Goodyear UltraGrip Performance 3 vs Maxxis Premitra Snow WP6

This head-to-head pits the ultra-high-performance Goodyear UltraGrip Performance 3 against the value-focused, premium-touring Maxxis Premitra Snow WP6 across seven shared winter tests from 2023-2025. Tested from 16-19 inches and across dry, wet, snow and ice, the data shows clear trends in braking, handling, aquaplaning, wear, and efficiency.

Across virtually every safety-critical metric, Goodyear dominates: it wins all seven wet braking trials (often by double-digit percentages), leads handling on wet and snow, and consistently stops shorter on dry. The Maxxis counters with occasional aquaplaning resilience and marginally lower fuel use or rolling resistance in select tests, but struggles to convert those into overall safety and control, particularly in the wet.

Test Results

Independent comparison tire tests are the best source of data to get tire information from, and the good news is there have been seven tests which compare both tires directly!

Summary of seven total tests comparing both tires directly

seven wins

While it might look like the Goodyear UltraGrip Performance 3 is better than the Maxxis Premitra Snow WP6 purely based on the higher number of test wins, tires are very complicated objects which means where one tire is better than the other can be more important in real world use.

Let's look at how the two tires compare across multiple tire test categories.

Key Strengths

  • Outstanding wet braking (wins 7/7; e.g., 32.6 m vs 41 m, +20%)
  • Confident wet and snow handling with high lateral grip (e.g., snow circle 3.88 m/s²)
  • Shorter dry braking and stable, neutral dynamics
  • Excellent wear and low abrasion (e.g., +22-43% projected mileage)
  • Good straight/curved aquaplaning in some sizes
  • Acceptable snow braking/traction for the class
  • Occasionally lower fuel use/rolling resistance
  • Lower purchase price / decent value score in some tests

Dry Braking

Looking at data from four tire tests, the Goodyear UltraGrip Performance 3 was better during four dry braking tests. On average the Goodyear UltraGrip Performance 3 stopped the vehicle in 5.94% less distance than the Maxxis Premitra Snow WP6.

So far, amazing tire. One of the best ever made. It grips and it handles so much better than the eagle f1 asymmetric6, the previously fitted on this car, and the wintercontact ts 850 p on another. And the comfort, its like the car is floating. Not cheap though.

Given 49% /45 R17 on a combination of roads for 5,000 average miles
I am not driving that spirited, especially on winter tires - thus take my grip specifics with a grain of salt. In the grip category i don't see reason to complain. Sometimes i am in the mood to take an on-ramp near the limit of grip - behaviour here seems normal to me, the car tends to understeer. The previous winter tires i bought the car with were 8 year old Marangoni Meteo HP and those sometimes tended to oversteer and had quite bad wet grip, so i replaced them with these. After one winter season the front tires are severely more worn than the rears, i dont expect more than two seasons,... Continue reading this review using the link below

Conclusion

The UltraGrip Performance 3 delivers the complete winter package: class-leading wet braking and grip, predictable handling on all surfaces, and superior longevity and abrasion results. It won every shared test overall (including multiple ADAC victories), with wet braking advantages commonly in the 10-20% range and wear life benefits of roughly 20-40% depending on size. If you prioritize safety, confidence in mixed winter weather, and long-term value through durability, Goodyear is the clear choice.

The Premitra Snow WP6 offers palatable pricing and, in isolated categories, decent aquaplaning resistance and efficiency. However, its extended wet and dry braking distances, lower grip, and reduced stability-as highlighted by professional testers-limit its recommendation, especially for safety-conscious buyers. Unless budget is the overriding concern and conditions are predominantly light winter with a focus on straight-line aquaplaning reserves, the Maxxis is hard to justify over the Goodyear.
Key Differences
  • Wet braking gap is decisive and recurring (often 10-20% shorter stops for Goodyear)
  • Goodyear offers superior wet and snow handling precision; Maxxis exhibits weaker grip and stability
  • Dry braking consistently shorter with Goodyear (≈5-6% in multiple tests)
  • Longevity: Goodyear projects notably higher mileage (+20-40%) and lower abrasion
  • Aquaplaning: Maxxis edges straight/curved aquaplaning in select cases, but Goodyear is generally competitive
  • Efficiency/value: Maxxis can be cheaper and occasionally uses slightly less fuel; Goodyear trades a higher price for markedly higher safety and durability

Footnote

This page has been developed using tire industry testing best practices. This means we are only comparing tests which have had both tires in the same test.

Why is this important? Tire testing is heavily affected by things like surface grip levels and surface temperature, which means you can only compare values from the same day. During a tire test external condition changes are calculated into the overall results, but it is not possible to calculate this between tire tests performed on different days or at different locations.

As a result you will see other tests on Tire Reviews which feature both the %s and %s, but as they weren't conducted on the same day, the results are not comparable.

Lots of other websites do this sort of tire comparison, Tire Reviews doesn't.
