Goodyear UltraGrip Performance 3 vs Semperit Speed Grip 5

This head-to-head pits Goodyear's ultra-high-performance UltraGrip Performance 3 against Semperit's high-performance Speed-Grip 5 across eight shared professional tests from 2023-2025. Both target European winter use on passenger cars, but they take different routes: Goodyear leans into wet-road security and longevity, while Semperit aims to balance performance with efficiency and price.
Across the dataset, Goodyear consistently finishes higher overall (including ADAC wins in 2024 and 2025) and establishes a clear edge in safety-critical wet and snow metrics. Semperit counters with lower rolling resistance and sharper dry handling feel in several tests, plus a stronger value proposition in certain sizes. The result is a classic premium-versus-value choice shaped by climate and priorities.

Test Results

Independent comparison tire tests are the best source of data to get tire information from, and the good news is there have been eight tests which compare both tires directly!

Summary of eight total tests comparing both tires directly

While it might look like the Goodyear UltraGrip Performance 3 is better than the Semperit Speed Grip 5 purely based on the higher number of test wins, tires are very complicated objects which means where one tire is better than the other can be more important in real world use.

Let's look at how the two tires compare across multiple tire test categories.

Key Strengths

  • Outstanding wet safety: shorter wet braking (e.g., 31.7 m vs 33.3 m ADAC 2025) and superior wet handling/circle
  • Consistently strong winter performance with better snow/ice balance and aquaplaning resistance
  • Excellent longevity and low abrasion (e.g., 76,500 km vs 47,900 km ADAC 2025)
  • Lower noise and higher comfort with stable all-round manners
  • Agile feel on dry handling in several tests (e.g., +0.87% speed in AB 2025)
  • Lower rolling resistance in multiple results, aiding fuel efficiency
  • Competitive pricing/value in some sizes (e.g., better Price/1000 in AB 2023/2024)
  • Solid mileage for its class and balanced everyday behavior in mild winters

Dry Braking

Looking at data from five tire tests, the Goodyear UltraGrip Performance 3 was better during four dry braking tests. On average the Goodyear UltraGrip Performance 3 stopped the vehicle in 2.93% less distance than the Semperit Speed Grip 5.

So far, amazing tire. One of the best ever made. It grips and it handles so much better than the eagle f1 asymmetric6, the previously fitted on this car, and the wintercontact ts 850 p on another. And the comfort, its like the car is floating. Not cheap though.

I had used ug8 before this tire and semperit is better than goodyear. I have been using all type of condition on winter and warm weathers, handling is always very good. Price of tire is very good. I strongly recommend this tire for everyone.

Conclusion

The Goodyear UltraGrip Performance 3 is the more rounded and safety-focused winter tire. It dominates wet braking and handling (wins in 6/8 wet braking and 3/3 wet handling matchups), shows dependable snow capability, runs quieter, and delivers noticeably higher projected mileage (up to +60% in ADAC 2025). If you drive through frequent rain, mixed winter conditions, or value long-term durability, Goodyear is the safer, longer-lasting bet-even at a higher upfront cost.
The Semperit Speed-Grip 5 appeals to budget-minded drivers in milder winters. It often feels a touch more agile on dry roads, posts lower rolling resistance in multiple tests, and can undercut Goodyear on price. However, its weaker wet grip and less stable winter handling limit its suitability for harsher or consistently wet climates. In short: choose Goodyear for maximum all-weather security and longevity; choose Semperit if efficiency, price, and mainly dry/cleared-road use define your winter.
Key Differences
  • Overall results: Goodyear leads across shared tests (7 test wins vs 1) including ADAC 2024 and 2025 victories
  • Wet braking: Goodyear repeatedly shorter (e.g., 32.6 m vs 34.9 m; 31.7 m vs 33.3 m)
  • Wet handling/aquaplaning: Goodyear stronger in handling, circle, and curved aqua; Semperit occasionally matches straight-line aqua
  • Snow capability: Goodyear generally better in traction/handling; Semperit occasionally equals or edges single braking metrics
  • Dry dynamics: Semperit marginally quicker in dry handling laps; Goodyear often stops shorter in dry braking
  • Efficiency and cost: Semperit lower rolling resistance and better value scores in some tests; Goodyear significantly longer wear life and lower noise

Footnote

This page has been developed using tire industry testing best practices. This means we are only comparing tests which have had both tires in the same test.

Why is this important? Tire testing is heavily affected by things like surface grip levels and surface temperature, which means you can only compare values from the same day. During a tire test external condition changes are calculated into the overall results, but it is not possible to calculate this between tire tests performed on different days or at different locations.

As a result you will see other tests on Tire Reviews which feature both the %s and %s, but as they weren't conducted on the same day, the results are not comparable.

Lots of other websites do this sort of tire comparison, Tire Reviews doesn't.
