Hankook iON Evo AS

In comparison with the OEM Hankook Ventus S1 evo 3 tires, these iON tires do not handle either dry or wet weather as well. This is not surprising as the embossed tire wear indicator of the iON tires is 600 (hard tire compound) in comparison to the Ventus of 340 (relatively softer tire compound) and the Ventus traction rating is AA versus the iON of just A. In urban driving the difference is minimal but in country driving (at 100Kph -60mph) on Australia's relatively poor roads, the difference is noticeable - not unsafe but the Ventus provides more confidence.

Of course, tire wear is far lower with the iON tires. However, the price difference between the Ventus and iON tires was minimal (and both cost over $400 (AUD) per tire in 2024) when I replaced the OEM (Ventus) tires after 53,000Km on my 2021 Tesla Model 3 LR..

This leaves an interesting dilemma, do I buy hard wearing iON tires or better handling Ventus tires for the next replacement...or maybe Michelin (whose EV tires were not available in Australia at replacement time 2 years ago).

I have the Hankook iON EVO AS 235/45/18 tires on my 2022 Tesla Model 3 Performance with 18x8.5 T Sportline TS5 wheels.

The tires are XL tires with 600 Treadwear rating, A Traction rating, A Temperature rating, and W speed rating. They also have a 50k mile warranty. Finally, they weigh about 23.4 lbs according to my bathroom scale.

The efficiency is just incredible with them. I have done controlled efficiency testing around a 25 mile loop with the same weather conditions, battery temp, and battery SOC. The Hankook iON EVO AS tires were 18% more efficient than the original 235/35/20 Pirelli PZ4 tires that came on the car.

They were also 10% more efficient than the 235/45/18 Michelin PS4S tires I had on the same wheels. However, those tires had about 7,000 miles of wear on them. These Hankook tires were brand new with 10mm of tread depth.

I averaged 207 wh/mi over a 223 mile trip at a 61 mph GPS measured average speed with these Hankook tires in a Model 3 Performance. That would give me about 381 miles of real world range.

I definitely want to see Tirereviews test these tires especially for efficiency. The range increase I am getting is just unbelievable with these tires. They are less than $200 per tire at Walmart here in the states. That is actually a reasonable price.
