent. Handling on ice and mixed snow/ice is very stable while feedback is exceptional. You can definetely say when where tires will start to slip. Ice grip is great for friction winter tires. Overall feeling is better than more expensive Nokian Hakkapellitta R2.

Audi A6, 3.2L, Quattro (225/45 R18) on a combination of roads for 100 spirited miles
Snow in Sweden and below 0C, replaced my old worn down studded Hakkapelitta. Must say im impressed by the grip of the tires in snowy conditions so far. A bit noisy in my opinion but performs very well overall. I recommend them.

Given 91% while driving a Volvo V60 T6 AWD (235/50 R17) on a combination of roads for 10,000 spirited miles
I had these tires installed prior to picking up my new(to me) V60. Drove the car from Montreal to Halifax. Initially on dry roads with temperatures below freezing. What first struck was how quiet these tires are. Not just for winter tires but also compared to the all season Continentals I use for summer driving. The next day I drove in blizzard conditions(driving snow on uncleared highway) which eventually turned to slushy(wet snow) roads then finally wet roads. So within 24 hours I was able to test these tires in every winter condition other than hardpacked ice. They performed flawlessly and were confidence inspiring. Very stable, quiet and responsive. Very happy with these tires and would recommend to anyone.

Given 89% while driving a BMW 320D M Sport (225/50 R17 V) on a combination of roads for 6,000 spirited miles
Bought these tires for girlfriends bimmer with 2 sizes down for more comfortable driving in winter conditions. Comparing to Goodyear’s UltraGrip ice 2 on my Lexus toyo’s grips in the same way but they are a lil bit louder and firmer, I think it’s because of speed rating. As for thread life rear wheels lost 1mm of pattern, maybe because I drive it spiritly. Anyway tires for such price is definitely good choice for winter time. Just ordered a pair of Toyo for my Lexus front axle.

Given 100% while driving a (235/45 R18) on a combination of roads for 1,500 spirited miles
These are snow tires, there should be a "Snow Grip" and "Ice Grip" score.
The traction on snowy roads, compact as well as fresh loose snow is excellent, on icy roads it's also very good for a non studded tire. Great acceleration, but more importantly excellent lateral stability while turning and great braking!

Very impressed with these GSi-6 tires, my previous tires were Nokian Hakkapeliitta.

Given 97% while driving a Infiniti 2004 G35 (215/55 R17) on mostly town for 2,000 spirited miles
Best Winter Tires available for sports coupes or sedan! Been using 1 month in CDN winter. Handles like a summer tire on dry pavement in winter temperatures. WHISPER quiet too. When there is snow - traction is 5/5. treadwear on the GSI is amazing. the previous gsi5 model got 100 000km so these should be the same or better. Dont look else where. The siping goes all the way to the bottom too, unlike most winters so they will be good for a long time! no complaints whatsoever
