The full test

The evidence behind the verdict

Auto Bild has opened its 2026 winter tire test with its usual braking qualifier. Fifty winter tires in 245/45 R19, a size fitted to cars such as the BMW 5 Series, Mercedes E-Class and Audi A6, were braked on a wet surface and on snow, and the two stopping distances were added together. Only the 20 tires with the shortest combined distance go through to the full test.

The Pirelli P Zero Winter 2 tops the qualifier, with the shortest wet stop in the field. The Continental WinterContact TS 870 P is second, ahead of the Michelin Pilot Alpin 5 and the Hankook Winter i*cept evo 4. At the other end, the bottom 20 tires were not run on snow at all, and Auto Bild marks the twelve slowest wet stoppers, from the Tourador WinterPro TSU2 down, as not recommended.

The test car was a BMW 5 Series. The full test results for the 20 qualifiers will follow, and the complete qualifying table is in Auto Bild's original article.

Wet

Wet braking from 50 mph split the field widely. The P Zero Winter 2 stopped in 108 feet and the WinterContact TS 870 P in 111 feet, the only two tires to stop in under 115 feet. The Michelin and Hankook followed, and the Kumho WinterCraft WP52+ was sixth on wet, just ahead of the Goodyear UltraGrip Performance 3. The Triangle Snowlink PL02 needed 166 feet, 58 feet further than the Pirelli.

The difference between best and worst was 53.3% (58 ft ≈ 3.9 Car Lengths). From 80 mph, the Triangle Snowlink PL02 would still be travelling at 47 mph when the Pirelli P Zero Winter 2 had stopped.

Residual speed is calculated from the measured braking distances, assuming constant deceleration; it is not a separate measurement.

Snow

Snow braking from 31 mph was much closer. Of the 30 tires that were tested on snow, 29 stopped between 95 feet and 99 feet, with only the Landsail Winter Lander falling outside that at 102 feet. The Vredestein Wintrac Pro+ was the shortest snow stopper, ahead of the Kleber Krisalp HP3, while the qualifier-winning P Zero Winter 2 was only joint 14th on snow. With the snow distances this close, the wet result decided most of the order.

Residual speed is calculated from the measured braking distances, assuming constant deceleration; it is not a separate measurement.

Results

The cut-off for the full test fell at 20th, where the Maxxis Premitra Snow WP6 just made it in. The Linglong Sport Master Winter missed out by a tenth of a meter on the combined distance.
