Winter Tire Tests

Total Tests: 583

Most Tested Brand: Michelin (507 Tests)

Most Tested Tire: Dunlop Winter Sport 5 (64 Tests)

While technically this is the second tire test of the 2026 summer tire testing season, I always think of the AutoBild mega test as the true start to the summer tire test season. It's our first opportunity to see how 50 tires available in 245/45 R19 do in a massive dry and wet braking test!

Michelin Pilot Sport 5 Energy - Primary ImageThe Michelin Pilot Sport 5 is a customer favourite - it's test-winning, long-lasting, and one of the best all-round UHP tires you can buy. So adding a low rolling resistance "Energy" version was always going to be tricky. Historically, energy-focused performance tires have meant giving up a noticeable chunk of wet grip. The question is whether Michelin has managed to close that gap.

The data here comes from two test programmes, both commissioned by Michelin. Performance testing was carried out by TÜV SÜD at TRIWO Pferdsfeld in August 2025 (Report Nr. 713379856-S32-01), covering wet braking, dry braking, wet handling, and rolling resistance. Tread wear testing was conducted by DEKRA in Narbonne, France, during September and October 2025 (Report CPA MARK25H). Both used a Tesla Model Y (RWD, 75 kWh, 2,080 kg) and a tire size of 255/40 R20 101Y XL.

Three of the most popular all-terrain tires on the market go head-to-head in a comprehensive on-road, off-road, and winter comparison. Despite sharing the same LT 275/65R18 Load Range E sizing and severe snow rating, the BF Goodrich All-Terrain T/A KO3, Bridgestone Dueler A/T Ascent Enlighten, and Cooper Discoverer Stronghold A/T each target distinctly different buyers — and our testing confirms just how different they really are.

Auto Bild SportsCars published their second all-season tire test in October, evaluating ten tires in the 215/50 R 18 size. Polish automotive publication Motor tested seven all-season tires in size 215/55 R17 for issue 48/2025. The lineup included two premium tires from Michelin and Continental, three mid-segment options from Nokian Tires, Vredestein, and Yokohama, and two budget choices from Polish brand Dębica and Chinese manufacturer Sunny.

The most interesting result is Nokian Tires' new Seasonproof 2 taking overall victory despite being a mid-segment tire competing against premium products. It scored maximum points in wet conditions, winning every wet test category. The testers noted this as evidence that mid-segment tires are now a real threat to premium products in the rankings.

Nokian Seasonproof 2

This test was conducted by TÜV SÜD Product Service GmbH between January and February 2025 (report number 713351940-PM), testing five premium all-season tires in size 205/55 R16 94V XL. The test was commissioned by Nokian Tires as part of their Premium Tire Mark certification for the Seasonproof 2, with the Nokian tire compared against the Bridgestone Turanza All Season 6, Goodyear Vector 4Seasons Gen-3, Michelin CrossClimate 2, and Pirelli Cinturato All Season SF 3. While TÜV SÜD is a fully independent testing organization with a strong reputation for objectivity, it is important to note that this test was requested and paid for by Nokian Tires.
