2023 ADAC 16 Inch Tire Test P3 of 16

The GOODYEAR UltraGrip 9+ shows minor weaknesses in steering precision and feedback on dry roads but compensates with good safety margins during sudden evasive maneuvers and average braking distances. On wet roads, it performs clearly above average, offering short braking distances and secure, easily controllable handling. In lateral aquaplaning, its performance is rated as good, and it narrowly misses an excellent rating in longitudinal aquaplaning. On winter roads, the UltraGrip 9+ scores above average in braking and slightly above average in traction. While it offers good safety reserves in snow handling, steering could be more precise. In ice braking tests, the UltraGrip 9+ excels with the shortest braking distances. Environmentally, the tire achieves a good rating for its projected lifespan and wear, and it receives the best rating in the test for efficiency.

Strong: Straight Aqua, Curved Aquaplaning, Snow Braking, Ice Braking, Fuel Consumption Winner: Dunlop Winter Sport 5

Performance Analysis

Drawn from 9 tests. Updated October 28, 2026.

The Goodyear UltraGrip 9 Plus has a strong wet- and winter-road record, winning ADAC's 2021 and 2022 tests and finishing third of 16 in 2023. ADAC 2022 particularly recommended it, with its best wet rating. In 2023 it led snow and ice braking, while snow traction was first with Auto Zeitung 2020 and AMS 2021. Efficiency is another recurring strength: fuel consumption was second with ADAC 2023, and rolling resistance second with AMS 2021. Wet handling drew repeated praise, including third of ten with AMS 2021, and ADAC 2023 placed both aquaplaning results second.

Dry stopping and precision are less convincing. Dry braking was 13th of 16 with ADAC 2023 and last of ten with AMS 2021; Auto Bild 2021 found understeer and ranked dry handling 20th of 22. Auto Zeitung 2020's third-place subjective dry-handling score was unusually favorable beside those weaker handling results. Wet braking also varies: AMS 2021's ninth of ten, 15% longer than best, was an unusually weak result beside ADAC's more favorable assessments. AMS found the highest external noise, whereas ADAC 2023 ranked it fifth of 16. The tire's strongest case is therefore wet and winter grip with low fuel use, with more variable dry response, braking and noise.
