2026 Auto Express Summer Tire Test P7 of 8

The Nokian Powerproof 2 is a competent return rather than a triumphant one. Its deep-water performance is a genuine strength and it is respectable in the dry, but wet braking and wet cornering are the two areas Auto Express weights most heavily and it gave away ground in both. There is a good tire here for drivers in consistently wet climates, but it needs more outright wet grip before it can trouble the front of a field this competitive.

The Nokian Powerproof 2 has a mixed 2026 test record, with low rolling resistance more convincing than its wet-road consistency. It was eleventh of 20 in Auto Bild's summer test, seventh of eight for Auto Express and sixth of ten with a recommended rating from ACE. Auto Bild placed it second for rolling resistance, and ACE reported joint lowest resistance. Dry braking was fourth of eight for Auto Express and ninth of 20 in the Auto Bild full test; tenth of 50 overall in Auto Bild's braking qualifier also puts its stopping performance in a better light than the full-test finish.

Aquaplaning and wet handling change sharply between tests. Auto Express found an unusually strong result, second in both aquaplaning disciplines, contradicting last in curved aquaplaning for Auto Bild and earliest straight-line aquaplaning for ACE. ACE's second-best wet handling was another unusual positive compared with 16th of 20 at Auto Bild and sixth of eight at Auto Express. Wet braking was seventh of eight at Auto Express and 12th of 20 at Auto Bild. ACE also criticised rear-axle support in a lane change. Noise was good in Auto Bild and ACE but poor at Auto Express, so neither quietness nor wet-weather security is a consistent strength.

The Nokian Powerproof 2 also finishes eleventh with strong braking results on both wet and dry surfaces and a competitive rolling resistance figure. Dry handling is good. The overall wet performance package is rated slightly below the front-runners, which holds it back in the standings. Mileage is reasonable and cost-per-km is acceptable.

Its wet safety score of 63 was mid-pack, but within that it showed a strong wet handling result of 17 out of 20 - second-best in the test behind Linglong - credited with good traction coming out of bends. However, its straight-line aquaplaning score of 12 was the lowest in the field after it lost surface contact at just 49.8 mph, the earliest onset recorded. Its dry safety score of 47 was the second-lowest, and in the lane-change test it drew specific criticism for weaker rear-axle support that reduced stability during fast evasive maneuvers - the only tire to receive a negative call-out in that discipline. It partially offset these weaknesses with the joint second-best economy score of 22 out of 30, driven by strong rolling resistance.
