Continental AllSeasonContact vs Hankook Kinergy 4S2

This head-to-head pits two proven all-season touring tires against each other: Continental's AllSeasonContact and Hankook's Kinergy 4S2. Across 19 shared tests, both consistently score well, but they go about it differently. The Continental majors on efficiency, aquaplaning safety and snow confidence, while the Hankook leans into sharp braking and lively handling in the dry and wet at a lower price point.

Recent tests underscore this split. In 2024 (235/55 R17), Continental placed 4th with standout straight-line aquaplaning (+9% vs Hankook) and class-leading rolling resistance, while Hankook finished 8th but delivered shorter dry and wet stops, lower noise and a keener price. Earlier benchmarks repeatedly show Hankook braking shorter on dry and wet roads, whereas Continental often counters with better aquaplaning reserves, lower fuel use and stronger snow balance.

Test Results

Independent comparison tire tests are the best source of data to get tire information from, and the good news is there have been nineteen tests which compare both tires directly!

While it might look like the Continental AllSeasonContact is better than the Hankook Kinergy 4S2 purely based on the higher number of test wins, tires are very complicated objects which means where one tire is better than the other can be more important in real world use.

Let's look at how the two tires compare across multiple tire test categories.

Key Strengths

  • Excellent aquaplaning resistance and wet security (notably strong straight aquaplaning results)
  • Low rolling resistance and lower fuel consumption across tests
  • Consistently competent on snow with balanced braking/handling
  • Often longer wear/mileage potential and stable, predictable behaviour
  • Short dry and wet braking with confident handling feel
  • Competitive wet performance including strong handling and often top aquaplaning in some tests
  • Lower purchase price and good overall value
  • Quiet ride with balanced comfort in many assessments

Real World Driver Reviews

Continental AllSeasonContact Driver Reviews

Continental AllSeasonContact is widely praised for excellent wet and snow grip, low cabin noise, and improved comfort, with many noting balanced, predictable handling and solid wear for an all-season. Dry grip is adequate for normal driving but can feel mushy or understeery in hot weather, and a minority report faster wear in heat and reduced wet traction as the tire ages. Overall sentiment is strongly positive given the high number of high-scoring reviews.

Hankook Kinergy 4S2 Driver Reviews

Across 60 reviews, the Hankook Kinergy 4S2 is generally seen as a strong-value all-season tire with standout wet-road confidence and dependable year-round grip for normal driving. Many drivers report reassuring performance in cold rain and acceptable snow capability for an all-season, along with a comfortable ride and good overall balance. The most recurring drawbacks are noticeable road noise (often a hum/whine at motorway speeds), a softer/less precise handling feel when pushed, and mixed reports on longevity with several users experiencing faster wear or wet-grip drop-off as tread gets lower.

Best Review for the Continental AllSeasonContact
Given 90% 225/45 R17 on mostly country roads for 190 spirited miles
Initially tested on very wet and slushy country roads and additionally on 5-10 cm compacted snow in the mountains. Tires appeared to perform as well in these conditions as my full winter tires (Nokian WR D4). Dry braking performance in the 0-8 degree range seems very good but fast cornering and general dry handling was lacking a little to my summer Pirelli's when the temperatures were nearer 8 degrees. Still sufficient dry handling for all but the most spirited of drives I would say. Early impressions are good, more winter and dry testing needed but the wet performance has been exemplary.... Conclusion

If you prioritise all-weather safety margins, efficiency and winter assurance, the Continental AllSeasonContact is the steadier pick: repeatedly low rolling resistance, strong aquaplaning resistance, and reliably good snow performance, with generally longer tread life. If you value crisp road manners and short stopping distances in everyday mild climates, the Hankook Kinergy 4S2 is the more engaging and cost-effective choice, frequently leading in dry/wet braking and often pricing 15-30% lower.

For predominantly urban/suburban driving with frequent rain and occasional snow, Continental's added aquaplaning headroom and efficiency pay off over time. For drivers who want maximum bite in emergency stops and a lower upfront cost, Hankook delivers excellent real-world value. The practical takeaway: choose Continental for year-round security and economy; choose Hankook for budget-savvy, grippy performance in milder winters.
Key Differences
  • Braking bias: Hankook repeatedly stops shorter in dry and wet; Continental can trail on dry stops.
  • Aquaplaning: Continental generally has higher straight-line reserves; Hankook varies by test.
  • Efficiency: Continental's rolling resistance is consistently lower, aiding fuel economy.
  • Winter balance: Continental tends to be steadier on snow; Hankook ranges from good to average traction.
  • Noise/comfort: Hankook often runs quieter; Continental can be noisier but more composed in poor conditions.
  • Value and wear: Hankook is cheaper upfront; Continental frequently shows better longevity, improving lifetime value.

Footnote

This page has been developed using tire industry testing best practices. This means we are only comparing tests which have had both tires in the same test.

Why is this important? Tire testing is heavily affected by things like surface grip levels and surface temperature, which means you can only compare values from the same day. During a tire test external condition changes are calculated into the overall results, but it is not possible to calculate this between tire tests performed on different days or at different locations.

As a result you will see other tests on Tire Reviews which feature both the %s and %s, but as they weren't conducted on the same day, the results are not comparable.

Lots of other websites do this sort of tire comparison, Tire Reviews doesn't.
