BMW 640d Tire Review Highlights

Writing about the Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 3 given 56% (245-35-20-)
Driving on a combination of roads for 18000 average miles
This review relates to Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 3 ROF * (BMW) and specifically 245/35/R20. I have had a couple of sets of Eagle F1 Asymmetric 3s over the years (not ROFs) and I have been pleased with them, but this was my first outing fitting a full set of ROF to my BMW640D Coupe (275/30/R20 to the rear) in October 2019. Shortly after fitting them, I retired, so I am only now covering some 6,000 miles a year. In October 2021 after 12,000 miles, the car failed its MOT as the nearside front tire had developed "a bulge, caused by separation or partial failure of its structure". I replaced the tire with a new Eagle F1 Asymmetric 3 ROF *. Less than 12 months later the car developed a "judder", which initially every "expert" put down to an issue with the rear of the car. After extensive investigations (and cost), by 2 reputable wheel specialists and BMW it transpires that the issue relates to the 2 front tires having lost "their integrity" (the alloy wheels were found to be in "remarkably good condition for BMW wheels"). One of the wheel specialists and BMW were able to balance the wheels (with the addition of a significant number of weights at differing points on the inner and outer edges of the wheels) , but this has lasted less than 2 months and the judder has returned with "a vengence", the only option is to replace the tires. I have approached Goodyear, but they have not as yet to acknowledge my email. Amazingly the rear tryes have been fine (down to approx. 4mm after 18,000 miles), apart from the bone jarring and the "skip and jump" every time they hit a bump in the road - but that is no different to the originally fitted Dunlop Sport Maxx!

The major issue with these tires is wear. I am not driving very fast, I ve done almost 12.000km and tires need to be changed.

I have the tires on a 315hp bmw 640d and in 6 months time the wear is unbelievable and I haven’t even driven the car as I liked. So, even though that it is a good tire, I am not intending to change tires every 10.000 miles and spend 1,2K annually. I will try Michelin p4s or new Goodyear asymmetric 5.

Cant really give any scores as dont have them on the car long enough to get a real feel for them!! Car came with Dunlop SP Maxx tires on and always replaced like for like until now. Been driving over 25 years and hardly got a puncture in my life. My car has done 43k and already on the 3rd set of rear tires. Seem to pick up every nail to a point where the tire cant be repaired, now the side wall has gone despite no visible damage to the tire and no damage to the wheel. Last tire only lasted 6k miles and needs to be changed again, still got about 6mm tread left Disappointed this these big time, wont be going back once the rest have worn...or im sure something would happen to them before they wear to a point they need to be changed

Driving on a combination of roads for 1000 average miles
After years of moaning about ROFs, and having spent a great deal of time trying to avoid them, finally took the plunge and put Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 3 ROFs on all 4 corners on my BMW 640D (245/35/20 front, 275/30/20 rears). My decision was primarily driven by a lack of choice in non-ROF in the sizes that I required and having been disappointed in the wear and comfort of the ContiSport Contact 6 (non-ROF) as my last set on the rear. Since the Goodyears have been fitted, I am not sure that I have got the same car back! The 6 series is not the best of cars to determine handling and grip, but the Goodyears are a good as anything else I have had on the car. The real difference is the ride, as the tires just seem to absorb the bumps, where previous tires have been bone crashing and the rears jumping in the corners (both ROF and non-ROF). If there were any downsides, it was that the fronts cost me the best part of an additional £50 per tire over the rears (despite shopping around) and that the Asymmetric 5s (which are supposed to be even better according to Tire Reviews) are not yet available in the sizes I needed.

Just swapped a full set of Bridgestone potenza re050 for these tires on my 640d and am really impressed, they have transformed the car, really quiet, superb wet and dry grip and have taken the harshness out of the ride, would definitely buy again.

I put these tires on my 640D back in November 2016 and as a result of a change in job with less travel and retirement, they are just at the point of needing to be changed (2.2mm). At the time, I was expecting to change out the Dunlop SP SportMax GT 245/35/20 95Y RunFlat on the front, but they are still going "strong" (4mm). Running a mix of tires means that it is difficult to give a fully representative view of the Continentals. My view is that it is a reasonable tire both in the wet and dry, but I have not noticed any material handling changes over the Dunlop, except it doesn't seem to crash as much (being a non-runflat) as the fronts. The wear is a factor having only done 14,000 miles compared to the 21,000 miles done by the replaced Dunlop SP SportMaxs. I was hoping to replace all 4 corners with the Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 5, but unfortunately they don't currently have suitable tire sizes as yet, so I may just have to go for Eagle F1 Asymmetric 3 Runflats (aaaargh!) all round.

Good grip in dry and wet. Predictable handling, very posituve turn-in. Very quiet tires. Too early to tell yet about the wear life.

Writing about the Bridgestone Weather Control A005 given 76% (245-40-19-W)
Driving on a combination of roads for 3000 spirited miles
Bought these as I wanted 'All Weather' tire that had decent dry and wet weather performance. So far mostly driven in wet and dry conditions in colder temperatures. Performance has been very good with plenty of grip especially in the wet.

Wet performance is better than the Goodyear Vector G2 these replaced but the downside is increased noise and a bit of a drone on certain surfaces compared to the G2.

They do work in the snow although not sure how well they'll cope with serious deep snow that we do get in County Durham from time to time. At least there's enough performance for me not to be 'that' BMW driver stuck on a slightly snow covered road. Overall I'm happy with the A005s. Not a cheap tire by any means, especially in the large size needed for this car.

Driving on mostly country roads for 18000 spirited miles
Bald after 18,000 miles is pretty average. The grip is 'OK' average, middle of the road etc. They are a decent enough lower-mid-range tire, but for anyone looking for something more, i would spend a little more. The PS91 is a much much better tire than these. Handling feels a bit vague too.... on the plus side, these look fantastic on the car - the design is great!

Had these on for 20,000 miles, and they are now pretty bald! Must admit these grip the road extremely well, i cant complain at all, and wish they did the bigger size for my car! (BMW 640D). On the plus size, even in icy conditions, the grip is extremely good. On the negative side, they don't look particularly special, and because they grip so well, steering at the front becomes very heavy! If they were more widely available, i'd buy them again

Writing about the Dunlop SP Sport Maxx ROF given 67% (275-30-20-W)
Driving on a combination of roads for 21000 average miles
Let me first say that I understand all the arguments for and against run flat tires, but I simply can't get on with the harsh ride and cost of replacements. I have just done 21,000 miles, being a mix of country, motor and town driving, on 275/30/R20 Dunlop Sport Max GT ROF fitted to the rear of my BMW 640D MSport. At 2.5mm on the rear nearside, the car was telling me I need new tires; bit of wheel spin and tail end is a little happier than it used to be on round-abouts in the wet. The front 245/35/R20 still have 5.5mm. I would not say that I am spirited driver, but given some space I do like to push the car a little. In terms of wear, I would say that the Dunlops are reasonable; I used to get around 20,000 (based on 3 sets) out of a rear set of Eagle F1 Asymmetric 2s 255/30/R19 fitted to a BMW 330D MSport (mapped to 265bhp with 571nm). What I didn't like about the Dunlops was the ride, the jarring of my jaw at every pot hole and the rear end skipping ever time you hit a bump on a bend; just like the ride I used to get with Bridgestone Potenza RE050A ROF that were fitted originally to the 330D. So you would think the obvious choice of replacement tires for the 640D, given my history, was the new Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 3, but disappointingly neither the 275/30/20 or the 245/35/20 are available except as a "run flat" - aaaaaargh! Instead I have just fitted the new Continental Sport Contact 6; TireReviews video helped enormously with the choice (you don't get so much feel in a 640D, so went on the basis of slightly better grip of the Continental over the Michelin) and CAMSKILL sealed it with a very competitive price for the Continentals. I was tempted to replace all 4 corners, but there some reviews of the Contact 6 suggesting that they do not wear particularly well (on that basis I may as well get the remaining wear out of the front and then replace all 4 at a later date). I have only just fitted the Contact 6, so a review on them will follow in a month or two.
