The full test

The evidence behind the verdict

The 2022 Auto Bild SUV tire test has tested ten sets of performance suv winter tires in the popular 225/45 R19 size using a BMW X1, and included a reference summer tire so we can compare the differences.

Test setup & methodology

The test setting, the conditions recorded and how the results contribute to the score.

Recorded test conditions

Recorded test conditions

Dry Braking
62.1 → 0.0 mph
Wet Braking
62.1 → 0.0 mph
Snow Braking
31.1 → 0.0 mph

The overall results closely mirror the 2021 Tire Reviews Performance Winter Tire Test, with the Michelin Pilot Alpin 5 and Continental WinterContact TS870P proving to be the best of the group.

Only one tire was awarded "Not Recommended" by Auto Bild, the Petlas W671. This also matches the Tire Reviews Winter Test from this year, where the cheap Petlas brand tire performed extremely poorly in the wet.

$3.60/gal
Estimates based on typical driving conditions. Rolling resistance accounts for approximately 20% of IC vehicle fuel consumption and 25% of EV energy consumption. Actual savings vary based on driving style, vehicle weight, road conditions, and tire age. For comparative purposes only. Lifetime savings based on a 40,000km / 25,000 mile tread life.
