Toyo T1R Reviews - Page 19

Given 37% while driving a Subaru Legacy (245/45 R18 W) on mostly country roads for 30 spirited miles
I think they stink. Here's why.

Where the nose of my legacy used to lock to the road it now oversteers.

Where the car used to feel all of a piece in a long sweeping bend when entering quickly and still accelerating, the back end now catches up with the front in a series of gentle but very unsettling jiggles. I suppose that's the LSD in the back axle helping me out, but on my previous tires I never felt its presence.

Where the suspension used to tell me there was plenty of time before I was near the limit of grip, The proxes squirm. Perhaps this doesn't mean the limit is coming, but who cares it makes you back off anyway.

The web is full of great reviews for these tires, but if you look around there are some very negative reviews too. There are some familiar themes, mostly that the sidewalls flex - and boy can you feel that, it feels like the wheel nuts have been slackened off allowing the car to always have two or three inches of sideways travel just when you least expect it.

So think on before buying. In my case The Toyo's are the only thing between a car whose UK list price is nearly ?30,000 and the road. Next time I will not compromise. My legacy, a UK spec 3.0 six, came with Bridgestone Potenzas and they lasted 23,000 miles - hung on like glue, inspired wet and dry confidence.

Now that car slides, squirms and has a driver that backs off.

Incidentally, the ride is actually firmer too.

I would rate Toyos as a lose/lose. Spend 20% more and get 100% more enjoyment - remember once you have them, you have them for a long time. Don't be seduced by the lower price.

Given 97% while driving a Jaguar XKR (255/45 R18 V) on a combination of roads for 155 spirited miles
The Toyo T1-R's are the best tires I've used on my Jaguar XKR. Now tunesd to 650BHP the Toyo handle the power well. I still use the 245/45-18 on the front but have gone up to 285/40-18 on the rear. Being very progessive and shift the water in the rain they realy give me confidance to stay on the road.

Great tire, can be a little noisy but the best in their price range by far.

Given 57% while driving a Citroën c2 gt (195/45 R16 V) on mostly town for 9,000 average miles
The car came with Continentals on it from the dealer, (after getting them to change 3 of them for being near the markers) after these died, I got these after being reccomended them. Dry Grip, I find is reasonably good on the front, but on the rear not too great, often feels "loose". In the wet this is worse.

Wear was very bad on these about 10000 miles, and when on the markers they were very troubelsome to standing water.

Given 90% while driving a Honda Accord CTDi (225/45 R17 W) on a combination of roads for 50,000 average miles
Fitted a set of Toyo T1R 225/45 94Y tires at 22000 miles after getting horendous uneven wear from Yokaham DB's on rear (orignal) and less than 10k on Michelin Primacy (2nd set). After reading reviews picked Toyo's which were well priced and provided a much quieter drive than previous. Dry performance is excellent as it wet, with tires only really letting go gradually when pushed really hard or on greasy surface. Wear is excellent after 25k and a single rotation wear is virtually even with 3mm at front 5mm at back. For the price and performance I can't see the need to risk a different tire when I need to replace. Try them and enjoy.

Given 77% while driving a MG MGTF (215/40 R16 W) on mostly country roads for 6,000 spirited miles
Changed to the T1-Rs after a long stint on EagleF1 GD2s. The TF seems to really like the T1Rs and are as good a replacement for the Manufactures recommended GD2s. The tires provided shed loads of grip in the dry while maintaining an acceptable amount of grip in the wet even when driving enthusiastically. They reduced cabin noise compared with the F1s and were as comfortable to use. The only downside is that they seem to wear slightly quicker than the F1's but to be honest, the lower cost and higher dry grip negates this! Top tire for the car and will buy again!

Given 86% while driving a Toyota MK2 MR2 Turbo (225/50 R15 V) on a combination of roads for 10 spirited miles
The Toyo T1R's look great and perform very well giving lots of confidence when driving. Dry grip is excellent and you can just push the car hard into the corners without any problem at all. Wet grip also seems very good although can start to slip slightly if you overdo it.
I have found the Toyo's to be very quiet on the road and despite being a soft compound they have lasted very well. 12k miles on the rear of a 240bhp RWD car is quite impressive. The fronts still have loads of tread left.
Would certainly buy these again!

Given 81% while driving a Volkswagen Golf GTI (255/55 R16 W) on a combination of roads for 98,000 spirited miles
These tires replaced some Conti Contact Sports on the front end and IMMEDIATELY, there wasa complete lack of slip-and-slide in the vehicle.

The in-cabin noise decreased significantly, and the feel of the vehicle was improved noticeably around corners and in tight bends.

Dry response was improved and wet reponse was far more positive - in fact, the vehicle felt more "solid and sticky," on the road.

I'm going to get some put on the back end at the end of the month. These tires ROCK.

With no speed cameras I was in driving heaven when I relocated with car from Holland to St Lucia (Caribbean). I had my car fitted with Toyo's 1 month before leaving Holland so they were still more or less brand new when I introduced them to our twisty hilly roads. They were great in both wet and dry and the feedback and progression left me confident enough to switch off traction control....for good. However, 4 months and 4000 miles later (there's only so much you can do on a small island) I noted that my rear tires were worn to thread and the front's were not that far off! Luckily I kept the original set of Bridgstone Potenza's which came with the car factory fitted and had done 17,000kms when I decided to fit the Toyos. I refitted the Bridgstone which were still in good condition and though not as good in the wet lasted for further 5000 miles before I replaced them with BF Goodrich rubber. The Toyo's were great while they lasted....which was not long

Given 86% while driving a Fiat Grande Punto TJet (205/45 R17 W) on mostly country roads for 6,000 spirited miles
compared to the Bridgstone Potenza's, the Toyo's were as good if not better for lot's less!

Given 59% while driving a Renault Clio 172 (205/45 R16 W) on a combination of roads for 10,000 spirited miles
Driving a fwd 182 i am just about to replace these tires after about 10000 miles - they are fine down the centre but totally bald from outer edges to about 2.5 inches in. I've had a few wheelspin moments when pulling away in 1st in the dry but generally they have given me confidence in all weathers to go tearing round the corners. Overall id say good if your happy to replace every year / 8000 miles.

Given 72% while driving a Volkswagen Golf GTI (225/40 R18 W) on a combination of roads for 2,000 spirited miles
If only i had read these reviews before buying these tires i would not have bought them. I definitely won't be buying them again!!!
Driving a Golf 5 gti on south african roads on the motorway and town I find these tires very very very dissapointing especially after reading the reviews on the Toyo website and hearing from people using these with the same car. It may be fine for the average vehicle at normal driving at the speed limits but definitely not for the spirited driver. The response on dry is merely ok and wet conditions leaves you feeling very dissapointed. Although cheaper than bridgestone and Goodyear this is definitley not the cheapest tire. I think if you want to enjoy your car rather spend the extra penny and buy the best. It appears from the reviews on this website that Goodyear F1 asymmetrical would be the better choice of tire for high performance driving. I'm looking forward to wearing the Toyos out and using a real tire. If i had the money now i would replace these immediately.
