BMW 318d M Sport Touring (E91) Tire Review Highlights

Writing about the Goodyear Eagle NCT5 given 79% (225-55-17-W)
Driving on mostly country roads for 12000 spirited miles
I felt confident on rougher country roads in wet conditions. Dry grip was as expected as not really ever on limit of grip.

Absolutely amazing tires, have them on my car for a winter set, cannot fault them. Occasionally "Tram line" but nothing major. I've covered 10k on them and will buy again.

Writing about the Matador MP 47 Hectorra 3 given 77% (235-45-17-W)
Driving on a combination of roads for 1500 average miles
Overall in terms of grip and comfort very good tires for the price, compared to continental sportcontact 5. I have owned matadors before (mp46) and they were really good, so i decided to buy the new model. The sidewalls are maybe a little bit too soft, but the comfort level is high and for me this was important. Mine are produced in romania and after about 4000 kms I am experiencing tire pull, which is the only negative thing I am experiencing to date. Maybe this pull is related to the softer sidewalls. I will see if warranty covers such issues, because i had an alignment and it didn't fix it.

Writing about the Triangle TR968 given 49% (225-45-17-W)
Driving on a combination of roads for 50000 easy going miles
My dealer purchased these Tallon Triangle tires for my BMW 318D Touring E91. My opinion:

Dry Grip: Not so bad, in the roads of Portugal, with dry weather, the tires grip ad adhere to the road quite well, especially on curves;

Wet grip: Completely dangerous!!! Even driving at 40 km/h , with some wet road (not full rain) the car slips away very easily. It is dangerous for you and your family.

Wear: Very good. My tires lasted 50 000 km using normal driving.

I would never recommend buying these tires again, simply because they are dangerous in wet conditions.

Writing about the Bridgestone Potenza RE050A Run Flat given 83% (255-40-17-V)
Driving on a combination of roads for 23000 spirited miles
My last review of these tires was in February 2011, when i put a pair of new tires on my car. That pair are now needing replaced so another review!

Between February and November I have driven 23000 miles from the Outer Hebridees to South Wales and everywhere inbetween in scortching sun shine and in rain of Biblical proportions. The Bridgestones have offered good grip and a decent amount of feedback on unclassified, B roads, A roads and Motorway / dual cariageways. They dont generate too much noise and ride quality is not too bad. They are a decent all round tire.

However i have driven a 3 series BMW fitted with 19" runflats and the ride quality was shockingly poor. Could it be that 40/45 profile is the ideal profile for runflat tires?? Draw you own conclusions!

BUT. . . . They are very sensitive what pressure they are inflated to. 0.1 bar either side of their optimum pressure makes the difference between nice even tire ware and the shoulders being worn to the canvas whilst the rest of the tire still has 5mm of tread.

Unfortunatly they are expensive currently £225 each, but there are still too few alternative manufacturers making tires in the 255/40/17 size so prices are going to remain high!

Summary: A decent all round tire which doesn't excell in one particular area but crucially its not bad in one particular area either.(225/45/17 & 255/40/17), but has to be inflated to suit your individual circumstances. Buy a good pressure gauge and tread depth gauge, check and adjust your tire pressures once a week and you'll be fine

Writing about the Bridgestone Potenza RE050A Run Flat given 73% (255-40-17-V)
Driving on a combination of roads for 20000 spirited miles
The bridgestone runflats fitted to the back of my car (255/40/17) have lasted just over 20000 miles, which isn't too bad considering most of my driving is on twisty A roads and my right foot can be quite heavy.

I found the bridgestones to be generally pretty good in all weathers, they do however lack ultimate grip on wet roads compaired to Uniroyal Rainsport 2 and Goodyear Excellence. They performed better than expected in the snow we had in Central Scotland before Christmas.

Unfortunatly there isn't a great deal of choice in the 255/40/17 size so replacements are very expensive.
