Treadwear? compare to the old AD08R ?

Unfortunately we've not yet seen any real world tread wear data from the AD08 RS

I’ve bought a 2016 Swift Sport as a fun weekend car. I’m not going to track it though. However, I’m thinking of changing the wheels to 15x7j to reduce unsprung mass and improve handling/feel. Rent4Ring run a fleet of Swifts at the Nurburgring with this size and tire combination. Are these likely to terrify the Mrs if she borrows it to go shopping and it starts raining, though…? In the absence of a Michelin PS4 in 15 inch size, would the PS3 be a better choice, or anything else you would recommend?

I wouldn't send my wife to the shops in the rain on these, especially if it was also cold, read into that what you will. But if it's a fun weekend car will that situation arise?

Quite a few people enjoy the PS3 in that application but it's not going to feel like a track bias tire. Sadly I'm not sure there are many inbetweens in smaller wheel sizes anymore.

Review Summary

Based on 36 user reviews

Drivers report the Yokohama ADVAN Neova AD08RS as a durable, long-lasting sporty road tire that tolerates heat and offers decent dry grip and surprisingly acceptable wet performance for its class, but it is notably less grippy and less track-capable than the old AD08R. Many praise predictability, sidewall strength, and daily usability, while a substantial minority complain of early squeal, reduced dry grip, and lack of feel on track, especially when compared to semi-slick rivals. Noise and ride harshness are mentioned but generally tolerated given the wear and versatility. Overall, it suits mixed road/occasional track users more than those seeking hardcore lap times.

Strengths
 • Long tread life/durability
 • Predictable/linear handling at the limit
 • Good heat tolerance on track
 • Acceptable wet grip for category
 • Strong/stiff sidewalls
 • Quiet/comfortable for a semi-slick (some users)
Areas for Improvement
 • Reduced dry grip vs ad08r and rivals
 • Early squeal and lack of feedback
 • Underwhelming track performance
 • Wet braking and cold/wet grip concerns
 • Harsh/noisy ride (some users)

Given 55% while driving a Lotus Elise (225/45 R17) on track for 200 spirited miles
tires bought for trackdays for my Lotus Elise S1.... I did 10 runs of 10 laps on the Pole Mécanique d'Alès and I am very disappointed... I had the same sensations as with Yoko 701 (road sport) but with a little more endurance. So not semi-slicks like the old Advan 08r!!!
They slide very quickly well before the limit of the car .... depending on the pressure you put (to try to find the right one), they either squeal or they groan!
In short, total disappointment, do not buy for the track... and on the road, the 701 is just as effective and less expensive!

Given 95% while driving a Toyota MR2 mk3 Roadster (215/45 R16) on track for 5,000 average miles
This is a sporty road tire with a track tire pattern, not a track tire. Once this is taken into account, these are very good.
I did quite a few track days with them, and they still have plenty of life left. The wear pattern is even across the tire.
The car feels very balanced, the dry grip is very good, and the wet grip is good as well, quite surprisingly.
These tires are much more suitable for track use than other "standard" UHP tires I've owned in the past and are perfectly suitable for daily use. I hadn't noticed any excessive noise of anything of this sort.

Given 85% while driving a BMW 323ti (225/50 R16) on track for 0 spirited miles
I have been driving the tires on my e36 tracktool for around 12,000km including 8 track days, 10 leisurely laps of the Nordschleife and I have to say that my expectations were absolutely met. I deliberately chose these tires and not direzzas/a052/ar1 because I drove the vehicle to the race track under its own power. Tires are only suitable for rain to a limited extent but in contrast to the alternatives mentioned above they are certainly the best.
The limit is announced nicely, but the tires make you aware of it too early. The transition to the loss of grip is smooth and predictable. However, they are quite sensitive if they exceed their operating temperature.
Pace is below the usual, full-fledged semi-slicks but above a ps4s or ns2r.
Durability is great, I think you could still drive about 7k km in mixed use with it.

Given 80% while driving a Toyota Corolla (195/50 R15) on a combination of roads for 8,000 spirited miles
Like most people here. I came to complain that these set of tires are nowhere near the good old 08R.

However I find myself in love with this. I mostly spirited driving my shitbox with 4-5 trackday session per year. It suit me and my skill level so well. After about 3 trackday session. I still have somewhat 5-6 mm tread left. And i live in a very hot & humid region (avg 30c and maximum 42c max in summer with avg humidity 65-70%). It can tolerate extreme heat on track so well but trade off for a lot of hardcore dry grip lost on track that i get used to get on 08R. Wet grip also improved a bit too when compare to the 08R.

Long story short, it’s decent but not as good as the old 08R. Last longer, harder compound and tolerate the heat more than 08R.

Buy again? For me, Yes. It suit my usage. But if you’re looking for hardcore track performance and living in colder climate. I think A052 is the one to go (for 15” size)

Given 60% while driving a MINI Cooper S (205/45 R17) on a combination of roads for 2 spirited miles
I thought I was buying the AD08R model but when I realised I had bought the RS I did some research and found out that the RS is a totally different tire compound designed to meet EU eco nonsense and is nothing like the old AD08R tire, apart from the tread pattern, which by the way does look really cool. I did manage to get a full refund and keep them as the outlet were advertising them as AD08R. Very misleading from YOKO where one little added S to the tire code made astronomical difference. Yes that's right, these are disappointing. On the road they feel like good quality road tires but as soon as you push them on a track they are useless. Tire squeal starts when you're no where near the limit, grip runs out way to early considering it's supposed to be a track focused tire. It appears to be a very hard compound so they have lasted me ages and have done about 4 trackdays and over 10,000 miles, still got 6mm in the rear and 3mm on the front so wear is very good but they are frustrating on track, however they grip surprising well in the wet for a semi-slick.
Road use in these is fine but pointless as there's just as good tires out there for cheaper. Yoko are obviously cashing in on a classic tire name and hoping people don't notice the S which must stand for Shite.

Anything that has to meet the EU targets of noise, rolling resistance and wet grip is instantly hampered on track. All the good US track tires in the 200tw category are not allowed to be sold in the EU.
Given 65% while driving a MINI R56 Factory John Cooper Works (205/45 R17) on track for 3,000 spirited miles
Came with car when I purchased it.
Running them on a standard suspension setup Mini JCW R56 except tuned to around 270 bhp and has a Quaife LSD, found them to mirror a lot of the people saying the grip was ok and they squeal around fast corners even when warmed up.
On the road a fine tire but can still spin them up in the 1st 3 gears. Plus just back from Brands Hatch and would not buy again, after just a lap or two they just slide on corners I'd like to power out of and should be able to in the dry. A better budget tire would be Federal RS-R's (ran a few sets of these on previous cars) but I'll be looking at R888R's next (ran a few of these also).

Given 69% while driving a SEAT Leon Cupra R 225 (225/40 R18) on mostly country roads for 48,000 spirited miles
I bought the AD08RS for the reason some people hate it. I didn’t just want a UHP tire, but also didn’t want to buy new tires every season. The AD08 RS was practically perfect. My driving profile is spirited but daily driving with around 4-5 track sessions per year.
The wear on these is amazing, I have covered 48000km with the set I have on my FWD Hatchback. While not being as fast as some Direzzas or AR-1s, I felt them very close to the NS-2R on track, and it felt many times better than Michelin Pilot Super Sports.
Hydroplaning was acceptable for such a tread pattern aswell, normal highway speeds were no problem with moderate rain.

The only complaint I have is the noise and stiffness of the sidewall. These tires are kinda loud and have a harsher ride than usual. Still, as someone who likes to drive sporty, I do not regret having these tires at all. I just wish the AD09 would be available in the 225/40 R18 size :D

Given 73% while driving a Nissan R33 GTST 2.5 turbo RWD (255/35 R18) on a combination of roads for 10,000 spirited miles
Been on 6 track day events this year with amazing results in good weather. Still a lot of life in the tires left.
_______________________________________________________________________________________
Also did over 10000km this year on these tires, mountain roads, citys, highways. (road trips) daily driving.

Great tire in dry warm conditions, as soon as its cold or wet you will have problems with grip, even on not so powerful cars.
Braking distance in the rain is really bad, you just slide.
Out of corners you need to expect to oversteer, if you put your foot down to early.

Given 73% while driving a SEAT Leon Cupra R 225 (225/40 R18) on mostly country roads for 19,000 spirited miles
I had this tire for the past 3 years on an FWD Cupra R, and I have to say, I grew to like the tire. Sure, it’s not the classical race-bred semi slick for track use, but it really suited my 70% road and 30% track driving style. The tire lasts for a very long time and is exceptional in the wet for a semi slick. The dry grip is better than the PS4S and the braking performance is great. The ride is a little harsh and the tire is loud. It‘s also not a very playful tire, if you step over the line, you get a snappy response. All in all, a great tire for people who drive on track & road too.

Given 67% while driving a Mazda MX5 (205/55 R16) on mostly country roads for 4,800 spirited miles
I have a MAZDA MX5 NC with OHLINS suspension and YOKOHAMA ADVAN NEOVA RS 205/55/16. I wore them 2 years ago and unfortunately what I read was confirmed.

Before I had a SUBARU IMPREZA WRX STI with BRIDGESTONE RE070 225/45/17 which I was very happy with once I put them on 3 times and had them as a benchmark but….

YOKOHAMA's grip is nothing special for the class. They hold like conventional tires. The frame is average. Neither hard nor soft. They are comfortable and quiet on the journey, but unfortunately when cornering when they slide, they hiss annoyingly. Sometimes they make the car relatively unpredictable, compared to the previous tires I had. I thought something was wrong with the alignment. I did it again which didn't show anything. In fact, I made it less aggressive to make the car less overstear and safe, but again in some cases it has a sudden overstear behavior that surprises and is not controlled, especially when I insist on the gas, while it didn't have it before. I read that others have faced the same issue and that's why I'm reporting it.

I wouldn't buy them again!

Given 54% while driving a Subaru Legacy GT B twin turbo (215/45 R17) on a combination of roads for 30,000 miles
I've used the AD08R, and the AD08RS on the same car; the difference is night and day. The RS variant starts squealing without much effort. They are very underwhelming, they wear well though. Probably because they're such a hard, not even slightly sticky compound. Just purchased some Goodyear Asymmetric 6's to replace them. Maybe they just aren't scrubbed in yet XD

Given 49% while driving a Volkswagen Golf 1.9 Tdi (225/45 R17) on a combination of roads for 3,000 spirited miles
I drove the Advan Neova 8r before and was impressed in every respect. That's why I also bought the rs, the disillusionment was very great. The dry grip is a disaster, the tire squeaks loudly and loses grip completely, even at speeds that I drove on the same day with a cheap winter tire without any loss of grip or noise. Outside temperature about 20 degrees. Even careful running in and higher temperatures did not bring any improvement. The wet grip is a bit better but nothing compared to the predecessor. Especially the feel of the grip level is very bad with this tire. I also added a Conti PremiumContact 6 (normal summer tire) for comparison, this also surpasses the rs by a long way, and that is also measurable in every respect! The test vehicle is a Golf 4 with an optimized chassis, new original sports suspension springs, Bilstein P6 shock absorbers and a complete axle bearing with Powerflex Black Series PU bushings. The tire size is always 225 45 17 . My conclusion not recommended!

Given 89% while driving a Toyota MR2 mk3 Roadster (205/50 R15) on mostly country roads for 4,000 average miles
Really great tires for mid-engine HA, like MR2 W3. Particularly unexpected how quiet they are and in normal rain they are even better than standard road tires. Very comfortable and reliable. No need to warm up above 10°C. No nasty surprises in unexpected situations, because always super grip! ABSOLUTE RECOMMENDATION!!!

Given 83% while driving a Toyota 86 GT (215/45 R17) on a combination of roads for 7,500 average miles
This tire doesn't deserve all the criticism it receives, which is understandable if you compare it directly to its predecessor the AD08R. I find that this tire is an excellent compromise for a sports car for road/track use: these sidewalls are very resistant (worthy of a semi-slick) for your circuit use with very correct wear. I'm already at 4-5 trackdays with it and I must be halfway through the wear on the front axle. The tire is not very noisy/uncomfortable for road use. In the wet, the grip isn't bad at all for a semi-slick and the tire communicates very well on the loss of grip, which is very important. To sum up, there is better in terms of grip for a semi-slick but I find it unbeatable on the compromise, better than a PS4 on dry or equivalent because of its solidity at the sidewalls. The design of this tire is very pretty with its flames..
