Continental WinterContact TS 870 P vs Vredestein Wintrac Pro

This head-to-head pits two UHP winter staples against each other: Continental's WinterContact TS 870 P and Vredestein's Wintrac Pro. Across 18 shared professional tests spanning sizes from 17 to 20 inches, the Continental consistently ranks near the top with a strong wet- and snow-focused safety profile and standout efficiency, while the Vredestein leans into value and sporty feel with flashes of excellence on specific surfaces and sizes.

Expect the Continental to set the pace in aquaplaning resistance, wet braking/handling, and rolling resistance (often by meaningful margins), with balanced snow capability and low noise. The Vredestein counters with competitive to strong snow braking and traction in several tests, a generally engaging steering feel, and a notably lower purchase price-yet it shows recurring weaknesses in aquaplaning and rolling resistance.

While it might look like the Continental WinterContact TS 870 P is better than the Vredestein Wintrac Pro purely based on the higher number of test wins, tires are very complicated objects which means where one tire is better than the other can be more important in real world use.

Let's look at how the two tires compare across multiple tire test categories.

Key Strengths

  • Outstanding aquaplaning resistance (curved and straight) and wet safety
  • Consistently low rolling resistance (often best-in-test), EV-friendly
  • Balanced snow grip with short braking and strong traction/handling
  • Low noise and high comfort with stable dry handling
  • Strong value with significantly lower purchase price
  • Sporty, precise handling feel; stable in snow for many tests
  • Occasional top results in wet/dry events and short snow braking
  • Generally good braking on ice/snow in several independent tests

Most drivers rate the Continental WinterContact TS 870 P very highly, praising its outstanding wet grip and braking, strong snow traction, stable high-speed behavior, and quiet, comfortable ride. Many note predictable handling and good wear/longevity, with some EV owners highlighting low noise and rolling resistance. A minority mention softer steering feel and less sharp dry handling, and several point out a high price. One outlier reports poor snow/ice performance, which contrasts with the overwhelmingly positive winter feedback from others.

Vredestein Wintrac Pro Driver Reviews

Most drivers report the Vredestein Wintrac Pro delivers excellent wet and dry grip with confident handling and strong snow performance, often rivaling summer tires for steering feel while remaining quiet and comfortable. A minority note weaknesses on ice and some increased rolling resistance/fuel use, with occasional soft sidewall feel on powerful cars; overall sentiment is strongly positive given high scores and frequent praise for wear and value.

Best Review for the Continental WinterContact TS 870 P
Given 91% 225/45 R17 on a combination of roads for 2,500 spirited miles
Tire size: 225/55 R 17 101V, Car: Audi A6 C7 3.0 TFSI Quattro. I bought these tires after watching Tirereviews winter tire test. After switching from old Michelin Alpin 4, the first thing I've noticed was... silence. The gap was huge. These tires are quieter than my summer tires- Michelin Pilot Sport 4 (245/45 R18 99Y). I've tested them in almost every weather conditions. They are great. The bigest disadvantage is maybe snow grip- good but not exceptional (new winter tires are better in mild climate), but they saved me 2-3 times during winter skidding :). Definitely worh to buy, especially... Continue reading this review using the link below

Best Review for the Vredestein Wintrac Pro
Given 78% 255/35 R19 on mostly country roads for 5,000 spirited miles
Purchased in sizes 225/40 r19y front and 255/35 r19y rear for Jaguar xe awd. Excellent on dry and wet, very good on fresh snow, on ice I don't know. They are silent and with a soft compound. They may not excel in one category, but they are very homogeneous and suitable for all weather conditions. Very stable at high speeds. Honestly I would buy them again.

Conclusion

The data pattern is clear: Continental is the safer all-rounder and the test winner across most scenarios. It delivers shorter wet braking (often 3-11% better), higher aquaplaning reserves (straight and curved), consistently strong snow performance, and class-leading rolling resistance-translating to better efficiency and EV friendliness. Its few trade-offs are a higher price and, in isolated tests, slightly slower steering or mid-pack wet handling, but the aggregate performance is exemplary.

Vredestein's Wintrac Pro is the value play. It can match or beat the field in specific runs (notably some snow braking/traction and certain wet or dry events), offers a sporty, precise feel, and usually costs 15-25% less. However, its moderate aquaplaning resistance and higher rolling resistance make it less confidence-inspiring in heavy rain and less efficient over the long haul. If budget matters and you prioritize a dynamic feel with competent winter grip, it's a solid pick; if you want the most rounded safety and efficiency package, choose the Continental.
Key Differences
  • Overall results: Continental dominates test rankings (17 wins vs. 1)
  • Wet braking/handling: Continental typically 3-11% stronger; Vredestein can lag in precision and distance
  • Aquaplaning: Continental leads decisively (curved wins 14-0), boosting rain safety
  • Rolling resistance: Continental clearly lower (wins 15-0), improving fuel economy/range
  • Snow: Both competent; Vredestein often strong in braking/traction, Continental more consistently balanced
  • Value: Vredestein usually 15-25% cheaper to buy; Continental offers better lifecycle efficiency and wear in most tests

Footnote

This page has been developed using tire industry testing best practices. This means we are only comparing tests which have had both tires in the same test.

Why is this important? Tire testing is heavily affected by things like surface grip levels and surface temperature, which means you can only compare values from the same day. During a tire test external condition changes are calculated into the overall results, but it is not possible to calculate this between tire tests performed on different days or at different locations.

As a result you will see other tests on Tire Reviews which feature both the %s and %s, but as they weren't conducted on the same day, the results are not comparable.

Lots of other websites do this sort of tire comparison, Tire Reviews doesn't.
