Hankook Kinergy 4S2

Replaces the Hankook Kinergy 4S

A capable, driver-focused all-season tire with standout dry handling and strong all-weather security, particularly in the wet and against aquaplaning. The main trade-offs are efficiency and refinement, with noticeable noise and consistently poor rolling resistance.

2026 AMS All Season Tire Test - 195/55 R16 P7 of 9

The Hankook Kinergy 4S2 finishes seventh and is the most contradictory tire in the test. It can stop and hold on snow better than anything else here, yet it is the one you would least want to drive quickly on it. Add the highest rolling resistance and the highest noise level of the nine and it becomes hard to recommend over the tires just above it, even at its lower price.

Running Costs
View Test

In 225/45 R17, the Hankook Kinergy 4S2 is projected to cost €25.61 per 1,000 miles to buy and run - about €640 over 25,000 miles - based on the price, wear and rolling resistance measured in the 2026 Auto Zeitung All Season Tire Test.

Tire purchase + fittingExtra fuel vs the most efficient tirecost per 1,000 miles
Assumes a typical car doing 29 mpg (rolling resistance causing 20% of fuel use), fuel at €6.25 per gallon and €70 fitting per set of four. Purchase prices are from the time of the 2026 test; financing costs are excluded.
Rim Protection
None

No rim protector. The sidewall sits flush with the wheel, so a kerb strike goes straight into the rim.

Rim protection changes with tire size. A low profile fitment normally has a more pronounced protector than a taller one, which is why the readings above differ.
Assessed by eye on the tires we tested, in the sizes listed. No manufacturer publishes rim protection as a specification, so treat this as a guide rather than a measurement.

My dilemma is with comfort and whether to go with 205/60/R16 sizing with this tire or instead with 205/55/R16, but a more comfortable tire to begin with, like the Michelin CrossClimate 2, since the pricing is similar.
I suppose the question is: Go tall or go premium? Show less
March 3, 2025
Generally it's not recommended to change tires sizes, unless it's already specified in the vehicles handbook, as it can give you issues with insurance in the EU. I'm also not sure how much a differences 5% would make when compared to switching to a more comfort bias tire.

Show more I live in Belgium, so it only snows once or twice a year in winter. But temperatures are almost always around or below 0°C. I have seen both the 2023 winter tire and all-season tire tests and am a bit torn between choosing which tire would suit me best. Since the performance of the Alpin 5 is almost the same or better than the Kinergy 4S2.
But as said in the all season test, a all season tire could be a better fit than a winter tire in my region.
Is it possible to give advice on which is the best option for me?
(I also plan to use summer tires regardless of whether I buy winter or all-season tires).

I personally believe that an all season tire as a winter tire is often a better fit than a winter tire for regions that don't see a huge amount of snow and ice, but the performances between the two categories is so close either option will be a good result.
Hi, is this a good allseason tire(18inch) for my Tesla Model 3 rwd+ from 2021. How is the noise and wear?
May 19, 2023
Hey! If you can find the correct load rating there's no reason it wouldn't be one of the better all season tires, however any all season tire will struggle with the weight and torque of a model 3 so make sure you're aware of the drawbacks.

I actually have these in my all season test this year on a RWD BMW. Only tested in the snow so far so can't comment for sure but based on last years test they should be great in the dry and wet. Still, a fair bit off a summer tire in the dry.

As long as you can get the correct load rating the non X you'll be fine, but yes in theory the 4S2X will be modified towards carrying higher loads.
Hi. Do the 4S2 tires have rim protectors?
December 6, 2018
Not in the sizes I've seen, but rim protection can vary from size to size so it would be worth contacting Hankook to find out whether the Kinergy 4S2 has rim protection.

Excellent tires for all seasons, this was my first test as I've always used summer/winter tires on all my cars for more safety and longevity. These tires perform very well on dry roads, in corners whether wet or not, but especially great on snow, whether it's recovery, acceleration, or grip (Summit of the Vosges for example or the Belgian Ardennes). I was very surprised despite all my extensive research on tires with a good price-quality ratio. After 46,000 km, I wouldn't try them again on snow as I've far exceeded the winter wear indicator, but there are still 2mm of tread left for summer.

Coming from a set of Bridgestone WeatherPeaks, the dry grip on these tires is leagues better. Honestly, better than some all-season tires that I've driven on. It is fairly easy to tell when you are on the limit of grip, and they maintain stability once you reach the limit. The tires are quite soft, so the steering is mildly vague, but for freeway cruising, they do the job well enough. Wet grip is also great, although I haven't fully tested these tires to the limit in rainy conditions. Road noise is slightly higher than I would like, as is rolling resistance, these tires return worse fuel economy. I have yet to test them in snowy conditions. Considering I have only driven 8000 miles, they are wearing moderately quickly, but plenty of those miles included carving corners and spirited driving. I would expect to get somewhere in the realm of 30-35K miles out of a set. Overall, considering the deal I got on these tires, I would definitely buy them again.

I bought a set of 4 tires. the first years of snow were excellent. They performed best for me on a wet road. Not once did I aquaplan or get wet. I drive slowly because I'm always with the kids, I really lie on the gas. excellent price and quality.

First All Weather tire I've driven on. Used on a VW Jetta almost entirely for city driving.
You'll get maybe 28k miles out of them if you fail to rotate them, probably twice that if you rotate them properly. They are a great fun tire for a light car and provide plenty of traction year round in all weather conditions. They provide stable traction as long as you don't push your car too hard into severe understeer conditions or pretend you are driving an actual winter tire. If you've driven on winter tires previously they simply won't be as good but are infinitely better than all season tires on a fwd car in the snow.
Once the circumferential grooves are gone your ice/snow directional traction reduces significantly and you'll likely notice road noise increases significantly by this point as well.
Don't think I'd use these on an SUV - but maybe the 4S2 X is better since it is desired for SUVs?

Much better for winter driving than the two all(3)-season Continental ContiTouring and Pirelli P4s I've driven on previously.

Got these tires (225/50/R17) roughly 3.5 years ago and it is now coming to the end of its life after 55000+ km here in south-western Germany. I did not really use it in heavy snow or anything, just the light snow and cool temperatures we usually get. These are superb tires. In the dry, in colder weather and in the wet it is absolutely came through. I sometimes took the on-ramp (einfahrt) curves to the autobahn at over 85 kph in a big Mercedes s213 wagon (RWD) and it showed no sign of understeer or oversteer. it just gripped and went. Never once had problems with breaking or aquaplaning or anything like that. Fuel efficiency is also really good (saw no difference to Bridgestone turanza t005 summer tires I had before) and it is mostly quiet. I am sure Michelin/Pirelli/Continental are a bit better in certain areas, but the Hankook 4S2s were at least 25 euros cheaper per corner, so the value is spectacular. I would absolutely buy them again BUT I am very curious to try the Bridgestone Turanza 6 all season which now seem to be almost the same price as these OR the new Hankook ION FlexClimate.

Purchased the 4S2s pitched as 'upper mid-priced' but comparatively good all-year-round performer according to prior reviews. Was temped by the Vredestein Quatrac Pro at only a couple of quid more, but decided that I fancied the 4S2s tread pattern.
The 4S2s feel fine. I'm no boy racer but 630lb ft of torque via 3.0TDI Quattro transmission provides awesome roundabout exits!
So performance for an all season tire appears good. However, ....and this is a BIG however: These boots are doing around 12% less miles to the gallon. Now, over a predicted 28,000miles that equates to around 75 more gallons of diesel. Even at an average £1.50 per liter that means these tires may cost me more than the price of a set of new 4S2s at todays prices...fitted and balanced...over their useable life!
I think that Ill be going back to try Vreds if the motor is still with me in 3 yrs!
My history of tires for this motor was as follows:
Vred Ultrac's (Sessanta and Vorti) and I couldn't fault them as a long lasting summer tire.
I went budget for a set of Summer Nankang AS2+ but they turned out to be just as expensive per mile (lasted 75% of the Vred mileage for 75% of the cost). These also developed worryingly long circumferential splits on all inner sidewalls (thankfully didn't fail but neither the retailer nor manufacturer gave a sh!t about my complaint).

I chose these tires for my "farm vehicle" which gets used only for transporting everything you wouldn't put in your nice car. At about 60€ apiece they were the best compromise between price and quality. Payload often exceeds 400kg and the car sees mud regularly. So far, the Hankooks performed very well both on- and offroad, in dry and wet. We only had snow once, and they performed better than any other all-season tire I ever had (which would be about 6-7 different makes). Winter tires would obviously be better in snow and ice, but since this car only does about 5-7k miles per year, these tires suit it well. So far so good, would certainly buy them again!

I really like these tires for the colder months. I use them as a winter tire and switch to summer tires above 6 degrees C. They are much better than the Michelin Cross Climate fitted to my other car. In the wet they are also better than my summer tire Toyo TR1.That surprised me! I will buy these again unless something better is produced at the same price. They're great value.

Hankook 4S2 tires are effective when new. But in use, they are of very poor quality. Around 15,000 km, the inner treads of the tire become deformed. And this happens every time. I'm on my second set of tires, and the diagnosis is the same. I advise against buying this type of tire; while they may be effective and cheaper than other brands initially, they are much more expensive to run because they need to be replaced frequently.

I use the car for 1) going places 2) drifting. As far as 1) goes, the tires are of course adequate, maybe noisier than average at highway speeds.

As for 2): these are the best "winter" tires for my use case that I've tried. I haven't tired that many, but I can say there are summer tires with (much) softer sidewall. At-limit/beyond-limit handling is pretty great, in the dry and in the wet. In the wet, there's still reasonable sidebite when sliding (that you don't get with bad cheap tires) - progressive breakaway and all that good stuff. Can't say much about snow (well I can say that with 2.5 mm tread remaining, snow grip is bad - but that's probably normal).

Tire wear is not bad, about on par with most summer tires I've tired, and for example much better than winter Bridgestones I've had once. As far as I can tell, the wear is pretty minimal until too much heat gets involved - even with these in the front, some light track driving in 10 minute stints (light for the front tires I mean) results in some accelerated wear. But, now talking about rear tires, stuff like a 30 second drift run is fine. The tires also handle handbrake drags well, they don't chunk/tear/delaminate easily.

The attached photo is just for curiosity, to admire the inner construction and stuff :). This is absolutely not typical (see previous paragraph), that's from a track day where I had delamination issues even with semislicks - it was a cold day, and that day I learned that very cold tires should be brought up to temperature more... slowly and carefully.
