Nokian Outpost nAT vs Hakkapeliitta R5 vs WRG4 vs One - 2nd of 4 tires

  • Overall - Admittedly the WRG4 couldn't match the winter tire in the snow, but it's not a winter tire, it's an all weather tire so should be better in the dry and wet, but the grip is offered was predictable and safe.

Top 3 Nokian WR G4 SUV Reviews

Given 99% while driving a Chevrolet silverado 1500 (275/55 R20) on mostly motorways for 45 spirited miles
One my third set - drive 1500 Silverado's - mostly highway driving, some-offroad, some light trailer towing - long distance. Excellent tire. Last set lasted 45,000 mile - but the centerpede tread wore away outer treads are fine - look new. Trying to locate another set, but they are out of stock everywhere. Too bad for me.

Given 72% while driving a Subaru Forester 2.0 XT (/45 R17) on a combination of roads for 33 average miles
I love these tires in the snow, which was my top priority. However, I am being told that they need to be replaced ---and it's only been 33K mi! Tread is worn nearly to the bar on two of them. I have had the tires rotated on every other oil change as directed by Subaru (2014 Forester XT) ...so, not sure what's up with that. Would definitely buy again IF they lasted longer, but at such low mileage, it doesn't seem worth it. UGH

Given 49% while driving a Honda Odyssey (/45 R17) on a combination of roads for 0 easy going miles
Installed these tires on a 2015 Honda Odyssey. Tires were great in the snow when new, but after 3 months they started making noise and I rotate the tires every 5,000 miles. After one year or following winter, tire wear was more than expected to the point that the snowflake on the tread is almost gone. They are at 7/32nds and new they come with 11/32nds! Could not get up an untreated hill with less than one inch of snow. I am going to have to replace these tires before next winter and this means that they did not last two years.

Given 40% while driving a Toyota RAV4 (225/65 R17) on mostly motorways for 25,000 easy going miles
I wore out a set of these tires in 40,000kms (25,000miles). I had my tires rotated every 7000kms when my vehicle was in for scheduled maintenance intervals. They are by far the worst tires I have used. My wife expressed to me on several occasions how she feels unsafe with them. They do not instill confidence to the driver and make you pucker up for every wet bend or snowy turn. I will not be buying these or any other nokian product again.

Given 79% while driving a Toyota RAV4 (225/45 R18) on a combination of roads for 35 average miles
I live in the Cascade Mountains on a steep road, loads of snow in the winter. Really an excellent tire but disagree with some of the other comments on road noise and standing water/puddle performance. This could well be differences in vehicles or models though. They are really excellent in all types of snow except near slush that is sticky, "Alabama Red Clay" type cold slush, but most tires I'm aware of cannot be designed to shed it from the treads when it's like that. It essentially turns into a bald-like tire at some point in that stuff. Standing water and puddles in heavy rain - there is an aquaplaning tendancy at or near freeway speeds that can get your attention. There is more road noise I believe than my previous tires, but not a whole lot, and I do have a bit stiffer suspention being the Sport model Rav4 with the 6 cylinder and that sometimes has more to do with the road noise than the tires do. Traction in all kinds of other snow (other than slush) and even ice is really supurb and I'm real confidant driving them. The tire wear is excellent too, and I drive 100 miles a day round trip from snow country to the flat lands to work. They handled fantastic when on the interstate going over the pass, with compact snow on the road when a car drifted in front of me and I had to swerve around him aggressively. The tires to my surprise stayed pretty much tracked to the road with some release, but regripped almost instantly. I would recommend them for sure. I'm tempted to try the new 2023 Michelin CrossClimate2 Tire however after reading a few reports on them. They're supposed to be better at not aquaplaning but debate if should be leaving a known performer.

What to know the BEST All Season Tires for 2024? Click to find out!
Given 97% while driving a Subaru Outback (225/65 R17) on a combination of roads for 5,000 average miles
We bought the WR G4 tires to replace the Outback's OEM tires (Bridgestone Dueler H/P Sport AS--avoid at all costs or replace immediately!). What we were looking for: tires that gripped well in the wet, predictable snow and ice handling, quiet and comfortable ride, and moderate to good tread life (at least 40k miles). At 5000 miles, the WR G4's have delivered that and more! Even in torrential rain, whether it's above or below freezing, traction is almost as excellent as in the dry. It's an "all-weather" tire so I expected it to sacrifice some snow and ice capability for warm weather durability. However, I find that its feezing temperature, snow, slush, and ice capabilities are better than all except premium winter tires. We really had to try to get it to lose grip in snow (6" unplowed was max tried), slush, and ice; each time, grip kicked in hard again after maybe a couple wheel spins. The tires handled evasive lane changes (yay for sketchy winter drivers) with full grip and no surprises. The tires are (still) insanely quiet, buffer a lot of road vibration and mute potholes, yet the gas mileage is the best we've ever had on this car. Not sure how Nokian managed this combination. I was a little skeptical on tread life before buying the tires (winter capability and 60k warranty in the same tire?), but they have delivered so far. The treads still look new at 5000k; contact surface is barely worn and all sidewall and tread features, including all those sipes, are intact. Caveats and more to follow... We have not driven the tires in sustained temperatures above mid 80s F, so we can't comment much on hot weather performance and durability/wear yet. Because these are SUV tires on a crossover/SUV, we did not expect the same snappy response and direct feedback of a sedan/coupe tire. That said, the handling, braking, and feedback are the best we've had on an Outback in 15 years. Who these tires are for: SUV/crossover owners who prioritize tires that excel during inclement weather across all seasons, who will sacrifice top end winter capability in exchange for no seasonal tire changes, and who seek quiet and durable tires for (often potholed) city roads and highways.
