2022/23 Tire Reviews Studless Winter Tire Test
4th/9
205/55 R16 • 2022
Very good grip in the snow, the wet and the dry. Dynamic handling in all conditions.
Limited snow braking, average rolling resistance, average aquaplaning resistance.
The Pirelli Ice Zero FR was a fun tire to drive, and well deserved fourth overall. It's only weakness was snow braking, but that was only 3.3% off the best, it excelled in snow handling being the fastest and nicest tire to drive, to had excellent snow traction, it was good on ice, and very good in the wet and dry. I'm recommending the Ice Zero FR as a good all round tire

I live in Russia, Moscow, and it`s my second expirience on non-studded tires. Pirelli ICE ZERO FR is very good at russian winter. Not noise after using studded tires. Good grip on snow and wet.

Used same 4 tires on my previous 2wd and now on my 4wd. Driven alot on snow and ice (Sweden) for three seasons. Only had one minor incident when grip was lost (extremely icy condition with melted water on top during overtake). Beside from this situation I am extremely satisfied with the tires and would recommend them.

Been using Ice Zero FR for about 5000kms in ever changing winter weather in the Baltic states. Driving mostly within city with frequent longer rides on motorways to rural areas with poorly maintained roads. The weather during this winter has been as unstable as it could be. We've had slush with rain and ice underneath it, we've had thick (up to 30-50cm) powder snow, we've had dense compressed and heavy snow as well as thick layer of clear ice on the roads. Zero FR's are behaving excellent in all these conditions, they give me high comfort and great confidence in driving. Grip and handling on wet/slush is incredible, I've never had so much confidence in my RWD car because all my previous tires (various non-premium brands) have made me feel unsafe very early in terms of speed. And I am not pushing the limits, not even close. Owning a dog brings me to some remote places and forests and, 10-15cms of thick, wet snow have not made any problems so far. I'm not going into deeper snow because of clearance. As of clear ice the grip is as it is, but I believe any non-studded tire behaves the same on it. Dry grip is perfect as I had to check it due to a deer in the middle of the road at pitch dark night. The only aquaplaning so far was at a speed between 80-90kmh and it was caused by large puddle. Tires absorb bumps very well, they are quiet and soft.
Have not yet done thread depth measure, therefore I cannot comment on wear.
On the downside I can mention higher consumption.

I've only used these Ice Zero FR's for approximately 3000kms but they have held up incredibly well on my open-diff FWD car in all conditions. I mostly drive in the city where there is not much snowfall and the asphalt is always visible, but have also driven in 6 inches of powder with an ice base layer and so far I have never gotten stuck or needed a push.
