Published finishing positions, with the strengths and considerations from this test. Owner reviews cover other sizes and driving conditions.

1st

Cooper Discoverer Road Trail AT

+The Cooper Discoverer Road+Trail AT combined strong grip with one of the best road rides in the test. It shared the highest dry cornering grip, set the second fastest wet lap with the second highest wet cornering grip, was second best for ride comfort and shared second place for noise. Tire Rack's drivers found its steering alert and well matched to its grip, and it cleared the emergency lane change almost every time.

−Its braking was good rather than class-leading, fourth in the dry and fifth in the wet. It was in the lower half of the snow handling times, and the drivers found it needed a careful right foot in the snow, with less lateral grip than its straight-line ability suggested.

2nd

Vredestein Pinza AT

+The Vredestein Pinza AT was the most comfortable and the quietest tire in the test, and it backed that up with the third shortest braking distance in both the wet and the dry and the fourth fastest wet lap. Tire Rack's drivers found it composed on the road and effective, if not exciting, through the emergency lane change.

−It sometimes struggled to put power down on the wet track, with a slightly delayed steering response and some rear-end slip. In the snow it was in the bottom four on lap time, even though the drivers found it balanced and easy to control.

3rd

Nitto Terra Grappler G3

+The Nitto Terra Grappler G3 dominated the wet and dry tests. It had the shortest braking distance on both surfaces, the fastest wet lap and the highest wet cornering grip, and it shared the highest dry cornering grip. Tire Rack's drivers rated its steering among the best on the wet track, and it cleared the emergency lane change nearly every time.

−The trade-off came on the road and in the snow. It shared the lowest steering and road handling score and was below average for noise, with the drivers finding the steering loose and the ride fidgety over small bumps. It was also the slowest tire around the snow handling course by a clear margin.

4th

Bridgestone Dueler AT Ascent

+The Bridgestone Dueler AT Ascent had the second shortest wet braking distance and was the fastest tire around the snow handling course, where Tire Rack's drivers found it quick to steer and well balanced. It was also fourth best for noise and in the top half for wet cornering grip.

−Its dry performance was weaker, with mid-field braking, below-average cornering grip and a delayed steering response that meant it failed the emergency lane change more often than it passed. The ride was firm over small, repetitive bumps, and on the wet track the drivers found one axle or the other was always ready to slide.

5th

Falken Wildpeak AT4W

+The Falken Wildpeak AT4W had the second shortest dry braking distance, set the third fastest wet lap, was fourth on wet braking and was fifth quickest around the snow handling course. Tire Rack's drivers described it as balanced and predictable in every condition, it cleared the emergency lane change consistently, and its noise was well blended for an off-road all-terrain tire.

−Its steering and road handling score was in the lower half of the group, with the drivers wanting more urgency from the steering, and it was prone to spinning up under power in the wet and in the snow.

6th

Cooper Discoverer Rugged Trek

+The Cooper Discoverer Rugged Trek was the best-placed rugged all-terrain tire, third quickest around the snow handling course, and its steering felt direct and natural to Tire Rack's drivers on the road. Its dry cornering grip was in the leading group and it completed the emergency lane change almost every time.

−Its wet braking was among the longest in the test. Noise was the other weakness, with the second lowest noise score and the drivers noting a distracting number of distinct tones.

7th

BFGoodrich All Terrain TA KO3

+The BFGoodrich All Terrain TA KO3 had the highest steering and road handling score in the test, with Tire Rack's drivers praising its quick, accurate response on the road.

−Grip was the weakness. It shared the longest dry braking distance, had the lowest dry cornering grip and was in the bottom four for wet braking, wet lap time and wet cornering grip. It never cleared the emergency lane change, and it was second slowest around the snow handling course.

Joint8th

Hankook Dynapro AT2 Xtreme

+The Hankook Dynapro AT2 Xtreme was competitive on dry tarmac, sharing fourth place on dry braking, with dry cornering grip in the leading group. Its wet braking was mid-field, and its ride comfort and noise were around the middle of the test.

−Tire Rack's drivers found it hard work on the wet track, needing early braking and losing grip if asked to steer and brake together, and its wet lap was in the bottom half. It shared the lowest steering and road handling score, with vague on-center feel, and was mid-pack around the snow handling course.

Joint8th

Nitto Recon Grappler AT

+The Nitto Recon Grappler AT was one of the quietest tires in the test, sharing second place for noise and the quietest of the off-road all-terrain tires, and it shared the second highest steering and road handling score. Tire Rack's drivers rated its road manners among the best in the group, even against the on-road tires.

−Wet grip was the worst in the test. It shared the longest wet braking distance, set the slowest wet lap and had the lowest wet cornering grip, with the drivers finding it pushed wide and was hard to control. Its dry braking and cornering grip were also in the bottom four.

10th

Cooper Discoverer Stronghold AT

+The Cooper Discoverer Stronghold AT was second quickest around the snow handling course, where Tire Rack's drivers found its steering commanding and the tire controllable even past the limit. It also shared the second highest steering and road handling score.

−It had the lowest ride comfort and noise scores in the test, with a stiff ride and a loud, layered tone at highway speeds. Its wet and dry grip were middling at best, with braking on both surfaces in the bottom half, and it cleared the emergency lane change only around half the time.

11th

Goodyear Wrangler DuraTrac RT

+The Goodyear Wrangler DuraTrac RT rode reasonably well for a rugged all-terrain tire, with mid-table ride comfort, and Tire Rack's drivers found it predictable on the dry track, where it cleared the emergency lane change most of the time.

−It shared the longest braking distance in both the wet and the dry, and it was second slowest on the wet lap with the second lowest wet cornering grip. The drivers found the rear could turn abruptly unstable in the wet. It was also in the bottom three around the snow handling course and shared the lowest steering and road handling score.

12th

Yokohama Geolandar AT4

+The Yokohama Geolandar AT4 was fourth quickest around the snow handling course and its wet braking was mid-field. Tire Rack's drivers found the ride firm but composed.

−It shared the longest dry braking distance and was in the bottom four for dry cornering grip, and the drivers found its steering sluggish and its wet handling poor, with erratic ABS intervention. It was also one of the noisier and less comfortable tires in the test and shared the lowest steering and road handling score.

The evidence behind the verdict

Tire Rack's 2024 on-road test of all-terrain tires takes twelve tires from three categories (on-road, off-road and rugged all-terrain) and asks how they cope with everyday driving on a 2024 Toyota Tacoma in 265/70 R17. Alongside the road ride and the wet and dry track tests, a later winter round added snow handling. The Cooper Discoverer Road+Trail AT finished first on Tire Rack's overall rating, with one of the best road rides in the test and strong wet grip, ahead of the Vredestein Pinza AT and the Nitto Terra Grappler G3.

The Terra Grappler G3 was the standout on wet and dry tarmac, with the shortest braking on both surfaces and the fastest wet lap, but it was the slowest round the snow course and less refined on the road. The Pinza AT was the most comfortable and the quietest tire in the test. Among the off-road all-terrain tires the Falken WildPeak A/T4W placed highest, while the Nitto Recon Grappler A/T was quiet on the road but had the weakest wet grip of the group. The Yokohama Geolandar A/T4 finished last.

Tire Rack test on-road, off-road and rugged all-terrain tires back to back on the same truck, which is what makes the trade-offs between the categories visible. The order here follows their Total Overall Rating, which combines the road ride with the wet and dry track and leaves out the winter round. Four of the tires were tested in LT sizes: the BFGoodrich KO3, Cooper Discoverer Stronghold AT, Nitto Recon Grappler A/T and Yokohama Geolandar A/T4.
