Following on from the
All Season tire market overview, Auto Bild have published their winter version of the shootout style braking test.
For the winter test, Auto Bild have tested 53 winter tires in 225/45 R17 in wet and snow braking. The two braking distances are combined, and the top twenty tires go through to a full test covering all aspects of a tires performance.
Not for the first time this year, a Bridgestone tire tops the wet braking test, and wins the overall combined braking distance to finish in the top spot. We're not yet sure what Bridgestone have changed recently, but they've made a massive step forward in the wet, and it will be interesting to see if they can hold onto this performance in the full test.
The "best of the rest" during wet braking testing went to three of the newest tires on test, the Michelin Alpin 6, Goodyear Ultragrip Performance+ and the Vredestein Wintrac Pro. The Goodyear and Michelin managed to match the performance in the snow, finishing second and third overall.
As always, the tires at the cheaper end of the spectrum could manage either a reasonable result in the wet, or the snow, but not both, with the worst tire during wet braking taking a huge ten meters further to stop than the best.
