Michelin Alpin 6 vs Vredestein Wintrac Pro

This head-to-head pits two very different winter philosophies against each other: the Michelin Alpin 6, a premium-touring winter tire engineered for consistency, longevity and safety margins, versus the Vredestein Wintrac Pro, an ultra-high-performance winter option targeting sharper handling and stronger driver engagement. Across 14 shared tests, the Alpin 6 amassed 11 overall wins to the Wintrac Pro's 2, signaling a clear trend in all-weather versatility and efficiency.

Yet the story isn't one-sided. The Wintrac Pro frequently challenges or beats the Michelin in dry dynamics and subjective feel, often runs quieter, and is consistently cheaper. Meanwhile, Michelin typically leads in wet braking and aquaplaning resistance, snow traction/handling stability, rolling resistance, and-crucially-wear and value retention. Buyers are essentially choosing between sportier feel and lower purchase price (Vredestein) and all-round safety, economy, and lifespan (Michelin).

While it might look like the Michelin Alpin 6 is better than the Vredestein Wintrac Pro purely based on the higher number of test wins, tires are very complicated objects which means where one tire is better than the other can be more important in real world use.

Let's look at how the two tires compare across multiple tire test categories.

Key Strengths

  • Outstanding wet braking and aquaplaning resistance (often 5-8% gains in wet stop/aqua tests)
  • Very high mileage and low wear (20-35% advantage in multiple tests)
  • Balanced, confidence-inspiring snow traction/handling
  • Lower rolling resistance and strong efficiency/value scores
  • Sportier dry dynamics and frequent wins in dry handling/braking
  • Lower purchase price and typically quieter pass-by noise
  • Good subjective feel in the dry and sometimes the wet
  • Occasionally strong snow braking performance

Dry Braking

Looking at data from eight tire tests, the Vredestein Wintrac Pro was better during four dry braking tests. On average the Vredestein Wintrac Pro stopped the vehicle in 0.07% less distance than the Michelin Alpin 6.

I've had until now kleber krisalp hp2, Avon Ice touring, Pirelli Cinturato. The Alpin 6 have a good grip on wet and dry, they are silent to. I'm waiting the snow to test it. 1st impresion, verry good.

Best Review for the Vredestein Wintrac Pro
Given 78% 255/35 R19 on mostly country roads for 5,000 spirited miles
Purchased in sizes 225/40 r19y front and 255/35 r19y rear for Jaguar xe awd. Excellent on dry and wet, very good on fresh snow, on ice I don't know. They are silent and with a soft compound. They may not excel in one category, but they are very homogeneous and suitable for all weather conditions. Very stable at high speeds. Honestly I would buy them again.

Conclusion

Patterns across multiple tests are clear: Michelin's Alpin 6 delivers the more rounded winter package, especially in safety-critical metrics. It reliably stops shorter in the wet, resists aquaplaning better, offers stronger snow traction and balanced snow handling, and outlasts rivals with markedly lower wear-translating to better long-term value despite a higher upfront price. Its rolling resistance is usually lower too, aiding fuel economy. Where it can lag is sporty precision on dry roads and cabin quietness.

The Vredestein Wintrac Pro appeals to drivers who want a winter tire that still feels alert and composed on dry roads, often with shorter dry stops, good wet subjective feel in some tests, and notably lower noise and price. But it shows more variability in wet objective grip and aquaplaning, mixed snow performance, and higher rolling resistance and wear in key studies. For snow-reliant regions or safety-first commuting, pick the Alpin 6. For milder winters with mostly cold/damp roads and a tighter budget, the Wintrac Pro remains a compelling, sporty-leaning choice.
Key Differences
  • Overall wins heavily favor Michelin (11 vs 2), indicating broader consistency
  • Wet safety edge: Alpin 6 repeatedly stops shorter and resists aquaplaning better
  • Snow balance: Michelin leads traction/handling; Vredestein occasionally edges snow braking
  • Dry dynamics: Wintrac Pro more agile and engaging; Michelin can understeer and feel less sporty
  • Longevity/economy: Michelin shows much lower wear and rolling resistance; Vredestein tends to wear faster
  • NVH and price: Vredestein is usually quieter and notably cheaper to buy

Footnote

This page has been developed using tire industry testing best practices. This means we are only comparing tests which have had both tires in the same test.

Why is this important? Tire testing is heavily affected by things like surface grip levels and surface temperature, which means you can only compare values from the same day. During a tire test external condition changes are calculated into the overall results, but it is not possible to calculate this between tire tests performed on different days or at different locations.

As a result you will see other tests on Tire Reviews which feature both the %s and %s, but as they weren't conducted on the same day, the results are not comparable.

Lots of other websites do this sort of tire comparison, Tire Reviews doesn't.
