Scoring Process
  1. Collect Test Data: Gather results from professional tire tests across multiple publications. Minimum 1 test(s) required.
  2. Normalize Positions: Convert test positions to percentile scores using exponential weighting (factor: 1.2).
  3. Apply Recency Weighting: More recent tests are weighted higher with a decay rate of 0.95.
  4. Incorporate User Reviews: Factor in user review data (minimum 5 reviews). Weight: 15%.
  5. Bayesian Smoothing: Apply Bayesian prior (score: 7, weight: 1.5) to prevent extreme scores with limited data.
  6. Calculate Final Score: Combine all components using normalization factor of 1.1. Max score with limited data: 9.5.

Top marks in the dry, low wear.
Weakness in the wet.
The Kunho Ecowing ES31 achieves the best results on dry roads in the field and also shows very good wear behavior. However, its performance in the wet is only rated as satisfactory. This leads to a devaluation of the overall rating - the tire is therefore recommended.

Questions and Answers for the Kumho Ecowing ES31

Ask a question
September 25, 2019

Why do these score just 30% for wear and yet 98% for buy again? I can't find any mention of fast wear in the written reviews.

There's a chance only one of the four reviews left a wear score, skewing the results.

Given 94% while driving a Kia Motors Rio (185/65 R15) on mostly motorways for 28 easy going miles
I drive a KIA RIO 1.200cc MY 2012, the car was bought new with some lousy HANKOOK KINERGY ECO 425 with which I did 65,000 Km and after I brought them twice front and rear. With the new Kumho [although MADE IN CHINA] the surprises followed one another. At first I was impressed by how quiet they are and they continue to be after 28,000 Km. Then I was impressed by the grip on dry roads which had a confidence and a stability even in braking that won you over immediately and continues to win you over. As for wear and tear, they remain brand new [the car is kept in a garage], and in general the roads in Greece are so slippery that the tires do not have much wear. Now let's go to the only black spot which is the rain. Things are not so pleasant there. Especially in heavy rain there is no proper water drainage. It's like they clog their grooves with water and create a film of water between the tire and the road. Worse than the original Hankooks. So in the water you need special attention. In conclusion, I would dare to say that I would gladly buy them again because I liked their price and because they are an honest tire for the money you pay.

Given 74% while driving a Honda Civic Diesel (195/60 R15) on mostly town for 23,000 miles
I drive civic 2005 on city roads in Bulgaria. I’ve been driving 3 summers these kumhos. They are good on the dry roads, fuel efficient too and have a good price. They are good for NORMAL DRIVING and I’m happy with them. Not so good on wet roads.

Given 80% while driving a Hyundai Ioniq (205/55 R16) on mostly town for 5,000 easy going miles
Replace the previous Bridgestone Nextry tire, the ES31 felt safe & capable in both dry and wet scenario, i am an easy driver in an Ioniq 28KWh, ride is good and didn't notice any bad behaviour. Too early to comment on tire wear as i had only done around 5000km in it.

Initial Impressions Review
Given 73% while driving a Mazda 6 (225/45 R17) on for 2,000 miles
Currently fitted to my mazda 6 in Qld Australia. Driven so far in Summer weather and the occasional heavy rain. Tires have never given me any issues in regards to grip in the wet or dry when driven normally or pushed hard. For the price they do the job adequately and the treadwear rating is 400 is high which means if you cover a lot of kms they will definetly last a long time.
Negatives: the sidewall in the tire is quite soft so when changing lanes / swerving side to side you can feel the tires moving. Despite being called an eco tire the rolling resistance is quite high when compared to my previous tires Ecopia Ep300. I've found in highway driving they use 0.4L/100km more on average and about 0.6L/100km more in suburban driving.

Initial Impressions Review
Given 64% while driving a Kia Motors Picanto (175/50 R15) on for 40,000 miles
Great grip in the dry, decent grip in the wet, poor grip when cold & wet.
Could be a great tire but I've never got my money out of them since they have extreme uneven wear.

I've had 2 sets and both were subject to extreme wear on the outer edges of the front tires. This is despite multiple alignment checks from different companies that showed alignment to be spot on.

Other than that they perform well, but I won't be buying them again.

Given 76% while driving a Volkswagen Polo 9N3 4 door (185/65 R14) on a combination of roads for 10,000 easy going miles
I've had the tire on a 80hp 1ton Polo 9n3 from 2009 for roughly 10000 km. The only comparison I have is with a budget and extremely old winter tire.
It handles well on wet surfaces, but I can't really speak about road feel, as the polo's steering is terrible in that regard. I've never felt the tire loosing grip in corners and it gave me great confidence in very wet conditions, though I have to say that wet braking seems a bit bad (but this might be a symptom of the rather skinny tire itself).
Dry driving and fuel economy over all has been great (80km/h 4.9L/100km, 100km/h 5.5L/100km, 130km/h 6.5L/100km), as is the road noise which is more than acceptable. In the dry I would have to say that the car is a bit skittish (new Sachs shocks) so take that as you wish, but that might be, again, the fault of the rather soft suspension the Polo has.

Overall, for the price, I can't say I'm disappointed and I can definitely recommend them, especially if you get a good deal on them, but I'd go ahead and buy them at full price too.

Given 34% while driving a Kia Motors Niro (205/60 R16) on mostly town for 35 easy going miles
Very poor. The steering is imprecise. They're dangerous in the water. They're extremely soft on the sides. They pitch when turning. They should be discontinued and practically banned.

As today, it will be 1.5 year that I have Kumho tires on my hatchback. They are really responsive in wet/dry roads. Even in rain they hold great grip. Within these 35k miles that I drove with them I can say that they are great. I tested them even at great speeds (consistent 160 km/h) on motorway and they are holding like a champ. For the price you will get 100% of your € worth.

Given 84% while driving a Toyota Corolla verso (205/55 R16) on a combination of roads for 7,500 spirited miles
It's very reasonable for the price (€61/tire), the handling I have nothing to complain about, frankly it holds its own despite the large vehicle I have.
On wet roads it holds up but you shouldn't overdo it either (like taking turns extremely quickly).
Concerning the lifespan... it's ok, I've done 12,000km with it and I'm only halfway through the tires.
Consumption and noise, it's very reasonable I feel the difference between these and the norautos that I had before.

PS: people who say that these tires don't hold up, just skill issues (yet I drive an ocean liner).

Given 54% while driving a SEAT Ibiza (185/65 R15) on a combination of roads for 12,000 average miles
- a tire with low fuel consumption and rolling resistance.
- grip on wet ground and especially the brake are very bad
- on dry ground, it meets expectations, but I can't say good

Given 55% while driving a Hyundai i30 (205/55 R16) on mostly town for 4,000 average miles
REALLY BAD in the wet, ok in the dry. I have had i30 cars for the past 12 years. In WET conditions, these are the worst Kumho tires I have experienced... in fact worst tire ever in 30 years of driving. After 2 losses of control today when driving, I am getting them changed this week even though they are still fairly new.

Given 87% while driving a Peugeot 206 1.4 75hp (175/65 R14) on mostly motorways for 3,000 average miles
I bought four of these tires for my 2003 Peugeot 206. The ADAC spoke positively about this tire and reviews on this site about this tire were positive too. Together with the low price of this tire I thought I couldn't go wrong.

And I wasn't wrong! These tires are good! Especially in the dry as the tests confirmed. Very responsive steering, and no under or over steer in sharp corners at all. Very impressed!
When it comes to the wet these tires are great too. Stable and more than enough grip when cornering sharp on wet roads.
Only downside is these tires slip easily when taking an extreme sharp corner from stand still on wet concrete parking lot floors. I hope you know what I mean.

Confort great too! But sometimes a little bit hard on ledges and ridges but nothing serious.
Noise a little bit too much in my opinion especially on rough tarmac but I need to be careful with this claim as it could also be my car lacking proper sound insulation ofc.
Wear? 2.000 km is too early to say something about it.

Will I buy these tires again? I think I will!! Even though these tires are Made in China, they perform very very well. Don't let that be a reason not to buy these guys. Cheers.

Given 69% while driving a Hyundai i30 CRDi (195/65 R15) on a combination of roads for 1,000 average miles
Great tires in the dry. Noticable noise reduction and more comfortable than budget tires. Some unsettled behaviour in the wet during cornering but much improved over the sumitomo tires that were fitted when I bought the car.
