I fitted Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 6 tires in 225/45R17 to a Clio 197 on 7.5J wheels. They are supposed to be sporty UHP tires, but I find it surprisingly difficult to judge how much grip they actually have because of the amount of sidewall flex.
The rear feels noticeably less settled during quick direction changes, almost as if the car is floating on the tires. The front also provides less steering feedback than I expected. This is particularly noticeable during motorway lane changes and faster cornering, where the response feels soft and imprecise for a tire in this category.
The 225 width on a 7.5J rim may contribute to some of this, since the tire is relatively wide for the wheel and the sidewall is not as well supported as it would be on a wider rim. However, I would not expect the effect to be anywhere near this noticeable. I have also driven semi-slicks in the same 225/45R17 size on the same 7.5J wheels, and even when cold they felt noticeably more planted, responsive and secure than the Goodyears.
The outright grip may well be good, but the soft response and lack of feedback make it difficult to confidently judge where the limit is.
On previous cars I used Continental PremiumContact 6 and PremiumContact 7 tires, which are more road-focused premium performance/touring summer tires rather than proper UHP tires. Despite that, both impressed me more in terms of steering response and feedback. They felt sharper and more confidence-inspiring, even though they were fitted to slower cars.
For reference, I had the PC6 in 205/55R16 and the PC7 in 215/45R17, so this is not a direct comparison. Even so, I expected the Eagle F1 Asymmetric 6 to feel noticeably sportier than either of them, and so far it does not.
P.S. they get up to temp quick and start picking up road debris such as rock and start throwing them around.
