Best Tires for the Volkswagen Jetta 1.4 TSI

I think ComfortDrive is a misleading name for this tire - it's only moderately comfortable and is actually quite sporty. Wet grip is its best characteristic - from the tests I found it was at the top of the GTAS category in wet handling and posted lateral grip figures competitive with many of the UHP All Season options. It feels very confident in wet conditions with a proportional balance of lateral and longitudinal grip. In both dry and wet conditions this tire has quick steering response, but I would like more steering effort buildup. I find the steering response is a little too quick and feels slightly nervous on center at highway speeds.

This feels like a relatively stiff tire for the category and size, which for comfort does not match well to my VW Jetta Mk7. The main issue is some float on larger bumps like expansion joints, where it feels like the tire is not absorbing enough of the impact. This float went away when I swapped back to my winter tires. The ComfortDrive also transmits more road texture and noise than the Bridgestone Ecopia EP422+ and Turanza T005 I previously had on this car. Another concern is despite being balanced on Road Force equipment there is some smooth road vibration on these tires. I will get them rebalanced and road force checked, but suspect there is a uniformity issue with these tires since none of my previous tires have had similar vibration issues on the same wheels.

I've driven in the snow once on these tires. They have very poor braking traction and struggle with combined braking and turning inputs. Fortunately I have winter tires and did not expect snow traction from these tires. I would definitely not choose the ComfortDrive if I needed to use them in winter.

I would not buy this tire again for this car, it does not seem to be a good match to the Jetta. However, I would consider it for the strong wet grip and responsiveness on a car with a more firmly tuned suspension.

I wanted to try a summer tire on my VW Jetta Mk7 since I run winter tires in winter and was looking for better wet grip than the OE Ecopia EP422+ from my summer set of tires. They delivered on the wet grip I was looking for, especially in acceleration and braking traction. In dry conditions the Turanza T005 has good grip, but it feels like the sidewall is very soft so it is hard to use the peak grip as it is somewhat slow in response. There is not a clear communication of the grip limits through the steering or chassis. The OE Ecopia EP422+ feels more precise in dry conditions. While this is not a fun to drive tire, its strong wet grip and braking traction make it a safe choice for everyday driving.

Comfort is good overall with a very compliant feel and good isolation from coarse surfaces. There is a moderate amount of secondary motion after impacts and a boomy sound quality on impacts. Neither of these flaws are severe enough to be annoying, but they are consistently noticeable compared to the OE Ecopia EP422+ and my Conti VikingContact 7 winter tires.

The tire I purchased turned out to be a Nissan OE specification. I only realized this when one tire got a sidewall slice and the replacement tire came with a different tread pattern with an Audi 'A0' code on the sidewall. I could not find a matching Nissan spec tire still available in the US market, so ended up moving on from these tire prematurely. After 5800 miles they lost 1/32nd tread depth. I'm not rating wear since these were replaced too early to observe any degraded performance.

This is an excellent winter tire for mixed conditions and suits my VW Jetta Mk7 very well. The comfort and excellent grip in wet/slushy conditions are the standout characteristics for this category. The ride is exceptionally well damped with minimal harshness, just as good as the OE tire for this car. Impact noise is very sensitive on this car and thankfully the VikingContact 7 feels and sounds very well isolated. I find many other studless/nordic winter tires have poor wet grip, but the handling character of the VikingContact 7 is consistent and predictable across the range of dry, wet, slush, and snow conditions. There is also good steering feedback and a clear sense of straight ahead for a winter tire. This is a very pleasant and enjoyable tire for daily driving.

Snow and ice grip is excellent as expected for the category. There is useful feel in the steering and chassis, boosting confidence in snow. The VikingContact 7 also recovers quickly when the grip limits are exceeded. This feedback and forgiving character makes this more confident than other winter tires I have used.

After 3000 miles there is minimal wear to report, about 1/32nd lost on the tires that have been on the front axle longer.

The X-Ice Xi3 is a very soft and squirmy feeling tire. The delayed steering response and oscillations when making small steering corrections combine to be constantly annoying on dry and wet roads. Other winter tires have similar or better snow and ice traction without such annoying steering characteristics. Once the tire is loaded through its initial squirm it is stable and predicable at least, but the lack of precision on center and when steering back to center is unsatisfying. Wet grip is also weak - not as horrible as a half worn Blizzak WS80 but very significantly worse than a VikingContact 7.

Comfort is decent, but let down by annoying extra cycles after bumps and lots of impact noise. Tread noise is low, except for a loud sizzle sound on wet roads especially when accelerating.

Snow and ice grip is good, definitely appropriate for the category and the squirmy feeling is reduced in low grip conditions. The snow/ice performance is not exceptional enough to forgive the compromises in steering, wet grip, and comfort.

Wear is the only exceptional characteristic. Mine still had 8/32nds tread depth when I decided to replace these after just under 17k miles on a VW Jetta Mk7.

Comfort is the greatest strength of the Ecopia EP422+ with a compliant feel, excellent damping, and very low rolling noise. There is minor impact boom, but that is the only flaw with this tire's comfort on the Jetta. I have learned with other tires purchased for this car its comfort is a sensitive balance, so the excellent comfort alone makes the Ecopia EP422+ a great match to the car.

Steering response is also good - not too quick but linear and very predictable. Straight ahead tracking is good and compliments the comfortable character. There is nothing sporty about this car and tire combination, but the tire and suspension respond proportionally to each other and provide good cornering confidence. It has enough dry grip for a commuter car on the street, I think more dry grip would simply overwhelm the car's soft suspension tuning and produce more understeer.

Wet grip is a weak point with poor acceleration traction, but acceptable lateral traction. There is enough grip for the car to feel stable and predictable in wet conditions, but the low longitudinal traction is not confidence inspiring. This disappointing wet grip led me to look for alternatives when replacing these Ecopia EP422+ tires, but both options I have tried came with other compromises in steering feel and comfort that I do not think are worth the improved wet grip.

I have winter tires for this car and only had a few experiences unintentionally with snow conditions on these tires. They had notably weak snow traction, but handling was manageable enough to get home safely. I would never choose this tire to use in winter, it is best treated as a 3 season tire and would be quite tiring to drive in the snow on a regular basis.

At 33k miles I had 3-4/32nds left and felt wet grip had become poor enough to justify replacing these tires. Up to 30,000 miles the comfort remained strong, but there was more impact noise and harshness in the final 3000 miles before I replaced these tires. In hindsight however, this degraded comfort level was still better than 2 of the 3 sets of tires I have had on the car after the original Ecopia EP422+. Only the Continental VikingContact 7 has matched the comfort of the Ecopia EP422+. I will most likely get the Ecopia EP422+ again when I am ready for the next set of 3 season tires for the Jetta.

Handling is the worst problem and from my experience emergency maneuvers are chaotic.

When they are new, they are excellent, but after two years and a half and >40k km (profile had ~4mm), the grip on wet roads (only wet) decreased very much. The last road on the wet road was a few days ago when outside was 14-15c.
Before this model, I had the Michelin CrossClimate (XL) and CrossClimate Plus tires on the same car. The Michelin CrossClimate 2 decreased considerably on wet surfaces (2 other people observed this issue with the wet grip).
Previous models were much better on wet grip after 2-3 years.
This week I changed them with Pirreli SF3 XL, but I want to see them after ~2 years and >30k km

I got the Eagle F1 Sport as replacements for the Michelin PS4 tires which were on the car previously. The PS4 were good tires. Very comfortable with good grip. However, I did notice that the compound started to harden and the noise levels increased quite a bit more than normal. Since I was still satisfied with the overall performance of the tires, I had planned on getting the same tires as replacement. However, the prices for the PS4 had increased by a whopping 25%, post Covid. That is when I started to do some research on alternatives and came across the Eagle F1 Sport. The compound is slightly harder, so there is a small sacrifice to ride comfort. However, the big surprise was the feedback and the immediacy of the steering. It almost felt like driving a different car. The dry road grip is a lot higher and gives you the confidence to push the car more enthusiastically into the corners. I am a fairly cautious driver in the wet, so wet road grip has not been tested. Been using the tires for about 10,000 km and tread wear seems normal.
