Writing about the Hankook Kinergy 4S2

I bought the Kinergy 4S2 as a winter tire, in central europe we have usually mild winters with mostly wet and slush, so a wet focused all-season seemed like a good idea, and the 4S2 had a good price in my stupid size.
TL;DR: It was, I’m 95% satisfied with the performance
Dry: Well, it’s an all season on a sporty car, and i didn’t drive it in the summer heat, so not much to talk about. The grip is good, it doesn’t soften up too much in highway drive in ~15C (the warmest it seen), the handling isn’t too fun, but communicative. The comfort is good (way better than the OE PZ4 ofc), but it is quite loud @70/140kph (some sort of resonance, it was bad in the first 500km, then got better). It’s slightly better than a full winter, and that was my goal.
Wet: My point with the tire choice was to handle cold (below 5C) wet, and it nailed it. It has absolutely no grip issues in cold wet, even in the usual salted up/slushy 0C winter roads, or deeper water, it feel just like driving in a summer rain. This comes with the compromise, that the wet grip doesn’t get better with warmer (10-15C) temps, it was weird at first, but i guess that’s a design choice, and i like it.
Snow: Now, that we finally got proper winter, i can say that in fresh or slightly packed snow, these feel just like real winter tires, the grip is good, the balance was perfect (even playful). However, as we move from fresh snow to more packed/icy snow or full ice, the grip dropped drastically (it does with any tire, but less with full winters). It was ok-ish for just getting from A to B, but you really felt the lack of sipes.
Wear/fuel use: I didn’t drive too much on them yet, but they seem to handle the agressive suspension/LSD/torque of the I20N well, there is no significant wear (the OE Pirellis died way quicker lol). The fuel use is hard to tell, it dropped a bit vs PZ4s, but i think the new PS5 set going up in spring well be even better.
As conclusion, i love the tires, if i drove in the mountains i’d need real winters, but currently they perfectly fit my sporty-ish mild winter tire needs (CC3S wasn’t yet on the market, and tbh I’m slightly concerned about the low starting tread depth of them). So, defo buy again, or maybe try something else for curiosity, oor 4S3? :D

I put about 14,000 miles on my GR86 OE tires, including 3 hot track weekends. They are about down to the wear bars now, which isn't bad considering how gnarly they looked after each track weekend.
The biggest con with the PS4 for this application was probably the road noise. I know it drives some people nuts. For me it was noticeable but acceptable. The car always handled great on them, and even at the track they did well enough. Very predictable, though they would get pretty greasy feeling. Totally reasonable given the nature of the tire.
The biggest surprise for me was how uniformly and cleanly they wore down despite ~2 degrees negative camber all around. I've had issues with some other summer tires wearing abnormally, with or without camber.
I didn't spend much time in the wet with them, let alone driving hard in the wet. But any time I did, they again did well enough.
I will likely replace them with the PS5.

The tire grips very well on bends, and the car handles very stiffly. Grip on dry surfaces is very good, and slightly worse on wet surfaces.
Tire wear is quite low; after 20,000 km, the tread is about 5 mm thick, which is probably due to the weight of the car.

These tires can factory fitted to my I20N.
The front tires lasted approximately 4500 miles. Not the best but they are classed as a soft compound. Replaced like for like. They have just released the PZ5.

Writing about the Firestone Firehawk Indy 500

Review based on track experience. Replaced P Zeros. 500’s have better grip and feedback but less agility. I tried Michelin 4S but the 500’s felt better than this “super” tire. The 4S lacked grip, feedback, felt mushy, and was slower on track.

I’m very happy with these tires — I think they’re the only model I’ve ever bought more than once. Previously, for comparison, I had the Michelin PS4, which I found to be good only during the first half of their life. After that, their performance dropped off significantly.
These tires have great dry grip. They do need a bit of heat to work well, but this is only really noticeable in winter. I like that they are not easy to overheat and don’t lose performance even on twisty roads as the kilometers add up. The sidewall is stiff, and the steering response is precise.
I can’t comment on wet grip because it hardly ever rains in my area, and when it does, I drive more cautiously.

The biggest POS of a tire I’ve ever had, THREE out of 4 tires had some sort of dip that caused vibration, one so bad at 140kmh that I had to change a “brand new” tire, the other two I kept because it’s kind of tolerable but still pisses me off on a brand-new car. I say “brand new” because after about 1000km of country roads the guy said, “Damn how much have you driven”, I don’t think and hope they will last over 5000km. And it pisses me off because honestly it’s such a good tire on the dry, still haven’t had the chance to test it on the wet. I’ll stick to Michelin for the next set, even if the performance is worse they never fail me.

This is a short update to my initial review (submitted on April 4, 2025). I only submitted a wet grip score this time. Had a few more commutes and a roundtrip to Germany of well over 1,000 kms. On the wet grip, drove on an absolutely flooded German Autobahn (windshield wipers struggled to keep up), and it was steady as you'd like. Lost grip for the first time taking a wet round-about at a irresponsibly high speed (no-one around to hurt but the car). Even then, I was impressed on how long it took to lose grip.
Overall, I have driven on these tires over 2,000 kilometres by now. Very impressed with them. Maybe not the most sport-biased tire available (steering feel, “soft” & silent), but very grippy in both dry & wet, and they inspire loads of confidence. Can recommend to anyone as an everyday ‘sportier’ tire.

My initial impressions of the Hankook Ventus EVO are very positive. At the time of writing, this tire has just launched. Its launch coincided with the previous summer tires (Dunlop Sport Maxx RT2) on my Alfa Romeo Mito QV warranting replacement due to some cracking on the sidewall (Dunlops were coming up on 6 years of age but still would’ve had tread for 1 or 2 summers more). The above, combined with getting a good deal on them, meant I chose to give these Hankooks a try.
The size is a bit of an unusual one, and therefore the price of this set, compared to a set of 225-section width A-brand tires, is quite a bit higher. Of the A-tier brands that offer their latest tire model in the 215-section width tires (not all brands do…), Hankook was by far the best deal for me.
I’ve mounted the tires after work and immediately went for a little evening (cooler temps around 10 °C) back-road blast. The amount of grip these tires have impressed me right away. Compared to the Dunlops I’ve had on before, the Hankook’s compound feels softer and construction a touch more compliant. Therefore, the grip, both directionally and laterally, feels much more impressive. The tire is quieter, and the ride is more comfortable. Braking feels very strong, as well as giving good feedback. If I may nit-pick, the steering response, I do experience as a touch slower. If one drives (close to) the speed limit, I’d doubt this would be of any bother at all.
Although I’ve tried many tires in my life before, I do not have the data bank of Jonathan. I hope he gets to try them soon and share his experiences. Personally, I’d imagine that these tires are amongst some of the best available. I know they’ve really impressed me personally.

Writing about the Pirelli P Zero PZ4

Not sure what Hyundai were thinking making these "Designed for Hyundai" OEM fit. They are harsh and bumpy without extra special handling and feedback so not worth the trade-off imho. They bump and skip on hard take offs even in the dry in a straight line. When lots of turn/close to lock even at 1-2mph they judder and skip (worse when cold) and I've never had a car or tire that's done this before in my 30 years of driving.
Now on to the wear... just over 3000 miles and the fronts are down to about 3-4mm already. In contrast I've had Michelin CCs on my last two cars (a 130bhp Duster and a 200bhp Astra) that both looked much better with 15-20k miles on them. I know the i20N has 200bhp with an LSD but I've not been driving super hard yet as I get used to the car and that's also at least 50% motorway miles. I could almost understand that wear rate if they were phenomenal tires but they just aren't so no way I'm buying them again to replace the OEMs and am already looking for new tires.

Previously, I had mitchelin ps4 frt and rear (good all round tire ) tho suffered bad with aquaplaning with 4mm treat on the frt tires even at 50mph ,chamged the fit tires to Bridgestone potenza sport ; have to say the Bridgestone tires are worst tires I have ever fitted to a car, I was not to bothered about the high wear rate if they performed well ; but the Bridgestone were dreadful when the weather was cold wet or dry constant skipping on acceleration from Standstill or from say 30mph plus on tight corners they roll so bad brushing the side wall even if I increasing tire pressures and only lasted 8k miles Only one good thing they was better at aquaplaning then the ps4s and the only time they gripped ok wet or dry if the day temp was above 14 dregs
As I needed four tires now, not just the front tires looking at all the reviews… thought I try Toyo ps3 or falken fk320 both lower price then premium brands (but are they as good.?)
Wow fitted the Toyos str8 away my car felt so much better these the Toyo tires are better tire in every way. These tires just give so much confidence. The first biggest thing I noticed is the steering response, so much more direct and positive now if i floor it from stand still in the wet . They will spin a little like any fry wheel drive car . But they just start digging in: as with the Bridgestone they just give up .and Just skip and spin more , the toyos work well even when the tires are cold on a cold day still do v well wet and dry
