Auto Bild has opened its 2026 all-season tire test with a braking qualifier. Thirty all-season tires in 225/45 R17, a size fitted to compact cars such as the VW Golf, Audi A3, BMW 1 Series and Mercedes A-Class, were braked on wet and dry tarmac, and the two stopping distances were added together. Only the 15 tires with the shortest combined distance go through to the full test on snow, wet and dry roads.
The Bridgestone Turanza All Season 6 tops the qualifier with the shortest dry stop in the field, the fourth year in a row it has headed Auto Bild's all-season qualifier. The Pirelli Cinturato All Season SF3 is second and the Toyo Celsius AS2 third, ahead of the Ceat 4 SeasonDrive X5 and the Goodyear Vector All Season 4, which share fourth on combined distance. The Michelin CrossClimate 3 qualifies in 12th, and the Dunlop All Season 2 takes the last place in the full test.

Recorded test conditions
- Dry Braking
- 62.1 → 0.0 mph
- Wet Braking
- 62.1 → 0.0 mph
The test car was a VW Golf, and both stops were made from 62 mph. Results for the 15 qualifiers will follow when Auto Bild publishes the full test, and the complete qualifying table is in Auto Bild's original article.
Wet
Wet braking spread the field far more than dry braking and decided most of the order. The Toyo Celsius AS2 stopped shortest in 138 feet, ahead of the Vredestein Quatrac Pro 2 and the Bridgestone. That is an unusually strong result for the Toyo, which has been mid-field or lower for wet braking in Auto Bild's earlier tests, including 18th of 35 in the 2023 qualifier in this same size. At the other end, the bottom nine tires all needed more than 171 feet, and the Arivo Carlorful A/S took 204 feet, 66 feet further than the Toyo.

The difference between best and worst was 47.7% (66 ft ≈ 4.5 Car Lengths). From 80 mph, the Arivo Carlorful AS would still be travelling at 45 mph when the Toyo Celsius AS2 had stopped.
Residual speed is calculated from the measured braking distances, assuming constant deceleration; it is not a separate measurement.
Dry
Dry braking was much closer, with all 30 tires stopping between 120 feet and 137 feet. The Bridgestone was shortest, just ahead of the Ceat 4 SeasonDrive X5, which is how the Ceat reached joint fourth with only the joint eighth-best wet stop. The Mastersteel All Weather 2 was fifth on dry but 21st on wet, and finished 19th. Some of the qualifiers were in the second half on dry: the Continental AllSeasonContact 2 was 16th, the Uniroyal AllSeasonExpert 3 23rd and the Dunlop All Season 2 27th, behind six of the nine tires at the bottom of the table.

Residual speed is calculated from the measured braking distances, assuming constant deceleration; it is not a separate measurement.
Results
The cut-off for the full test fell at 15th. The Dunlop All Season 2 and the Cooper All Season both totalled 281 feet, and Auto Bild lists the Dunlop ahead and puts it through, so the Cooper misses out on the same rounded figure. Behind the Giti AllSeason AS2 in 21st there is a gap of almost 20 feet to the Tracmax X-Privilo Trac Saver, and Auto Bild describes the tires at the back of the field as not recommended because of their long wet stops.

Fulda (a german brand) is also missing. Since this one (Fulda Multicontrol) is a C class in the EU label wet braking category, we would understand that if the remaining budget tires of the test belonged to the A or B Class, but it's not the case.
