Performance Analysis

Drawn from 5 tests. Updated October 13, 2026.

Across five independent winter tests, the Barum Polaris 6 consistently stands out as a snow-focused, low-running-cost Central European winter tire: it repeatedly posts front-running snow braking/traction results and is regularly the most efficient and quietest option. It was 1st for snow braking in the 2026 ADAC test (10.0 m) and again 1st in the 2025 Autozurnál test, where it also won snow traction and finished 2nd overall. Efficiency is a major recurring theme: it had the lowest rolling resistance in the 2025 Auto Bild full test (1/22) and was also 1st for fuel consumption in ADAC and 1st for rolling resistance in Autozurnál; testers explicitly called out it as “having the lowest rolling resistance” and “among the most fuel-efficient”. Refinement is another pattern, with 1st for noise in ADAC (69.9 dB) and Autozurnál, plus 4th/22 for noise in Auto Bild.

The consistent caveat is wet and especially dry-road safety margins versus the best tires. Wet braking is repeatedly below the sharp end (e.g. 12/16 in ADAC at +18.8% from best; 12/52 and 8/50 in the two Auto Bild braking qualifiers at ~+15% from best), while aquaplaning can be a clear weakness in some tests (Auto Bild 2025 full test: 20/22 straight aquaplaning and 17/22 curved). The biggest exception to its generally “good enough” road performance is dry braking: it was near the bottom in ADAC (15/16, +9.5% from best) and very weak in Auto Bild 2025 (17/22, +21.7% from best), with ADAC noting “poor precision and a lot of oversteer when changing direction” and concluding it is not recommended despite strong snow/ice ability.

Auto Bild 225/40 R18 gut (Good)

The Barum Polaris 6, as Continental's budget brand, delivers impressive value as a genuine bargain option with the highest fuel-saving potential in the test. Its exceptionally low rolling resistance translates directly to lower fuel consumption, making it economical to run over its lifetime. The tire proves itself safe and reliable on both snow and dry roads, providing confidence-inspiring performance in typical winter conditions without breaking the bank. However, it shows its budget positioning more clearly on wet roads, where overall performance lags slightly behind premium competitors. Despite this, it never falls into the dangerous category, maintaining acceptable safety standards. At approximately €380 per set—the lowest price among quality brand tires in the test—it represents outstanding value for budget-conscious drivers who need a reliable winter tire but can't justify premium pricing. The tire proves that low cost doesn't necessarily mean compromised safety.

The Barum Polaris 6 was an exceptional performer, finishing second in the final overall standings. Its biggest strength was on snow, where it ranked first overall by winning the braking, acceleration, and traction tests and placing second in handling. On dry surfaces, it was rated second-best, largely due to having the lowest rolling resistance and being the quietest tire at both tested speeds. Its performance in wet conditions was also solid, placing fourth in that category with strong results in handling and aquaplaning resistance, showcasing its excellent all-around capabilities for winter driving.
